In the original two films, it looks like Vader is slowly gaining power, rather than being the right hand of “The Devil”, as you say. His character is pretty different in ROTJ, he doesn’t do any of the dirty work he used to, he just sulks around. It’s odd to me.

I really like the way Vader was written and portrayed in ROTJ. I would say he is way more complex an interesting compared to the first two films. The way he acts can be explained by two aspects. First, Emperor’s presence and power is reflected through his behaviour and it serves as the primary hint of Emperor’s power. Vader is pretty much established as the ultimate badass and seeing him behave like that establishes the power of the Emperor. Second, even more important, it is great character development. It shows that his encounter with Luke actually changed him and that he is conflicted.

It was schlocky and it was fantastic.

Star Wars is shlocky- that’s part of the charm.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

I prefer a more ruthless version of Vader. Lords of The Sith, Rogue One, and The Empire Strikes Back are when he was the man.

I liked the scene, though I worry it won’t hold up on repeat viewings.

I’ve seen it 3 times (4 if you count the time I saw it on facebook) and it’s still glorious.

Yep, saw R1 several times in the cinema and while the Vader scene was obviously the best the first time round, it was still exceptional in repeat viewings.

ROTJ really drags in the middle and each time I watch it it seems to get worse. Last night I watched Harmy’s latest DeEd (AMAZING work, probably his best yet!) for the first time and the middle has gotten so slow that I was even finding the speeder bike chase a bit mundane. I still love the speeder bikes, and some of the best shots (like when they zoom around a turn, or Luke takes one out with his saber) are still really sweet and exciting. But the chase as a whole just felt kinda ho-hum. I think the complete lack of a score for the entire sequence really hampers it in this particular case. Some rip-roaring JW chase music might help add the emotional hook the action sometimes lacks.

Thankfully the third act still saves the film for me. The space battle is still mind blowing. The duel is still a gripping tug of war between light and dark; father and son. And the ground battle is schlocky fun.

Next up is TFA. I’ve been slowly working my way through all the films (the ones I count as SW anyway). After my last viewing of R1 in the theater I’ve watched SW SSE, ESB DeEd, and now ROTJ DeEd. I’ll watch the official blu of TFA sometime soon to finish it off. That might be it until TLJ but I’ve got a nice stretch of vacation in November and I’m debating about maybe marathoning them all in short order before seeing TLJ in December if I can get the better half on board…

Is anyone else really happy that the color scheme of the Tantive scenes in Rogue One matches the original set, and nothing else? I’ve seen both official and unofficial bits of media mimic the dreadful blueish grey scheme from the Blu-ray to a teethe, so I was delighted to see Edwards didn’t pay attention to that at all.

In general it seems like they’re really paying closer attention to the theatrical colours in the post Disney purchases. (Not really a spoiler as it’s easily shown in the teasers, but Twin Suns from Rebels reminded me more of the Theatrical colours for Tatooine than the Blu-Ray’s colours).

Rogue One though really shows off the original colours the best though (though the footage of Red Leader seemed a bit desaturated)

Even in Sith, the colors of Organa’s shop resemble theatrical Tantive more than BD.

Also, they may be going off the new scan for color matching, whatever version it is.

In response to canofhumdingers, I find Jedi almost unwatchable now.

Return of the Jedi is fine, except when the Ewok nonsense goes too far.

I’m the opposite really. The ewoks are mostly okay by me, maybe just should have had some trims done in the cutting room. For me jabbas palace is the stinker in Jedi. Not Jabba himself, but all the Muppets he’s surrounded by and the excessive camp and cheese of many segments. (Fucking hate the thermal detonator sequence. If I ever get around to finishing my edit of rotj I’m removing it entirely and just having it inferred Leah and chewie are already there. ) marks performance in Jedi is great enough to not want to dismiss the film entirely though.

“Younglings”
*dies laughing

I’ve always called them “deadlings”. That heartwarming training scene in AOTC with Yoda was ruined by my realization all those kids were going to be dead meat in the next movie. Thanks George! 😉

Does anyone realize that SW has been creatively bankrupt for 35 YEARS NOW!

Besides redlettermedia?

Well the franchise is worse off than it was than in 1997. Even if Disney gives the OUT in 4K quality, we still have to deal with half a dozen films that just cover the same ground as ANH/ESB. How many times can you see AT-AT’s in a film before the audience gets bored? Disney is a far more cynical filmmaking company than prequel-era Lucas ever was.

In your opinion. Which most of the world doesn’t share.

No one has to “deal” with movies. You can ignore them (like I wish I could to you on this forum again) and the rest of us can enjoy them.

How can you ignore them when 95% of movies released today are corporate tentpole blockbusters pandering to Chinese audiences? Will anyone like it when the Star Wars franchise is reduced to two good movies and twenty mediocre ones?

Disney is not about storytelling anymore, its about EXPLOITING NOSTALGIA to make a profit.
