I’ll be releasing a balls to the wall version encoded at maximum settings with uncompressed audio output.

Since you mention it and that they are now 1000% finished, would you also do the same with your PT ? (by the way the new crawls really look nice; new texts are also an improvement, it’s subtle yet better; good call about the colors that aren’t the same, I don’t remember if it was the case for the theatrical versions).

Due to the shortened runtime, little compression was used in the first place on them. Ep1 has noise (grain) added, and Ep2 is based on a noisy HDTV capture. Episodes 2 and 3’s audio mix is based primarily on DVD audio, and all use deleted scenes.
All in all, it wouldn’t make sense to output a version higher than what will fit onto a BD25.

Ok ! I’m asking 'cause I don’t use BD25 but a Kodi system, so I haven’t really thought about that. I also forgot that you used dvd sound sources for II and III (to be quite frank I’m not eve sure I could tell the difference between 448 or 640 kbps 😄).

think i am okay with the crawl, though i think the only thing that i would change is instead of “desperate for her brother’s help…” i would make it “desperate for help…” but whatev’s

Dominic the SFX are really well done i like it a lot.

also where are we with the “Its the first order THEY’VE FOUND US…” vid/audio??

The audio is finished I believe (last version I’ve heard was perfect); the video was still discussed about what SFX shot to use for the FO Destroyer and Ren’s shuttle.

We decided on using the star destroyer, not the shuttle. But I believe Ridley is working on it.
Neverargreat is working on the sequence going from the end of the duel to arriving back at the Resistance base.
And I’m working on the crawl. And I think that’s pretty much all that remains. 😄

The SKB sequence is complete, as far as I’m concerned, so it’s ready for final render 😃

On another note, the final shot of the film has bothered me since my first viewing, since it weaves and bobs drunkenly. I scaled it 107% and stabilized it: https://vimeo.com/201330286

What do you think? I know it’s not strictly related to the edit. 😃

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

(as far as I’m concerned the ending “helicopter shot” is absolutely hideous. So cheap, so weird - looks like Luke is played by a dummy -, so out of place, so… dumb… I would completely remove it)

Well done! Now the shot finally looks as epic as it’s supposed to be 😃

I don’t think it’s entirely out of place, but it doesn’t work well at the end. I made a mockup of how this scene might end differently, but it’s definitely outside the scope of this edit:

Well, I don’t like it either. This helicopter movement does not belong here at all. It should have been a static shot (like in your edit - except I would suggest to finish on Luke, not Rey -, but without the helicopter shot), not that (I’m talking about the theatrical cut, not your effort to make it right). There are several ugly shots in this movie but this one deserves an award both for ugliness and silliness. IMHO of course 😄

Ah, thanks for that NeverarGreat, nicely done! - over on the TFA fan edit ideas thread I described how I’d prefer to swap the ‘helicopter shot’ over with the final close-ups of Luke or Rey too, and it’s neat to see that it works perfectly. 😃

I don’t know if anyone else will end up using this particular tweak for their final TFA scene or not, but if I was to include the ‘island’ meeting sequence at all (depending on how THE LAST JEDI starts), then this is definately the way I’d choose to do it - some might prefer to have Luke as the final close-up instead of Rey, which would work well too…but I think that Rey’s earned the final shot due to this movie being about her eventful journey to this point, and the fact that I like her momentary, detemined look as the end credits begin.

I personally feel that ending on leia and watching the falcon leave is a better ending. i would rather just not see luke until TLJ

Besides that way you could have the ending with 3PO and R2. Love the idea !

Not sure if you mean you’d end on the actual ‘group’ shot where C3PO waves, or not…but DigMod’s version ends just afterwards when the Falcon jumps to hyperspeed - it works really well, although it remains to be seen how THE LAST JEDI will continue with it’s Luke and Rey scenes.

While I love what NeverarGreat did with the TFA ending, I kinda lean to seeing the Falcon arrive at Luke’s ‘island’ in the distance before wiping to the end credits, as my preferred way to keep Luke’s appearance until the next movie.

For anyone that hasn’t seen this yet, this particular version by a guy called ‘Jyndir’ happens to be the way I’d have loved TFA to conclude, especially since it sounds so epic (except I’d include the usual end credits wipe that we normally hear) - https://vimeo.com/168168098

(apologies for this continued slight detour from your project Hal)

That’s definitely going in TFA:Restructured. WITHOUT setting up a slippery slope, I’m gonna make an exception.

If I go with the most recent revision of the crawl I posted, I will need to change the second sentence from, “plotting their return to power,” to, “plotting its return to power.”
‘The First Order’ is a singular subject, and another verb in the sentence already treats it as such (“has risen”).

So, the first paragraph would read: Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen in secret from the ashes of the fallen Empire, plotting its return to power."

They return to power since they form from the remnants of the Empire and the Empire had power.

I think this is as perfect as it can be. It gives the “mcguffin”, some political info, and a clue that there is more going on.

About the third paragraph, a question: why is Poe’s mission so daring ? Is Jakku supposed to be under FO juridiction since the “fake” peace signed with the NR ?

Author
Time

I swapped adjectives around to avoid using ‘secret’ twice.
The theatrical described Poe as daring, implying it’s why he was selected for the mission.

I could call the Resistance “brave,” as in the theatrical, and Poe’s mission “covert.” But, I like “covert RESISTANCE.”

I could perhaps resolve the problem of correct grammar implying that the FO once held power with this:
“Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen in secret from the remnants of the fallen Empire, plotting their return to power.”

It is too much of a stretch to describe “ashes” as plotting “their” return to power, but perhaps “remnants” would work.
