That a documentary made in 2004 wasn’t shot in HD, (if only to future proof it) is weird.

Are you kidding? There were tv shows back then not filmed in HD, nevermind a silly documentary.

Shows shot on videotape, sure. Again, the industry knew HD was around the corner. Unless those involved thought a comprehensive doc about Star Wars and it’s impact on the world was an ephemeral project.

You consider EOD silly?

Empire of Dreams and Dangerous Days are my all time favorite film documentaries

Which ones? Star Trek Enterprise was in HD, and it went off the air by 2005. Spielberg was talking about HD content in the 1990s, so it’s not like it would be crazy to shoot HD in 2004.

JEDIT: Above post reminded me there’s a big difference between TV shows and home video bonus content.

Enterprise was shot on film until the last season when it was shot digitally. All effects were completed in 720p.

Absolutely. It was crap. Really didn’t tell us anything that we didn’t know.

And, in 2004, HD wasn’t just “around the corner.” It came out in 2002 but that doesn’t mean everything was being shot that way. I doubt the budget was that high on this but who knows? Regardless, HD was still relatively new at the time.

I consider this viewpoint silly. We aren’t a monolithic fanbase, and EOD was the first SW documentary I watched. It told me plenty I didn’t know and showed my lots of footage I hadn’t seen. It got progressively worse as it went along (especially the very end where it turned into a Lucas-is-great lovefest), but I found it captivating for the most part.

Since when is the Star Wars fan base NOT monolithic?! And because you hadn’t watched the other available documentaries, that proves that you were an uneducated consumer. That’s exactly who they were marketing this to.
Like the Indy docs, the only saving grace was the new “original” footage, be it behind the scenes or outtakes. Otherwise, the interviews were just recycled stories.

I just proved it isn’t. And there were a lot more people like me than people like you when this came out. That’s probably still the case.

No fan base is monolithic. You can’t find me a single one that is.

Here’s another example…how many people care about the EU? How many have read a single book or comic? 0%? 100%?

And because you hadn’t watched the other available documentaries, that proves that you were an uneducated consumer. That’s exactly who they were marketing this to.

Yep. That doesn’t make EOD crap, it just makes it crap for you.

Recycled for you.

EoD is terrific.

Maybe I’m a not-fan either!

I enjoyed EoD for the most part though it got cluttered from time to time. A shame the current sets don’t include it though.

I loved EoD. Always have, always will.

Pfft. That makes you a not-fan.

Next he’ll claim he doesn’t enjoy the Holiday Special. The true fan / non-fan test!

Back on topic: 4K Holiday Special anyone? Let’s up-res that old video tape.

Hey, if this rumor about it being remastered in hd turns out to be true they could throw it in as an extra on the inevitable I-IX UHD box set just like how they included the vintage making-ofs from 77-83 on the blu-ray.

Yes. For me. Recycled crap. Watched once and done. But feel free to make it about all of fandom when that wasn’t my intent at all.

But, yeah, I’d say that if you learned a lot by watching it, you probably haven’t seen or read much about these movies previous to that.

So…you finally went and looked up “monolithic” then?

At this point I think the main reason I’m hoping this 4K OOT happens is so that I can stop coming here for bootlegs and getting sucked into the whirlpool of combativeness and negativity the General Star Wars Discussion board has become.

You’re wrong! This sub forum isn’t monolithically bad!

EoD is pretty much the best Star Wars documentary. I enjoyed it a lot.

High Definition video was around in the 80’s. At least one tv movie and a feature film were shot in the earliest HD format.

The first HD broadcast in the US was in June of 2002. I’m not talking about HD as a format.
