Thank you, Dreamaster!!
I grabbed this version few days ago and I finally watched it yesterday.
I gotta say this is one of my favorite ESB experience all my life!
The color is extremely beautiful, and you really did a fantastic job at denoising work!!
I can’t wait to watch your next work!!!

Alright, so true black bars, 4.1 video encoding, non AAC Stereo, more squishing of the image, and replace the end credits… That might be enough todo items to convince me to release a fix. Maybe in a few weeks but no promises. 😃

Actually, I’m not sure it needs more squishing. I did my own encode in 2.35 and it seems alright. When watching with VLC we can also apply a 2.35 crop and see what’s what, and that seems okay to me.

Yeah, it doesn’t seem squished upon playback, it’s merely that the black bars aren’t as low as they should be. Simply crop to 1920x817 and you’re golden.

I would be more than happy to beta-test a fixed version, if you ever decide to go that route.

Bluray ISO format like the original Grindhouse would be marvellous!

Dreamaster - you mentioned in your first post that you went back to the raw source: the “Prores” files. Out of interest, were these still red-faded, or had they already been colour-corrected to some extent by Team -1?

They had the same corrections as was released in the original Grindhouse.

JawsTDS, I might take you up on your offer to beta test.

Yes, but only if the DTS-HD tracks are included. Otherwise, you’re just adding steps.

creating a blu-ray iso is going to probably require other software and much more time, so i wouldn’t ask for that.

UPDATE:

Thanks to Neverargreat’s nudging, I’ve desaturated the greens in several places. I need to render out a test video to make sure I didn’t destroy anything on Hoth, where I applied it pretty generally across most of reels 1 and 2, but… I now have the end credits fixed, and I’m now cropping out the black bars and very very slightly adjusted the aspect ratio of the film. I’ve also learned how to put ALL of Harmy’s audio tracks, and chapter breaks with the video, and the video is now being rendered out at “High” level, profile 4.1 for blu ray compliance.

It just doesn’t make sense to me to make an iso, but the mkv will be under 25gigs and you’ll be good to cook your own easily enough.

Groovy! This all sounds fabulous. Really glad to hear you’re making it Bluray compliant, as it’s nice to make a disc playable on a standalone player. I’ll have to give this “tsmuxer” program a go.

Out of interest, what is wrong with the credits? Is it related to the issue which affected Team -1’s original Grindhouse release (I read somewhere that this had corrupted video from the last shot of the Falcon and into the credits), or is it just a coincidence that something went wrong with the encoding at around the same place?

Hey – great job on this, and thank you for putting in the work to try and preserve a cleaner copy of ESB. I just have a quick question regarding your new version.

When you say “cropping out the black bars”, do you mean that the new video file will have them completely removed? Or that you’re replacing the old ones with solid black bars throughout?

The reason I ask is because if the black bars are completely removed, and the video is output at 2.35:1 (1920 x 816), the file will still not be Blu-ray compliant, and will require re-encoding to make it 1920 x 1080.

I may have misunderstood, but was hoping to clarify just in case.

"Or that you’re replacing the old ones with solid black bars throughout?"
This. 😃

"will it go to usenet?"
Not from my hands.

"I genuinely liked the green in the Falcon!"
DOH!! Really thought it was sarcasm for some reason. Believe me, it will still be there in certain scenes. Consistency just isn’t my strong suit. If this was the only known version of 35mm Empire, I’d be shipping the prores file to you for your next project!

Okay, just got this downloaded and it looks really good!

In particular, the first part of the first Echo base scene, much of Dagobah, Arrival at Cloud City, Han in Carbonite, and the Rebel Fleet all looked especially good. The final scene in particular looked phenomenal.

There is an issue which plagues the grindhouse edition, and that’s the greenish highlights. Note how the core of Luke’s saber is often green, as well as any metallic surfaces which are in bright light. The best way I found to combat this was to hue shift everything from the greens into the blues, then selectively return the unproblematic hues to their original state. If you were able to adjust only the highlights, that may be even better.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
