Another Hobbit fanedit (Peter Jackson Edition) (* unfinished project *)

So for my next fanedit, I went into this thinking, what if Peter Jackson was more focused & had enough time to think on making The Hobbit films. My plan is to create two 2-3 hour movies from the whole Hobbit Trilogy. This is what Peter Jackson was originally planning ending the first film with them meeting bard. While the concept sounds very similar to The arkenstone & JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit fanedits, I have two very distinct plans. I’m keeping part of the Legolas subplot & all of Radaghast subplot in (but removing all the silly/ridiculous elements of them) as fan service for LOTR fans. I’m also making a 3D cut of the films, seeing as that was a pivotal part of the film making process. I plan on color correcting them to remove green tints and make them more intune with LOTR. The 2D edit will have some grain on it as well (with possible digital dust specs as well). I also am going to have a DTS 5.1 mix with both films. I have my first cut of the first movie done, and am curently syncing hd footage with color correction to them. The first film should be out in around two months time. One thing I do need help with is uploading to myspleen so I can get my killing joke edit on there and eventually get this one on there as well… I cannot wait to share this with all my “fellow” LOTR and Hobbit fans! 😀

Sounds intriguing…

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

Hello, quick update. So I’m on my second draft of the first movie and currently finishing up my first draft of the second one. Audio is a bit of a pain in the second one, but given a couple of weeks, it will sound better. I plan on doing a test screening in the coming months were I can get feedback from personal friends, and then, I will release my third and final draft to the fan edit community (in 2D). To keep you guys content for a couple weeks, here is my latest (and best) version of how the new color correction will look! I’m so excited 😃 !!!

Ok, so I got some good news and bad news… Good news is that everything is going according to schedule and I am almost done fixing audio issues and visual issues for my test screening! I also figured out a way to make the films match the LOTR films that I’m pretty sure no one else mentioned, but giving it that film look by not only adding grain, but blurring the picture a tinge. Bad news, I’m pretty sure that the release of this edit will be delayed as I found the color grading featurette on Fellowship’s extended edition, and I really want to match what they did (not fully, but partially). What I have in mind will take some time to finish, so I’m not sure if it will release near the end of spring or the end of summer, but I will know as soon as I do more tests. But I can release what I have once I feel confident enough for it to stand on its own. Hope you all have a pleasant day!

Sounds interesting. Loved the LOTR trilogy (after having read the books all my life) but found I couldn’t bring myself to really even like The Hobbit trilogy. I wanted to like it but they threw so much filler in there along with overly extended and over the top action sequences (along with a lot of silly and unnecessary stuff as well) to be able to fill it out for 3 movies that I ended up quite disliking it and despising PJ for being a sellout in trying to milk the LOTR movies success and popularity.

The Hobbit should have been one long movie or two medium length movies at the most. And it should have been able to exist and succeed on its own rather than riding on the coat tails of LOTR and been purposefully tied into the LOTR in to many overly obvious ways that weren’t needed. Watching The Hobbit movies just felt like I was watching a crappier version of LOTR rather than a completely separate story that simply exists in the same world with some of the same characters and a very vague / obscure link to the events in LOTR via the one ring.

Anyway, keen to see what you do here 😃

I think you should rename this. Technically the movies are already “Peter Jackson Editions” so you should expand your idea in the title the way you did in your first post.

I do plan on not having Peter Jackson as the main title. However, I do not agree that the versions of The Hobbit we got were Peter Jackson’s versions (even the extended cuts). I feel they are WB’s and New Line’s version. It is all due to this feature on the bonus features that made me feel lots of sympathy for Peter, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20vA9U7J2qQ , At least, that’s my two cents on it.

Hmm…I see maybe it was not all PJs fault in the end. Shame he didnt have the time to do it properly like LOTR and shame WB and the production companies felt they had to milk it for all it was worth (in creating 3 marathon movies from 1 normal sized book).

Just had a quick look at your screen comparisons and I don’t know if it’s just my untrained eye for editing but the first lot look like they are quite a bit darker and the second lot of comparisons look like you’re adding A LOT of grain. How does it appear when actually viewing the film?

I’ve still been tinkering with the video correction and it’s going to be better. The one in the screenshot comparison is artificial grain, but I’m planning on looping some natural grain I aquired a while ago, it just will take some time to do that. I’m currently focused on finishing my school year and getting the main editing done for both features.

Just came across this randomly in my YouTube travels and found it quite good. Bit like the RedLetterMedia analysis on the prequels but without being feature length by themselves 😉

Thought it might be an interesting listen for yourself OP while on the matter of trying to fix The Hobbit movies with your edit. Below is part 1 of 5:

I did some messing around over the weekend and I thought to myself, everyone who talks about how overusing the cgi in The Hobbit makes it look like a cartoon. So why not make The Hobbit segments into a cartoon? If all works well, I imagine I will be releasing 4 versions of the movie (The one I have been working on (2D, 3D) and the cartoon version (2D, 3D)). So far the results have been pretty great with the cartoon style being similar to that seen at the beginning with the red book. It blends the cgi elements well enough that everything looks like it shares the same space. Just something for now…

So after a long time messing around I finally have a comparison for you guys,

https://youtu.be/b0g2n0pNLV4

So for the LOTR color all I did was lower the contrast, saturation, increased the brightness, and removed the green blanket covering through the whole film

For the animated version, I layered three animation filters, an old parchment filter, and more messing with the brightness

What I am interested in hearing from you guys is, should I leave the original colors in for the animated version, remove just the green blanket, or have the exact same color correction from the live action version in the animated version?

The green removal looks good to me, but I don’t know what the original color looked like so I can’t make a good comment on that. The animation effect looks decent when applied to contrasted textures and edges such as Gandalf’s staff, but it is extremely distracting in low contrast areas. Since Jackson uses such a dynamic camera, the static parchment layer feels very much tacked on. I’d be interested to see this with just the animation effect applied to edges.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I’ll see what i can do about the edges, i was planing on making a separate video where the parchment changes for every frame and detailed lines are a little more faded. (The parchment layer is more of a style choice that hones more to Alan Lee’s and John Howe’s style, and to cover up the animation so it looks less like artifacts)

Just wondering how this edit was coming along? Pretty interested to check this out.

Also, I came across another fanedit of the first Hobbit movie by Kerr (who made my favourite fanedit of Revenge of the Sith called “Dark Force Rising”), I haven’t watch it yet myself but looks like it did pretty well going off the reviews and getting a fanedit of the month award:

https://ifdb.fanedit.org/the-hobbit-an-unexpected-journey-arkenstone-edition/

The only thing is he is keeping it as a trilogy where I’d much prefer to see it compressed to two medium to longish length movies as you are doing. Thought I’d post the link here anyway in case you havent seen it and may help with your edit.

.Val

Edit: Hmm, turns out to be quite a few Hobbit fanedits out there, with this one sounding very promising.

Still interested to see how yours turns out for sure though 😉 Have you watched any other fanedits yourself Delorean?

It’s getting close, I’m thinking about releasing a v.1 around November to see the intial reaction or what needs more tinkering (but just the regular 2D version with only green removal and partial desaturation). I’m very close to being done with There and Back Again, but I’m still having trouble with the first movie’s transition between AUJ and DOS, but it is coming along slowly but surely. Senior year might make this a pain but i’ll push through. I have seen Kerr’s version which I was impressed by some of the changes and plan on crediting him in the end credits. Same with the guy from JRR Tolkein’s The Hobbit version (which I really recommend checking out). But hang on till november cause that is most likely when it will come out (if not earlier if everthing works out 😉 )

Well, been a while since I touched this thread. I have worked on the edit as much as I could, but alas, life caught up with me. I’m gonna be extremely busy this December with many a college and family visit (not to mention a premiere for a pretty low-quality movie that anyone on this site would know nothing about 😉. But come January something might come out that’s not the full version, but it is something. I’ll keep you guys posted, and thank you so much for being patient with me. I know how hard it is to wait for cool stuff like this, but that’s what I love about this community. Everyone is just so darn humble with each other it warms my heart. Hope to hear from you guys soon and give something in return ❤️

Hey there, so a quick update. The edits are finished in a very rough form, however, since corona impacted the world and I have time to kill, I bought the 4k editions of The Hobbit and plan to edit them again with a 7.1 mix in premiere and export it out to a 5.1 mix. I’ll keep you all posted
