Blade Runner Versions? — Page 2

At least both versions of the film are readily available so we can both be happy with the scores we do like (unlike with some films).

Er, Alien’s DC wasn’t the greatest imo. Then again, I don’t think that was a project Ridley wanted to do to begin with, and it’s kind of an impossible task to improve perfection.

What, a man builds a giant mound of dirt in his house and you aren’t entertained?

I didn’t mention Alien on purpose. I don’t think the DC’s bad but it’s definitely not better.

Wife came up with the idea of taking me to see the new Blade Runner as a gift, but she wants to see the original first. Final Cut seems to be the correct choice based on the responses in this thread, but the disc is a “very long wait.” We can rent the Director’s Cut via Comcast, should I just go with that, or is there another way to watch the Final Cut without buying it? I haven’t checked Amazon Prime yet but their streaming selection tends to be even more limited than Netflix.

This isn’t the humble brag thread.

All the major story-affecting changes that were introduced in Director’s Cut are also in Final Cut and Final Cut does not introduce any other major story-affecting changes. However, I would go for Final Cut since there are so many good extensions of scenes and visual/sound improvements/corrections.

Final Cut is just the Director’s Cut with more polish.

The DC was made from Scott’s notes without his direct involvement. So when they took out the narration, that’s all they did - they didn’t alter the editing to match the fact that there’s now no one talking in the background. The added unicorn dream was also a little haphazardly done.

For the Final Cut, Scott was directly involved, so the editing was tightened during parts where narration was removed (mostly done to match the work print), and the unicorn dream was integrated better. Then Scott decided to fix some other things, like lip sync in one scene, replacing a stunt double’s head with the actual actor in one scene, changing a couple backgrounds for continuity, and a few other little effects fixes.

So yeah, the FC is overall the best version, but it isn’t that different from the DC.

If you want to watch it sooner without waiting, I’d say go ahead and watch the DC.

Perfect, thank you. I presume we’ll go ahead and watch the DC since the clock is ticking, but I’ll let her make the call.

I’m so confused as to why the directors cut is even still out there, save for as a special feature in the box set they put out. Just seems odd that’s what’s on demand and not the final. Theatrical was on Netflix awhile back and that was neat as a curiosity, but with the final cut in existence, I don’t get the persistence of the directors cut.

The DC feels very unfinished to me. I dunno why anybody would want to watch it.
I really like the theatrical

Goddammit you guys.

Like I said, it’s just unpolished in comparison to the FC, but there’s not a dramatic difference in content.

US TC < International TC < Workprint < DC < FC

Is it “casual person who doesn’t know anything about the movie and won’t care” unpolished? Or is it “casual person who doesn’t know anything about the movie and will be distracted by it being ‘unfinished’ so might care” unpolished?

IMO, you won’t care or notice if you’ve never seen it.

I never thought the DC was deficient until I saw the Final Cut, and deficient is probably way too strong a word. Having seen the edited versions, I find the theatrical unwatchable.

You can go sit in the corner for a while and think about what you just said.

There are certainly some things that are very distracting even for naive audience. For example screenshot in the top is from DC and screenshot in the bottom is from FC. The scene takes place during the night in a heavy rain. Seeing suddenly clear blue skies was very distracting to me.

I’ve seen Blade Runner a number of times over the past decade (since I first saw it), but it’s always been the Final Cut. I’d heard the theatrical cut sucked, so I stayed away. I knew it had its fans though, and I always wanted to check it out. Last night I finally did, and it’s still a great film, really the only thing that sucks about it is the voiceover which feels very out of place. And I wanted to like the voiceover, I think it’s a nice idea for this film. But it just didn’t work.

Oddly enough though I just discovered this morning that most of the film’s deleted scenes are unused bits of voiceover that are both written and performed much better than what was used in the TC. Why didn’t anyone tell me? Now I’m going to have to see if there’s a fan edit that incorporates them (or if I need to make one myself).

The best part of the theatrical is seeing all that unused footage from The Shining. 😉

There’s a rumor the narration was done poorly on purpose because they wanted it to get cut.

Ford has vehemently denied that rumor on many, many occasions. I’m not sure if I believe him though.

Never overestimate the taste of studio executives.
