Nice colors. I especially like the dark green in the Falcon cockpit.

One of the hardest parts about regrading the Grindhouse is knowing when to desaturate the blues, cyans, or greens. It’s weird when looking at Harmy’s Despecialized overlayed in the corner of the shots too (my GOUT sync/color sanity check process), because even though there was a lot of frame matching in the beginning, the frames rarely lined up 100% and it was almost as though the “flavor” of the original print was coming through. That’s umm… my story anyway and I’m sticking to it. In the single pass regrade I did, you can see the interior Vader ship just BLAZING with brilliant blue hues that are almost completely gray every other source I’ve seen. I desaturated that down quite a bit for this version but not completely. It just felt like the flavor was being lost somehow.

Thank you for your work! Glad to see someone tackling the Grindhouse version.

I have an odd question. While I agree that your original screenshot is too green, do you have any more examples of the film with that grading? I would love to see that as an alternate take if only because, like it or not, it does immediately seem a bit more modern at first glance that way. Probably wouldn’t be my preferred version of the film, but definitely a unique take that I’d enjoy for curiosity if nothing else.

I finished grabbing this last night, so I haven’t gotten a chance to watch it yet, but I checked out a few scenes (the battle of Hoth, the Emperor’s hologram and Yoda stew scenes in particular). It looks like a completely different scan! I’m really impressed with the level of quality you pulled from the Grindhouse. It’s not without its issues - which is in no way meant as a criticism, it’s primarily due to the source you had to work with - but it’s very, very good. You’ve done an amazing job, Dreamaster. Well done.

I know we can mux in our own audio, but what audio tracks did you include?

Actually, it appears to me that it will not be that simple to keep an audio track in sync, since there are a couple of differences with Despecialized 2.0. Remember Harmy had to delete one frame at the reel change near the end of the movie (between Vader falling down and Luke following him to a circle hatch opening) in order to keep Hairy_Hen’s audio in sync. Also, there was an extra frame in the beginning in DE 2.0 that required a +42 ms offset.

This release may fall out of sync by 1 frame here and there but overall it’s unnoticable. The audio track used for this release was the high rez stereo option from Harmy’s Despecialized.

It appears the Video is blu-ray compliant if there aren’t any problems with the “Main” profile.

The Audio is unfortunately NOT blu-ray compliant because AAC is not within BD spec.

If it’s from Harmy’s Despecialized, a simple replacement can be done using tsmuxer. That means having both downloaded though.

One of my side projects is to find out which version of the OOT is the most complete. I think the US GOUT is missing some frames. I know A New Hope is missing one frame the end of reel 5 - not enough to notice any sync issues. I have not checked TESB or ROTJ yet. Right now I’m working on the 97 SE - trying to create a good master and account for missing frames by using 3 versions of the SE (or 4 in the case of ANH and I’m also doing TMP because I have two sources for that) and comparing them to the GOUT and BR. Then I’m going to compare some of the LD releases (including the 93 De), the US GOUT, the UK GOUT (which I suspect is the most complete version based on a few things I’ve seen so far) the SE, and the BR (probably not the DVD as it is essentially the same). I’ll make a new thread if I ever get around to finishing the comparison. But 1 frame here and there doesn’t affect the perception of syncing. Some of these films have lines that are already more out of sync than that. Yet knowing which version is the most complete to use as a master for syncing would be a nice thing.

I’m having trouble getting this on a disc. I muxed in the DTS-HD tracks from Despecialized and made an ISO, but the disc I burned it to doesn’t play and VLC crashes when I try to open the disc image. I’ll try it again in the morning, but I’m wondering if anyone else has had a problem with this or if it’s just a fluke.

EDIT: I’m watching it now off my hard drive and it really is lovely. This is definitely the only ESB I’m watching until Poita’s is out.

Like I said above this post, I wonder if it’s because he encoded it with the “Main” profile. I’ve had problems before with the “Main” profile. The most telling thing is, I believe, is that I think all blu-rays are encoded with the “High” profile.

I did an encode last night with the DTS-HD tracks as well. I set the level to 4.1 (it doesn’t call it high profile, but that’s what it is), and because for some reason it told me the frame rate was 90000 I changed the FPS to 24000/1001. I haven’t burned it yet but Media Player Classic and VLC both liked it well enough. I used Virtual CloneDrive to mount it.

I just did the same and it worked.

I downloaded and watch it today and it was fantastic. Quality work dude. My only complaints are the grain on the logos (particularly the 20th century fox logo) looks weird and the red of vader’s lightsaber at the end seems too desaturated and pink. Everything else though was extremely well done! I do wonder dreammaster, are looking into Harmy’s lpp scan of Return of the Jedi or at least, what your thoughts are on it?

I would say that’s the highest praise any of us can offer, asking for more of the same level of work 😃

That’s an interesting thought. If I thought there would be no more 35mm scans of Jedi ever coming out, I’d be all over it. But… And that’s all I can say about that.

I really like this – it makes the Grindhouse much more appealing. However, like others have stated, the letterbox bars are colored differently between scenes. However, just apply a simple crop in VLC and it’s not a problem. Great work, and thank you for putting so much time and effort into this.

What’s going on with the credits? Has Grindhouse always spazzed out at the end like that and I just haven’t ever let it play out or did something go wrong when you exported this?

You are mixing this up with the SSE. Empire mkv release had a glitch at the end. The empire iso release fixed the glitch. But this is from the raw source again, so unless the raw source also had the glitch… Man, my head is spinning.
