"Is there someway to deal with this with a during the capture process?"

Yes, but it's not a good idea to attempt to compensate for bad video during the capture process, because if you over-compensate, you are stuck with it. A calibrated capture gives you a much better base to work on, and video-editing software allows you to make any non-permanent change to test various settings.

well, Since the last time a was able to get on this board I've written a dissertation, defended it, & will graduate this sat!!

But last week I've been able to spend some time with this project again. I captured all of SW but somewhere in the process I'm losing my surround sound. I'll be playing with this tonight to figure it out. Does anyone know if converting the orginal uncompressed audio to the mpeg layer 2 audio (384 bps) affects the surrond sound encode?

Hey congrats on that!!! THAT is a big accomplishment and takes lots of your time! (as I haven't worked on finishing mine in 6 years... grrr... )

Possibly, if you use joint stereo mode. Encode in full stereo to ensure that the surround information is retained.
