I remember not knowing the difference in full frame vs widescreen until I saw a widescreen version of ANH on tv when I was about 13. I was blown away!

The first time I saw the OT in Widescreen, was when the SE was released in the Theaters. Before that, it was full frame/pan scan versions.

I saw the SE of ANH in the theatre but I was 4 so I honestly don’t remember it much so my first proper introduction to the OUT in Widescreen was when I got the '92 Letterboxed VHS set off eBay about 14 years ago.

No one should have any version of the SE, pan and scan or widescreen. Except for the Blu-rays, of course, in order to fully enjoy all the fan efforts offered on this wonderful site.

True. I never really understood why the SW logo had to recede faster in the SE. The only thing I do like that the SE crawl did was begin to roll up before the SW logo faded out. At least that way it fits with the other episodes.

They could have easily done it digitally without recomping every single element. It just seems like they went to a lot of work for not a lot of pay off.

Yeah the composition of the original was already beautiful of they wanted a new crawl they could’ve just done that.

Perhaps to some this is old news but I just noticed something that serves somewhat of a continuity error. During the sequence in the SE of ANH of the Jawas falling off the Ronto in Mos Eisley, if you look closely in the background (you can clearly see it in the original unaltered film) you can see the cantina. The reason I said this serves somewhat of a continuity error is because of the CGI’d Luke speeder added to the shot. However the SE also added a large dome like building in the background among a few other new additions that are not present when they arrive at the cantina even in the SE. So assuming this was meant to be a part of Mos Eisley they had already passed before arriving at the cantina, it also serves a bit of a continuity error in the original as well.

I say it was the removal of the wolf guy, the SE color saturations, and CGI jabba. Jabba is here because we were supposed to build up suspense to see what jabba looked like in ROTJ but the surprise had to be ruined, right george?
build up suspense? Since 1983, everybody has seen Jabba and knows what he looks like. If you’re talking about new audiences that haven’t seen Star Wars ever, then yes, he ruined the surprise. I liked the scene, due to the fact, it showed that Han Solo was in dire need of money, and this charter was going to set him straight with Jabba. When things went south and Luke mentioned the princess had money and the reward would be more well than you can imagine, he took the chance, because he knew he would never be able to go anywhere without somebody recognizing him and collecting the bounty he had on his head.
That deleted scene incorporated back into the film, was important for us viewers old and new to know he had to do what he had to do for the money, regardless if that wasn’t really who he was. We knew Jabba would put a price on his head, if he didn’t deliver the money. Solo was asking for a little time, that’s what he got.
He didn’t take the money to Jabba after the awards ceremony is because the Empire was looking for the Falcon and everyone knew Captain Solo was the pilot, so the Empire already had a bounty out for him during the Battle of Yavin, and Jabba would have just captured him after he delivered his money to the gangster, and he would have turned him in to the Empire and collected another large sum of money.
As far as a SE pointless change. I always hated the, “Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival.” It wasn’t needed and took us away from the Falcon as it was trying to escape Bespin. I wanted to see the original, in fact, I wanted to see the extended Lando and Luke scene atop the Falcon. Mark Hamill broke his thumb I think, or something like that.

First with the Greedo scene as is, the Jabba scene is really pointless as it just repeats much of the same dialogue. Second, it spoils the Millenium Falcons reveal. Third CGI Jabba is unconvincing regardless of which version you watch. Now if they had completed that scene to include as a DVD extra to give fans the idea of what Lucas had intended with the scene I could accept it more. But the more I watch it within the film itself the more it just comes across as unnecessary, for me at least but to each his own. The plot line of Solo owning Jabba money is still within the films storyline regardless of the version watched.

My dad, who’s only seen the movie less than 5 times, even complained when I showed the SE to him a few years back. He goes “what, jabbas‽ I remember what a big deal he was when ROTJ came out. Ruins the reveal”

I wonder if the color timing didn’t fuck one of them up, and instead of fixing the timing, they just made both match (because the fucked up color timing was actually a deliberate creative decision).

This would mean that at least in one of the two scenes it is a deliberate choice to recolour the sleeves. All this makes the change only more baffling to me. They took the time and attention to make these two scenes match, but broke continuity in so many other scenes; lightsabers having different colour from one scene to the next, the Bespin windows being there when they eneter the conference room with Vader, but not in the reverse shot, and so on.

Ya know, if they only did it in one instance and not the other, I could understand that maybe they wanted to make it seem like two different lizard-men. But changing both… there’s no reasoning. It’s really the most pointless change.
