OPEN MATTE - Master List

Every time I want to know if a given title has an open matte version, I must looking for all over the net… I searched a lot for a complete list of open matte movies, but what I have found are meagre lists with just few dozen titles (when I was lucky!); so, I thought it was time to compile a comprehensive list, THE master list… currently, there are more than 2000 entries!

Hope it will be helpful for someone; you are free to post the link everywhere, to help find out as many titles as possible, and to correct all the errors (and I’m pretty sure there are many).

I’ve decide to let the list reside into my blog, just to avoid to update the same list scattered around various forums; for any addition and correction, you could post a comment here or directly on the blog; write first the title(s) (with as many info as possible) then eventual comments; have fun, and without much further ado, here you are the

Also wanna say thanks. As an 80’s baby who grew up on full-screen VHS, I’ve always loved the Open Matte presentation. Boom mics be damned lol.

Titanic also has an OM HDTV version that has the full width of the VFX plates, unlike the 3D version, where they were cropped and zoomed into.

Plus, there is Jurassic Park 2 and 3 - OM 4:3 DVDs, OM 1.78:1 HDTV version. Mostly OM, the VFX shots are pan & scan or a mixture of both.

BTW, Andrea, are the Harry Potter longer broadcasts available, as you mentioned on your workprint list?

Thanks for the input, I added them to the main list in my PC, will show up in the next update.

Harry Potter: as I wrote, I just gathered info from several sources in the web, so frankly I don’t know, sorry!

That’s why a project maker could step in… 😄

I have a strong desire to create fan-edits of the Jurassic series for a long time now. The issue is my PC hardware and lack of time. Let’s see, I’ll try.

As for Harry Potter, WB should first release ALL the deleted scenes in a remastered Blu-ray of all the films.

Regarding Harry Potter:
The first two films were directed by Chris Columbus, and he was the only director in the series interested in participating in the making of extended editions of the films. That I suppose lends those extended editions a legitimacy that the others don’t - which may be why you can buy them in stores.

The other six films have “extended cuts” that were cobbled together by Warner Bros. for ABC Family… those edits aren’t terribly good, if I recall. People here could do a better job.

For ‘Azkaban’, the additional scenes are totally inconsequential, as nearly all of them revolve around a subplot which is completely nonsensical and not even fully represented in the deleted scenes. They’re best left on the cutting room floor.

Forgot to add ‘Jurassic World.’

The film is shown open-matte on Cable broadcasts. Most of the film was shot on super 35, 4-perf, so the 1.78:1 aspect ratio includes more headroom. Its especially noticeable in the VFX shots including the dinosaurs. However, a limited number of scenes were shot using the Panavision super 70 camera and lenses which lends a 2.20:1 (roughly) frame. These were slightly cropped to achieve the 2.00:1 ratio of the film. Those shots are cropped to 1.78:1 at the sides but the crop is barely noticeable.

JW really gains from the open-matte as lots of dinosaur scenes (almost all of them) like the Raptor squad scenes, The Mosasaurus and T-Rex scenes as well as the Indominus, have that IMAX-like expansion due to more vertical information that were cropped in the 2.00:1 version.

HBO NOW and HBO GO did show JW in OM for a month until it was pulled off from its website. Canal+ and various other HD broadcasts are also open matte. It looks good!

No, that’s on the list. I’m talking about The Santa Clause (1994), with Tim Allen.

Indeed, Tomb Raider has a lot of great full open matte shots available in 1.33:1 frame size - can’t say it is the whole film frame, but those shots are way better than letterbox version!

I’ve got some to contribute to this list. For starters, here’s 300: Rise of an Empire.

Of course, each comparison has the theatrical AR from a home video release at the top and the bottom is the open matte SDTV broadcast.
