The Empire Strikes Back: Restoring the lightsaber cores project

Looks pretty good! The text at the beginning moves too fast though so it’s a little hard to read.,

I’m currently working on a version 2 which shall include a red Vader blade. Unfortunately, at the moment Vader’s blade is red, but Luke’s skin is a vibrant pink and his lightsaber is purple.

Have you guys seen telecine7s version? It completely rerotoscopes all the sabers but in a conservative way. It’s seamless and they look great.

Yeah, they do. Puts mine to shame.

It looks a little too red this time. It looks the best when his saber is slightly orange.

But he also didn’t do any color correction at all and redid the sabers on top of what was there in the correct color so if you wanted to do any color correction on out all lasers and sabers would become the wrong color. Luckily I like the blu ray colors, I just think they needed a contrast boost.

The blades look okay. But the contrast of the rest of the image makes it look way too washed out. Version 1 was better in this regard.

Also, it’s good to do color and contrast adjustments on just the picture area, with the black bars cropped out. Then, they’ll be added back when you render later. That way they’ll stay black throughout the film, instead of switching color and contrast. But in this case, leaving them there has helped depict what’s off about the contrast.

I’m uploading a v4.
I’m uploading a vfinal.
This is my last one. I’m stopping, well…
It’s the best I can do. I’m just an inexperienced person in front of a computer screen. This mostly was just me messing around, and I just don’t have any interest in continuing. If you want to see this restored scene, I suggest you view Harmy’s, or poilta’s restorations. If you wish to watch it with more modern updates, check out Adywan’s or telecine7’s.
As not to end on a negative note, here’s a small list of minor changes coming in v4:
-Contrast altering
-Colour correcting (color correcting in other places than Britain, and yes, I’m British if you didn’t already notice the TARDIS)
-Fixing some discoloured sparks back to white
If you want me to, I’ll work on an updated version of the scene with better effects! Just ask.

-Yours sincerely, Rafe

Everyone has to start somewhere. Good luck with whatever your next project will be.

Yep.

I’m just an inexperienced person in front of a computer screen.

That’s true of many of us. And for everyone else, it was true for them at one point, too.
