I’d rather have the clarity and all the film grain from the 2014 Mi4K release but color timed how it looked in cinemas in 1984. No revisionist color timing but as close in appearance to the original intention would be great.
Unless if the 2014 Mi4K, the Mi4K with bonus features, AND the UHD are the intention, then all I need is the PCM track.

Hell yeah same goes for the despised but i like it ghostbusters 2.

I enjoy GHOSTBUSTERS II. Just wish the BD of it had way more bonus features.

Couldn’t agree with you more. Hell it’s missing a lot of deleted footage

I have the 1080i version somewhere and the LD pcm soundtrack. I also have quite a slow connection! If someone could show me an easy place to upload it to, then I’d be happy to share it. I’m thinking an FTP site with resume feature (in case the connection drops), but I can try an upload site as long as it can handle the 8gb file.

If you could upload that somewhere that would be awesome. I have the audio commentary from the Region 1 DVD which i have extracted losslessly, which would presumably synce up well with the 1080i version so long as it’s an NTSC framerate. If anyone needs that I’d happily share but I’ve little experience with uploading stuff publicly.

1080i just needs to be film framerate, NTSC doesn’t exist in 1080i. Just the codecs. Can be MPEG2, AVC, VC-1, MVC, HEVC. The list goes on.

I suggest uploading to Mega.co.nz and then just share the links in PM.

The 1999 version is the closest in my mind, to how I think the film should look. I think it is nostalgia reasons more than anything. A close second is the 4K remastered blu-ray, but the vibrancy of some of the greens and reds stands out too much over the other colours, which feels a bit out of place to me.

The 1080i 1999 version would be a great addition to have combined with the Criterion track.

Ok, here’s the Criterion PCM lossless audio track in flac format:

Please PM me for the link

I’ll do the same for the 1080i file, but it’s 8gb and this 400mb file took almost 3 hours to upload, so it will be days until it’s done.

Thanks for this! Never heard the LD PCM so this is a bonus.

Use Winrar and upload it in 200MB chunks. The part1.rar etc.

Larger files upload fast since I’m a student at Cabrillo College in Aptos, CA. Usually upload to Mega.co.nz too and I share the links in PM.

Also, is there an HD version of the 1999 master for Ghostbusters II? I have a 1080i HDTV rip (which i got from rutracker) which is 25fps and uses the same master as the 2005 DVD, as do all the ther HDTVrips I’ve found over the years.

The 2005 master of Ghostbusters II IMO is not as bad as the 2005 master for the original film (even though like the first film, it’s been cropped slightly) and actually has a good colour grade (unlike the 2005 GBI) but I thought for completists sake it would be nice to have HD 1999 masters of both films. The 2014 Blu Ray is decent but a bit too dark.

Channel 4 are broadcasting this next Sunday. It’s scheduled for the afternoon, which means you expect edits for language but if there’s any interest, I’ll happily record it in order to gauge which master it was sourced from - in case they show it again but uncut.

Thanks for the heads-up. I’m from the UK so I’ll Virgin Media it from CH4 HD as well. It’s on at 2:30pm so bound to be edits. I don’t think I’ve seen an edited-for-TV GBII before. I remember when it premiered on ITV back in 1993(?) and it was unedited then, unlike GBI which had edits made to it. When I picked both films up on DVD in 2005 (the 1999 DVDs btw) it was nice to see/hear bits of the original that I’d never seen/heard before.

It’ll be interesting to see what master they use but I doubt they’ll use a pre-2005 master.

You’re welcome. If you can remember, during the 80s, did ITV use the official TV version for GB1, with the alternate dialogue such as “Wally Wick” or did they mute/snip the offending footage? C4/Film4 has held the rights to GB1 for years and they’ve always hacked it to ribbons in order to fit a pre-watershed schedule.

C4 is often a haven for older/alternate masters (Predator, Psycho, Titanic, Explorers) so let’s see what happens. 😃

I don’t remember any 80’s TV airings of either film as I was only born in 1986 but I fully remember when GBI was aired in the early 90’s that it did not replace the “Wally Wick” line or any alternate made-for-TV dialogue. Ray said “…by dickless here”. But i was only about 6 years old at the time and was yet to know what certain words meant! They didn’t edit out all of swear words but the scene with Daina being grabbed by the Zool-arms chair was completely cut. It ended as soon as Daina could see hand/claw prints through the door. I remember it vividly because I (well, my parents) taped both films and I played them constantly. Quite odd because I seem to remember both films being on fair late in the evening. Maybe not quite post-watershed but late enough to not be edited. But like I say, GBI was edited, GBII (which I taped the ITV premier of) was not. In terms of what transfer they used, I’m assuming they were largely the same ones used for the 1999 DVD’s. Those tapes are sadly long gone so I can’t check.

That’s interesting what you say about C4 using old masters which raises my hopes about this airing slightly. The 1999 master of GBII is nothing really to write home about (as much as the 1999 GBI transfer IMPO) but like the original, it’s how I remember it looking and maybe worth preserving. I would not have a clue how to rip from a Virgin Media TiVo box to an mkv though. Don’t think it’s possible through conventional methods. If i am successful in doing so, it will be 25fps as it’s a UK TV airing but still.

Also, end credits (after the Bobby Brown song) will probably be sped-up on the Ch4 broadcast which I assume is the norm these days.

It sounds like ITV edited GB1 for time. I hated that practice and they did it for years: hacking footage away to cram in more adverts and fit a particular broadcast schedule. When you watched the same film on home video or a different channel, you ended being feeling confused at the “additional” segments.

Does this help at all? 😃

On my setup, I haven’t got any copy-prohibit restrictions, so worst case scenario, I could probably send you the .TS file if you run into problems on your end.

Unfortunately so. Sped up and truncated. Film4 is the most irritating offender in this respect because they time compress films to death, even omitting entire credit sequences that are relevant to the film, whilst marketing themselves as the dedicated film channel.

Anyone doing restorations of 80s cartoon shows? because an example of a show that needs a good restoration is the real ghostbusters. it has Over blown colors and contrast dirt scratches etc. they need to be fixed. Also I don’t know if this last one is true but missing footage. Sorry for asking in here just desperate for an answer and this is ghostbusters related.

Just watching the Ch4 HD broadcast and it looks like the 2005 master is being used. Not really any use to me as I already have a 1080i HDTV 2005 rip of this. Nevermind.

Does your HDTV rip suffer from time compressed/truncated credits?

The one I got from rutracker does not. It’s literally like watching an HD version of the 2005 PAL DVD (I assume anyway, never actually owned the 2005 DVD’s of either film).

I think the current 2014/4K master of GB2 looks great as it is - lots of things look improved compared to the 2005 version.

I like the GBII 2014 Blu Ray overall as well. None of the official releases (1999/2005 DVD/2014 BD) are problematic to me. The only gripe I have with the 2005 master is the slight cropping. It’s just the first film I’m a bit more precious about. I just really want that 1080i HDTV version or a colour regarded BD version that matches the 1999 DVD.

Ghostbusters 2 on Bluray looks pretty good for the most part. It can be a bit over-contrasty sometimes, and the slime seems oddly oversaturated in the magenta range, but it’s not too bad.

The only real problem it has is that in the scenes of Vigo in the museum at the end, particularly as he is about to be reborn, earlier versions had a warm, golden glow throughout, while the Bluray seems to have abandoned this and merely has a neutral color scheme. Evidently they did not look at any existing prints of the film when deciding on the colors for this scene, which is disappointing because it looked rather better in the earlier versions.

Yes, the “network premiere” (ITV, 7:30pm Boxing Day 1987) used the TV “Wally Wick” version.

I remember seeing it again a few years later, post-watershed, and it was the uncut “dickless” version.

Thanks, I thought it was because I vaguely remembered it being listed in the Xmas 1987 TVTimes as “TV version.” Speaking of which, there it is, in the top left hand corner:

TVTimes Xmas 1987

On a related note, the Freeview EPG used to warn you if a film had been “edited for content” but that no longer appears to happen and you have to buy the Radio Times for that information.
