Trump is now President, God help us all.

Is this a good time for me to hope God exists?

sure, why not? At least you’d believe there was someone with the power to stop Trump.

Actually, if he/she/whatever does, I doubt he/she/whatever cares what our stupid country does to itself.

I disagree here. The God I believe in cares about the whole world.

He cares but according to the Bible he isn’t overly compassionate to the unrepentent masses when it comes to political developments.

According to the Bible, he cared enough about them that he sent his son to die for them and gave them a chance at redemption.

Now I’m 100% agnostic but if I remember correctly, God sent Jesus for the world, not just a handful of people that couldn’t get along.

When you open your heart to patriotism, there is no room for prejudice.

I sure am glad he’s moderating the authoritarian overtones.
/s

JEDIT: His entire statement is so much worse:

"At the bedrock of our politics will be a total allegiance to the United States of America and through our loyalty to our country, we will rediscover our loyalty to each other. When you open your heart to patriotism, there is no room for prejudice. The Bible tells us how good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity. We must speak our minds openly, debate our disagreements honestly, but always pursue solidarity.

When America is united, America is totally unstoppable.

There should be no fear. We are protected, and we will always be protected. We will be protected by the great men and women of our military and law enforcement. And most importantly, we will be protected by God."

“There should be no fear” - A tacit admission that everyone is terrified, and feel the need to invoke the police, the military, and God to protect them.

It also sounds like ‘God’s people’ is limited to just ‘Americans’, since that sentence is in the paragraph about fanatical patriotism! What happens when ‘God’s people’ wish to pursue solidarity with other nations? This just keeps getting better and better.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I’m pretty sure God’s all like “you got yourselves into this mess, you get yourselves out of it.”

This is hard to come by these days, even in the real world, unfortunately.

I know it’s going to be historic. The man is funny AND seems to be efficient. Obama had good speeches but without intelligent actions speeches are worthless, and so are Obama’s 8 years: worthless. He only brought more wars than Bush and let ISIS spread. So yeah, thanks Obama, really… won’t miss you…

Do you complain about your own country’s leaders this much?

I do.
The guy is right.
He was elected as some kind of modern messiah figure and carried on bombing the middle east and torturing people. He is was as effective as a leader as Bush (as in he was a figure head with very little real influence).
David Cameron however had real power. He assumed he would win Brexit and silence the eurosceptics in his party for a generation and lost the UK probably trillions. Bush and Obama are fake news.
Cameron is a really evil dick and Theresa May is the g-spot of evil.

How do you come to the conclusion that W. Bush and Obama were just figure heads with real influence while David Cameron had real power??? Also if W. Bush and Obama were just figureheads, just you do you think was really in charge? Congress?

https://youtu.be/OyBNmecVtdU

I guess from that, that you think the military industrial complex is really in charge. But I still do not understand why you think David Cameron was not a figurehead.

On it’s own the UK is a largely uninfluential tiddly little collection of countries so nobody bothered to disarm the post of Prime Minister. However in screwing up and accidentally triggering Brexit Cameron has started a chain reaction that could have enormous international consequences. Current US presidents are too well managed to do anything near as significant without the permission of the powers that really be. May is getting a trip to the vet by the look of things though.

Hillary supporters were assholes too. Remember Lena Dunham?

Hillary shows great class, far more than Trump would have been able to, by attending the inauguration and the luncheon. And that’s how she’s paid back. At least Trump thanked her.

And of course you compared this to Lena Dunham, which is completely irrelevant.

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/features/welcome-to-donald-trumps-ignorant-america-w462019

The day before Donald Trump’s inauguration as president of the United States – an actual event taking place in the universe we live in – news broke that his administration plans to eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities. And I wanted to scream.

This is Donald Trump’s America: one where things like art and books and science and learning and thoughtful consideration of complicated problems are deemed worthless and tossed aside. This can’t be surprising after the Trump we saw on the campaign trail, the man who never answered a question with a hint of intelligence or depth. In an interview this week, he couldn’t name a single book he’s reading. He’s appointed a secretary of education who wants to destroy public schools. He reportedly offered a notorious anti-vaccination activist a position leading a commission investigating vaccines. He called global warming a Chinese hoax.

We have a president who doesn’t read books. He doesn’t read books. Even George W. Bush read books, and he still managed to destroy the economy and entangle us in two unwinnable wars. What horrors will Trump visit upon the nation and the world? How will he change America for the worse?

Of course Donald Trump wants to destroy the government’s (frankly meager) efforts to promote the humanities and the arts. It’s not just that those things have never made the slightest impact on his life. (Imagine having a thoughtful discussion with Donald Trump about a piece of art. A painting. A song. A poem.) The arts and humanities are tools for getting at the truth of things. Trump hates the truth. He drapes himself in comforting lies about everything from the size of his hands to the size of his Electoral College victory. He doesn’t just lie constantly, he labels the truth a lie, the tellers liars.

We won’t fund public art programs, but we’ll have Breitbart in the White House briefing room. We won’t fund historical preservation projects or cultural explorations, but the president will attack journalists on Twitter.

Trump doesn’t have plans to make America great again; he’s going to remake America in his own image. He thinks art means plaster statues of eagles that look like they came out of SkyMall. He thinks news comes from Morning Joe and Fox & Friends. He separates books into two categories: those with his face on the cover and those without. (He doesn’t read either kind.)

Anyone believing that Hillary Clinton’s appearance at the Inauguration was due to her being a class act is deceiving themselves. She was there because she had to be, not because she wanted to be. It benefits her, not America.

She didn’t have to be there.
