So, one quick shot throughout three movies? That barely registers even if you count it.

Is the PT stuff in 04 and 11 really that much more, though?

Hayden as ghost
NOOOOOO
Boba Fett voice change
Emperor change in ESB with distinct PT makeup
Weesa free!
Naboo in the celebration scene
Dug in Jabba palace
and probably more…

I’m aware of the PT changes, thanks. All the worst changes aren’t PT related stuff though.

Take the first 3 or 4 from my list, add Jedi Rocks and CGI Jabba, and you have the list of the worst changes.

You forgot Greedo shooting first

Look, for once we should all come together and agree that the SEs all suck.

We can’t do that though because impscum loves the 97.

In terms of most changes, sure. But that doesn’t make them bad films. There’s still Star Wars underneath all that CGI somewhere.

while 04 and 11 were just an excuse to insert PT crap into OT.

I’d argue the same is true for 97, albeit to a lesser extent.

What PT stuff is in the 97 edition?

I was mainly referring to Coruscant, which is debatable, and CGI Jabba, which I believe was a test for CG Jabba in TPM (I’m sure I remember seeing a quote from Lucas about it, I could be mistaken though). They’re not direct PT links but I suppose you could make a case for some of the changes only being there because of the PT. It doesn’t really matter though, PT or not most of the stand-out visual changes are garbage.

I mean I don’t mind the removal of some pretty bad matte lines/boxes and such and the SE Cloud City is kinda cool, but there’s not much else good to be found.

I don’t even think some of the more pointless changes would bother me so much if they weren’t so lazy.
Why does R2 hide behind rocks that vanish in the next shot?
Why is the outside door to Jabba’s Palace so huge but inside it’s tiny?
If you’re going to pump money into crappy distracting CGI at least make it consistent.

Incidentally, I think that TPM was the best CGI Jabba ever looked. I don’t understand how the 2004 version is so much worse than the 1999 one.

You could say the same about puppet ESB and TPM Yoda, though.

Time and money.

I think it’s lighting too. The TPM model is bathed in bright light, compared to the 04 which is very flatly lit.

I think it also has something to do with the surrounding elements and length of shot. The TPM scene is pretty short and Jabba doesn’t really interact with too many physical things (if any). But in ANH, Jabba has numerous closeups, is poorly lit, and it’s very obvious that it sticks out from its surroundings. Additionally, it was done in such a way that Han often isn’t even looking at it when he’s talking:

Hopefully for the 40th anniversary they’ll digitally alter Han’s neck so he is looking Jabba in the eye.

It’s more the colours I think. Jabba is quite strongly orange and green and in that he just looks really dark for some reason. Especially the eyes. The weird skin pock marks don’t help.

The problem was the (lack of) talent behind the people doing the graphics. Or maybe they ran out of time or money. But regardless, even in '97 Jabba looked terrible and fake.

Ok, after looking back at the start of the thread, I’m curious how '04 Jabba would look if the scene was re-graded to either the '97 or the original theatrical color timing. I still think '97 Jabba looks better overall, but it’d be interesting to see if it improves anything.

What, a man builds a giant mound of dirt in his house and you aren’t entertained?

Please don’t give them anymore ideas for digitally editing Han’s neck 😉

Some changes have been minor improvements. Some changes just make things worse. Most of the 04 changes were minor compared to the Greedo shoots first of the 97 SE. Most of the rest don’t change the story. Most are just mildly annoying. I thought redoing the Emperor was a must as I always hated the original TESB Emperor. Though I don’t like how they did it, it is an improvement. I used to care that they change Boba Fett’s voice, now I don’t. I loved having Jabba, but redone Jabba is worse in so many ways. They got so much right the first time. They just needed to redo it with a better model and instead they used a superior model in so many inferior ways. But the rock in front of R2 is the single most stupid change made for any of the versions. There are so many other fixes that wouldn’t have been noticable. I’ve never heard anyone say that R2 couldn’t hide in the alcove and yet GL found the need to “fix” it. What about the moving restraining bold or the Jawa with Orangutan arms? GL seems to like to add continuity mistakes instead of fix them. I think all versions of the SE are flawed. The flaws in TESB are very minor compared to ROTJ and insignificant compared to ANH. As a result I don’t have any favorites of the SE releases. If forced to pick one, I’d pick 2004 as the least offensive editorially and 97 for color.

They’re all terrible, but if I had to pick one I’d go with '97 since each iteration just gets worse and worse.

As someone who likes the Clive Revill Palpatine more-and-more and the Ian McDiarmid Palpatine less-and-less as time goes by, I find this opinion increasingly unfathomable.

I don’t know what’s worse about that scene change: the fat clown makeup, or the simpleton dialogue?
