I’ve also heard about that, but every copy of the ROTJ novelization I’ve seen has that passage still in it.

My Kindle copy of the trilogy keeps the familial relation. I think the novels are the one thing that doesn’t get endlessly changed.

If that was how the films were treated, this forum wouldn’t exist 😄

I get the sense he’s talking in a more meta sense than a “it’s actually different” sense.

Right. Like, the picture is clearer than he’s ever remembered probably.

The DP of Rogue One Greig Fraser mentions that they had a look at the 4K versions of Star Wars AND Empire in the February issue of American Cinematographer:

“With Gareth Edwards, we wanted to be attentive that the look be consistent with A New Hope, which is seared in our brains. We weren’t necessarily trying to reproduce what it actually looked like, but how we remember it — there’s a difference between reality and the remembrance of reality. Part of our research was to look at the 4K scanned versions of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. They look fantastic, but they don’t look how I remember them.”

Not sure if that means that more digital nonsense has taken place with the movies.

I’m not sure, but please call me Shirl.

I’d be more likely to guess that he’s meaning the ‘colour grading’ is very different to how he remembers…

I doubt that very seriously. Color grading is not something most people outside of this forum care about.

DPs care a whole lot about color grading actually. He easily could have been talking about that to some extent.

Maybe, but if it’s the colors from the RMW 4K reel, then I doubt it because they look like everything before the DVD/Blu-Ray. Unless the colors ended up being really weird afterward of course.

Yeah but remember he said different than his memory.

I wonder what’s going on with Jedi.

It’s the only one absent from RMW’s reel and Fraser doesn’t mention it in his interview.

Either it wasn’t done in time, or they think it’s the black sheep of the trilogy and didn’t need to look at it. Or both. Hard to believe it would just be ignored completely on the scanning side of things.

Harry Potter just dropped in 4K. SRP $44.95 a title and currently pre-ordering on Amazon at that price, no box set, while the 2016 Blu Ray is selling on Amazon for $8.

  1. Can’t believe that price.
  2. A per-title release instead of box is interesting. Even more interesting is we’re getting the last four in the series first, with the other four titles coming later in 2017.

For the OT, if we get 4K (and even if not), I like the individual title release idea, but $45 per title?? New releases don’t even fetch that on the format. Hopefully we won’t get gouged like this if the OUT comes around this year.

Aside from tv sales, is 4K even making a dent in the market? There only seem to be a couple players even available, although I haven’t checked out the displays since December.

Where were you in '77?

4k is doing better than Blu-ray did at the same point in its life-cycle right now, last I checked. I think we’ll have to wait a few years for it to be more prominent. But we’re not going to have a DVD-like phenomenon ever again.

I doubt very seriously that they wouldn’t restore Return of the Jedi. Maybe it just wasn’t done in time. Who knows, but I really doubt they’d ignore it just because it’s considered lesser than the first two.

I think Handman is more saying they didn’t study it when making Rogue One because it’s the black sheep, not that it wasn’t restored for that reason.

And the Reliance reel is a few years old IIRC. Entirely possible ROTJ wasn’t far enough along to be included.

It’s a good thing you weren’t around for laserdiscs.

I never had LD, but I remember they were pricey at the stores. It was a niche market.

Maybe cause there is more detail cause of the resolution and restoration than he remembers and that’s why they don’t look how he remembers them.
