The Gazebo (1959)
A dark comedy about a Television writer, who is trying to raise money to pay off a photographer that is blackmailing him, by threatening to release nude photos of the writer’s wife.
A lot of weird quirky scenes throughout the movie. A great movie to check out.

The Other Side of the Door (2016)
A horror suspense about a mother, living in India, who is grieving over the loss of her son, in a tragic accident. She’s told of an old Indian temple, that helps link the living, with the dead, via a door (portal).
A typical horror that uses jump scares, suspense, gruesome imagery to “scare” people. The character disobeys a warning, which starts the domino effect of the “creepy scariness”. It’s not bad, worth seeing, at least once.

Wait, 1980 Flash Gordon was a family film? 😉

I saw it with mine.
I think it’s kinkier than Barbarella (1968)

Saw Beauty and the Beast (2017) last night:

Animation and production quality was outstanding. Film looked beautiful, although the interesting shots were all CGI, and nothing great from the camera work otherwise. There were even some moments when the camera panned around that everything went out of focus for an extended amount of time. We watched just a normal showing, maybe that stuff wasn’t a problem in the 3D or IMAX shows, I don’t know.

Biggest problem with this movie was the miscasting of the lead actress. Emma Watson never owned the role and I spent the first half hour pining for someone like Julie Andrews. There was no love or charm emanating from her persona, no connection between her and her father, none between her and the beast, and she was even entirely unconvincing and moribund in feigning her contempt for the boorish Gaston. The framing of the story also missed the mark, in my opinion, as there was no need to show the prince before he turned into a beast, nor any need to show the servants in the same way. Those early intrusions sapped energy from the story’s pathos, but maybe it was the same way in the original cartoon, I really don’t remember.

By far the best part of this movie was the animation and production quality, however. Unlike the CGI junk that is present in all of the newer Star Wars films (including TFA and R1), everything in Beauty and the Beast looked seamless. It was an entertaining film and better than most anything I see at the movie theater these days, but the poor casting of Emma Watson and the lack of real talented creative leadership kept it from being a really great film.

The Inceptionesque effects are a mess. In a world where Inception didn’t happen they might have been a draw but even then they are over used.

In a world where people have Mandelbulb images as their computer wallpaper it was kind of distracting. The movie overall was pretty meh, right on that bland line in the middle.

So yeah, in the animated version they use a montage of stained-glass frames to setup the story, which is very different from actually showing the principal characters in real life before their transformation. You can tell that the people who made the original understood this, as they did not open with animation of the prince; conversely, you can tell that Condon and those involved in making this movie, mysteriously, did not.

Overall, the production value of the film was eye-popping and enjoyable, but there was no charm or chemistry in any of the interpersonal relationships on screen. Emma Watson was just dreadful, and the arc of the story was missing soft transitions, which seems to be a common theme in many of the remakes and rehashes these days. The creative energy seems to be focused on paying homage to and hitting the big notes, and the effect is often a movie that brings back memories of beloved classics, but at times feels like it’s just going through the motions.

Disney was definitely banking on people who saw the original taking their kids to see this version. $170 million has got to be a record for this time of year.

Bet the owners of that drive in that refused to show the movie are kicking themselves now. 😉

There was a drive-in that refused to show it because they made a character gay. And because there was apparently some kind of a special message from him at the end (?) of the movie. They didn’t want Hollywood (paraphrasing) “forcing their views down their throats.” So, instead, they forced THEIR views down their audience’s throats by making the choice for them and not showing the film.

Word got around about LeFou’s alleged “gay moment” in the film, and the new conservative owners of that drive in freaked out sight unseen. (Russia contemplated a ban, but slapped a rating on it that will keep the impressionable tiny tots away.) The drive in pulled their facebook down, but apparently they were still going to show the latest Pirates Of The Caribbean flick, a franchise to date that’s been chock full of curses, black magic, the undead, and cross dressing buccaneers. All perfectly acceptable christian family entertainment. 😉

Nobody had a problem with Belle falling for a guy who looks like a bison on two legs, then or now.

It is.

Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast has delivered a film the size of a summer blockbuster in the month of March, debuting with not only a record-setting March opening weekend, but the seventh largest domestic opening of all-time as Disney now owns six of the top seven opening weekends of all-time. Thanks in large part to Beauty and the Beast’s opening, but also to the continued strong performances from Logan, Get Out and a decent hold from Kong: Skull Island, this weekend’s top twelve grossed a combined $249.5 million, the largest combined top twelve since December 2015 when Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theaters.

Kind of a funny story. I haven’t been to an opening weekend movie in a long time, and when g/f and I got tickets all they had left were seats in the front corner. We couldn’t see anything, so I went out and asked if we could exchange for the late showing. Ticket guy said sure, he would put us in handicap seating for that one. I told him I didn’t want to take anyone’s seat who needs to sit there, but he assured me nobody would be using them, so we exchanged the tickets.

Anyway, an hour later we go into the last showing, and the handicap area is prime real estate right in the middle of the theater, distinctly set aside from all other seats. We were embarrassed, so watched the previews from around the corner and waited to take our seats after the lights dimmed. Awkward, but worth it!

I almost never see anyone in the handicapped seats let alone a wheelchair. The theater I usually go to has some unmarked seats in the same row, and it’s a good spot if you don’t mind being a bit closer to the screen. (And you don’t have to climb over people if nature calls.) Although I sometimes worry someone in the elevated row just behind is going to put their feet up on the railing, and get shoeprints on my head. 😉

Older theaters I recall always had handicapped areas way in the back.

I’m currently trying to make my way through Sammo Hung’s “Winners and Sinners” or “Lucky Stars” series after seeing a few clips from those movies on a YouTube video. I’m up to the second installment and I’m looking forward to the third and I would recommend a watch if you can’t get past some of the dated materiel, goofiness, and reading subtitles (or listening to the dub) since the films are in Cantonese. I’m currently debating to continue past the first three films since directors change, some of the original cast doesn’t return and the rest have minor roles.

Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966)

Someone uploaded it in 4k on Youtube.

It is the entire cut of the film, including the scenes not shown on MST3K. Honestly, hard to rate this film with all of the MST3K jokes making it more passable to watch. It’s a very bad movie, mostly marred by technical deficiency, but I’ve unfortunately seen much worse.

How can it be 4K when the restoration was done in 2K? Unless this is something other?

Really need to find a good spot to hang my copy of the Master’s portrait. 😉

You missed an obvious chance to take a potshot at TFA. You’re slipping.

Battle Beyond The Stars (1980):
Considering the budget and what Corman and co. were setting out to do, I was expecting “so bad its good” results. I was pleasantly surprised to find it to be pretty serviceable, as knock off of The Magnificent Seven/Seven Samurai and Star Wars its easily one of the best out there (More watchable than Star Crash, at least). It has its own unique production design, a great James Horner score and surprisingly detailed miniatures to boot and is clearly a labour of love for those worked on it. The camp didn’t bother much at all either, if anything it’s the kind of camp that I enjoy.

A fanedit that improves upon the space scenes with updated effects and less repeated space shots would actually be pretty awesome.
