Info Wanted: 2006 GOUT Full Screen DVDs?

Hope this is the right place to ask this.
I’ve got both the Widescreen and Full Screen releases of the '04 Special Editions and the Widescreen releases of the '06 GOUT Limited Edition DVDs.
There were also Full Screen releases of the '06 Limited Edition DVDs (blue banner on the top and bottom, like the PT Full Screen DVDs), but does anybody know if these editions included the GOUT in Full Screen, or was it just the Special Edition that was Full Screen with the bonus disc remaining the same as the one from the Widescreen release?

I haven’t been able to find a definitive answer anywhere and don’t want to drop more money getting the blue banner releases of the Limited Edition DVDs if it’s just a Full Screen SE disc and standard GOUT disc, which I already have both of for all three films anyway.

I own that set. The GOUT is the same, non anamorphic widescreen with black bars on the top and bottom.

George had to make everyone angry. The people who wanted widescreen had to deal with letterboxing, and the people who wanted full screen had to deal with widescreen.

They deserve it. People who want full screen should be locked up.

Damn. Thanks though!

FS can at times have more detail than its WS counterpart in the 4:3 area, as well as a few other technical uses.
That and I find it enjoyably nostalgic from time to time.

This makes me wonder if anyone has tried superimposing a P&S tape with the GOUT to compare detail. Though, I assume since the GOUT is a Laserdisc master, it will beat any P&S source a few generations away. This exercise would be a waste of time anyway, with 35mm sources now available to us.

Yeah, you’d always loose horizontal information with full screen, even if they opened up the frame. More vertical information is neat though, until studio lights and boom mics start showing up.

Star Trek VI was a good example of this: http://imgur.com/a/94kBs

What, a man builds a giant mound of dirt in his house and you aren’t entertained?

That means you should be locked up. After all, Frink has decreed it, and anybody who has different preferences or opinions from Frink for any reason is a moron.

Not quite everyone. The GOUT is fine for displaying on a standard CRT TV. Anamorphic has no benefit in such a case.

I find it odd that they even bothered releasing the GOUT DVDs with a full screen SE disc and a Widescreen GOUT disc when they already had stand alone one disc full screen releases of the SE.
Lucas wanted more money for a change, I guess.

Can you think of any other 2.35:1 DVD releases from 2006 that were non-anamorphic? I can’t. I reckon he wanted it to have a short viable life. It doesn’t matter really since most modern players can crop and zoom a non-anamorphic disc. Anyway, had they actually transferred the films fresh for that release they may have made them even worse - at least the GOUT is a fairly accurate release of the films.

And yet they went to the trouble of replacing the '81 crawl… Perhaps that employee was fired for going above and beyond what was requested.

When you consider the crawl, that technically makes it a new version of the film. You have the 77 release and its 3 soundtracks, the 81 rerelease with the new crawl/flyover and the same soundtracks, the 85 home video release with a new soundtrack, the 1993 home video release with a new soundtrack, and the 2006 release with a restored 77 crawl/flyover. It fits with GL’s penchant for tinkering. It should have included the 77 stereo soundtrack. But we have fixed that with our fan release of the GOUT.

I have a hard time calling a release of a movie with a different sound mix a different version. At some point you’re getting a little petty. Are these Dolby and DTS mixes that we get on home releases the theatrical mixes, or do those have more tracks? (genuine question) would you consider a VHS tape a different version than the same movie on DVD because it’s mixed down to stereo? Is the Amazon Video release of TFA a different version of the film because it’s Dolby 5:1, not DTS?

No, but that doesn’t have anything to do with what I said.

It still matters if you have a display which can take advantage of anamorphic DVDs. Cropping and zooming is just a kludge. It doesn’t give you the extra resolution that anamorphic DVDs have. Of course, all DVDs have the same resolution (720 x 480 for NTSC), but anamorphic DVDs use more of the available resolution for picture content, whereas a letterboxed non-anamorphic DVD wastes more of the available resolution on black bars (letterboxing).

With a standard-resolution CRT TV it doesn’t matter, because the effective increase in resolution isn’t noticeable, and there are no display format issues either, because anamorphic and non-anamorphic DVDs display exactly the same on a 4:3 TV, assuming your DVD player is doing its job properly. Note that standard-resolution, 4:3 CRT TVs were still being sold new in mainstream stores until at least 2007.

And only people unaware of the forthcoming digital transition would buy one. It doesn’t get Lucas off the hook for offering up a technically inferior product using then 13 year old video masters and calling it a day.

It is sad CRT’s seem to be no longer manufactured. Seeing a Ms. Pac Man machine with a 16:9 LCD grafted into the cabinet just looks wrong. I saw one of those once uber expensive Sony HDTV CRT’s just put out on the curb with the trash a couple years back. Always thought those were cool, even if they weighed more than a subcompact car. 😉

Well there was no extra resolution because they were transferred in 1993 in SD. But of course, if they’d bothered to scan the three films in 2006 they could have given us anamorphic DVDs.

They had already scanned and cleaned that shot for Empire of Dreams.
