Extreme Prequel Plot Holes And Inconsistencies

Author

I’ll start. Obi-Wan doesn’t remember owning R2 in the OT yet owns him in the prequels.

Obiwan never owns R2 in the prequels actually. But it is odd he would say that in anh. Unless you want to head canon it and say he knew it was anakins and was just lying about it, seeing as he lied about anakin in his hut later too.

Inb4 “george lucas and his enablers didn’t care and suck,” it’s kind of fun to see what justifications and retcons Lucasfilm come up with to explain inconsistencies or bad writing.

The new canon novel “A New Hope: The Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy” does retcon the OP inconsistency by having Obi Wan interact with R2 on the Falcon while Luke is busy practicing his saber stuff and everyone else is obviously preoccupied. R2 comes up next to him with familiarity, and Obi Wan pets him, saying something to the effect of, “It’s good to fly with you again, my old friend.”

So, he’s being his cheeky “point of view” self when he said he didn’t “own” R2, just meaning that he didn’t consider him property, but a friend.

The Leia comic kind of explains Leia remembering her mother; she sees a portrait of Padme on Naboo, and through the force or whatever she feels a connection to it, and the painting actually appears to move and look directly at her with sad eyes. It’s actually really lame, but like I said, the lengths the story group goes for this kind of thing is funny.

These kinds of retcons suck and are lame. They are obviously not at all what anyone had in mind when the earlier stories were made, and frankly they insult the intelligence of the viewer by expecting us to believe they actually make any kind of sense.

It is far preferable to simply dismiss the contradictory elements rather than trying pretend they fit together as part of some grand plan. The mental gymnastics required to twist them around into such illogical shapes ends up being too tiring and frustrating to keep track of, so at this point I don’t bother even paying attention to a word of any so-called ‘official’ continuity explanations.

Obi-Wan tells Luke “your father wanted you to have [the lightsaber] when you were old enough.” He also mentions Owen being afraid Luke would follow Obi-Wan on some “idealistic crusade” like Anakin.

This one bugs me because you can’t really justify it as Obi-Wan simply lying about Luke’s father. Why even bring it up? All he needed to say is “by the way, I have your father’s lightsaber, if you want it.” Why even mention anything about the “idealistic crusade” or Anakin wanting Luke to have the lightsaber? AotC shows us Owen and Anakin interacting for maybe a day. Prequel Owen clearly wouldn’t have any reason to care that Anakin left to go save Obi-Wan from the termites. Everything in the original scene points to a backstory where Owen and Anakin grew up together, and Owen was upset when Anakin left with Obi-Wan to go fight in the war.

That isn’t a PT plot hole, it is an OT one. Unless you just chalk it up to him lying.

How is that an OT plot hole?

When do you believe Anakin Skywalker told Obi Wan “please give this to my son when he is old enough”? Was it before or after he was hidden from his father at birth, per Obi Wan in ROTJ?

ROTJ only suggested that it was a potential plot hole, since it’s entirely possible that Anakin discussed his plans for the future with Obi-wan, even if he didn’t know for sure that he would have a son. The prequels confirmed it as a plot hole by not having this conversation, so it’s partly the fault of ROTJ, partly the fault of ROTS.

I never had a problem with this from either the PT or OT perspective. Obi-wan holds his cards close to his chest and has no problem leaving out vital details of Luke’s relation to Darth Vader, so it’s totally in character for him to conceal recognition of R2 and C-3PO. He doesn’t lie, after all; he only says he doesn’t remember owning any droids, not “I’ve never seen that droid in my life.”

Where do you even begin. The real question is where can you find any actual plot congruity.

It would have been so easy to have Owen in TPM as one of those kids or an older brother sort and have him want Anakin to stay and not go off because Owen never looked beyond owning a farm on Tatooine. Maybe Anakin gave Owen some of his winnings to make the down payment. The he could still be “Uncle” like I’m Uncle to my friends little one.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

What if Lucasfilm decides to do the Ben Kenobi film, and in the film he meets up with Vader, which is how he now knows “He is more machine now, than man…twisted and evil.” How did he know what he looked like or what he was made of? Was it his presence? Did he hear rumors of Vader and assumed it was Anakin?

He has to meet him in the new film, and he has to mention to Vader that he has his lightsaber, which Vader could say, “I want my son to have it.” that could fix one continuity error. But, then there’s another error. Vader says, “When I left you, I was but a learner, now I am the master.” so I guess that wouldn’t work would it.

Well if you watch it in machete order you assume that he grew up on the moisture farm with his step sibling’s and his stepfather until Qui-Gon finds him and brings him to the order.

Although you have to skip Watto’s conversation with Anakin to make this work, but hey what do I look like a miracle worker? LOL JK

How does that even work? “I’m off to be evil now, Ben. Here is that lightsaber I always wanted to give my son I don’t know that I have. I won’t need it now, I’m building a red one!”

The plot hole is that Vader was not Luke’s father initially. He had no job after ANH per Lucas in Splinter. Anakin and Vader were different people. To fix this, they just made Obi-Wan a liar. It works really well if you see Obi Wan as a liar trying to get Luke to take the heroes journey.

I don’t think it was a consistency-breaking plot hole, simply because I can easily imagine that during the events of ROTJ Anakin would have a conversation about what he hoped for in the future, perhaps after he has failed to become a master and Padme tries to cheer him up:

Padme: "Master or not, I’m sure a member of the Jedi council could tell me."
Anakin: "Tell you what?"
Padme: "Whether it’s a boy or a girl."
Anakin (moving closer and closing his eyes) "It’s a boy."
Padme: (jokingly) "Are you sure? Because I have the strangest feeling that it’s a girl."
Anakin: (earnestly) "No, it’s a boy, and when he’s old enough, he’ll…"
Padme: (sarcastically) "Let me guess. He’ll be a powerful Jedi like his father, and inherit your sword like the great warriors of legend."
Anakin: (sheepishly) "Something like that."
Padme: "So are you saying a girl can’t be a Jedi?"
Anakin: “You know that’s not what I meant.” (senses movement in the other room) "Obi-wan! What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be on Utapau?."
Obi-wan: “I forgot something. Didn’t want to interrupt.”

Unfortunately none of this happened, so the plot hole is created.

That’s better dialog than George wrote. 😉

It’s actually pretty good.

And now I’m wondering why Anakin couldn’t sense Padme was carrying twins in the first place.

Maybe before his turn to the dark side, Anakin mentioned to Obi-Wan that he and his wife were trying to have children, and he said “You know, I’d like my son to have my lightsaber when he’s old enough.” Again, since we’re ignoring the prequels, the backstory implied in the OT could have Jedis that don’t forbid romantic love. There’s nothing in the original trilogy that says Anakin never knew he had children until after they were born, just that he didn’t know he had a daughter.

The characters we got don’t seem to like each other enough to have such a chat unfortunately.
