What's So Bad About California?

So as not to hijack the Emotional Support thread…

Yeah but that’s not specific to California.

Then you should put “exclusively bad” in the question. In any case it will be very hard to find anything that is exclusively bad.

Completely irrelevant to the point but thanks for stopping by.

I dunno what conversation this has spun from, but maybe someone said “California” when they meant “Florida”?

I could visit California for a few weeks, probably, but there’s no way on earth I’d want to live there. I accidentally said this to someone from California and suffered the consequences of a poor first impression.

Why?

Handman said:

For pretty much the same reasons I wouldn’t want to live in Texas or Florida.

I guess the large population of people who can’t speak English could be irritating to people. That usually doesn’t bother me though, I love CA.

People get funny ideas about California. That all of it is like Los Angeles. It’s not. That it’s warm and sunny all the time. We’ve suffered through a long miserably cold and wet winter after years of drought. (The last storm that blew through threatened to break my sliding glass door, and tore up my patio.) But at least I never have to shovel snow, or see it up close. The last winter I spent on the East coast put me off snow for good.

And in spite of being a “blue” state, you’ll easily find people on the red side of things. I’m smack in the middle of what was called Reagan country. He was once our governor you know!

I lived in a lot other places when I was kid, but this is my home. Some kids would treat me differently upon learning I had lived out here, don’t know why they had a negative impression of the state. Only other place I’d rather live is Florida, land of my birth, but I’d just be trading earthquakes and brush fires for hurricanes and sinkholes. 😉

Hey, you seemed to like the hour you spent in Albuquerque. 😉

It has a Gini coefficient of 0.471, ranked #44 in the United States and the same as the Dominican Republic.

This I did not know, but stands to reason.

Except for the hard to breathe because of the altitude part. 😉

Either you get used to it or you die, so you don’t have to worry about it for long in either case. :p

Does the Dominican Republic have Disneyland and the Universal Studios Tour? :p

Here’s a good reason to avoid California: earthquakes.

I had never heard of it either, but there’s this amazing new thing called Google that helped me out.

Is he wrong? Some people are definitely irritated by that. He didn’t say it irritates him, in fact he said it doesn’t.

There are quake faults all over the country and the world. Washington DC got hit by one a few years back, and the Washington Monument had to close for repairs.
And then there’s this:

And goodness knows what Irwin Allen wet dream all the byproducts of fracking activity might unleash eventually.

Another California myth people seem to buy into is the entire state would somehow fall into the ocean when the big one hits. And this was before the silly disaster movies of recent vintage.
