Wasn’t it mastered on D1? At least that’s what I read somewhere, that TNG was mastered on D-1 and later they upgraded to D-2,
Not sure how widespread digital tape was when TNG was airing. And if the show was delivered to stations via satellite, (more than likely) the picture quality is only as good as the equipment it’s being recorded/played back on.

Probably, but some local U.S. tv stations outside major cities were still using analog broadcast formats. Satellite delivery of tv shows was more economical and practical than sending tapes out. (And digital tv signals didn’t exist yet.) Unless you lived in a major tv market, you might not have been seeing shows on the same format they were mastered in. And if you didn’t have cable tv, that’s a different can of worms.
Laserdisc releases of TNG episodes probably looked better than most broadcasts did.

What are some of what you guys would consider the most ridiculous episodes of Star Trek? I don’t necessarily mean the worst episodes, I think we’d all probably have similar lists that would no doubt include Spock’s Brain and Code of Honor, but rather those that are just plain silly and generally bizarre. I always think of the TNG episode where Wesley has to close his eyes and press buttons with the Traveller to get the warp zone to open again so Dr. Crusher can get back from the parallel universe. I’d also include Justice, if anything just for the costumes.

Sub Rosa. It had the potential to be a really spooky gothic story, except for Dr. Crusher writhing in orgasmic bliss every time her new ghostly boyfriend “enters” her body. 😉
If TNG had been on a network, they never would have gotten away with that!
Also, that episode where a virus makes everybody on the ship de-evolve. Even Data’s cat!

I know I am a minority but Sub Rosa and Genesis belong to my favourite TNG episodes 😃 I love Braga’s “weird” stories.
“I, Mudd” is one of my favorite episodes of TOS, mostly because it’s also ridiculous.

“The Way to Eden” had me in disbelief, but as for a bizarre episode that isn’t necessarily bad, an example that comes to mind is “Masks” from TNG season 7. Also “Phantasms”. Really, anything involving Data acting weird.
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
Episode 9 Rewrite, The Starlight Project (Released!) and ANH Technicolor Project (Released!)
Totally off-topic here but… NeverarGreat, where is your avatar from? Is it from MAD magazine? It looks familiar but I can’t place it.
I got it from this thread http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/The-Retro-Star-Wars-Thread/id/51402/page/2
…however, the original image seems to be gone. It was definitely a Japanese promo artwork of some kind. It probably looks like MAD because of his drunken smile, which is why it is my avatar in the first place 😃

I’d love to say Voyager’s “The Thaw”. Watching it for the first time, I thought it was flippantly ridiculous, but it slowly started getting decent and it had a fantastic ending. Though Voyager certainly takes the cake for ridiculous episodes cough Threshold cough
What, a man builds a giant mound of dirt in his house and you aren’t entertained?

Was it from this piece? http://s637.photobucket.com/user/define999/media/define999013/mural_Japanese_star_wars1.jpg.html
I’ve been digging trying to find it, and that’s all I can come up with. No pics of the adjoining page.

That’s it all right.

I’d also add TNG’s Night Terror’s and Identity Crisis. Geordie turning into an upright-walking cat was just too much for that, especially since it was so spooky and mysterious before.

I wonder how many fans have made a Troi cellular peptide cake, (with mint frosting) over the years? 😉

I thought he turned into a chameleon lizard? Using the holodeck to spot the mysterious shadow not cast by any of the landing party is one of the best “aha!” moments in the series.

I can’t think of any at the moment. But undoubtedly they’ll all be from Voyager.

I seem to remember cat-like eyes. You’re right though that the mystery was great, but I thought the reveal was just way too weird for me.

Angel One, yeah that’s another episode the cast would probably like to see lost in a vault fire.
I find it amusing that Doctor Who almost did a story about a female dominated society during Patrick Troughton’s tenure in the late '60’s. Can’t recall why they never went into production with that script, but they probably dodged a bullet in any case.
It was transformed into a mini comedy series for The Two Ronnies called The Worm That Turned.

The technobabble didn’t help any, either.
Can I say that I truly hate what happened to the opening and closing theme for TOS S2?
I get adding the vocal and extending the credits but the mix isn’t very good and I LOVED the feel of the S1 opening. This one just feels…weird…every episode.

No I think that violates the new forum rules

Are you sure you’re watching the original? They redid it for the “special edition” versions with the new CGI FX.

Seems like he’s only talking about the audio though.

That’s what I mean. They did a modern recording of the theme with a new vocalist. The only vintage element was Shatner’s narration.
