Indeed it is. It can be seen through the whole trilogy in many different shots

Figured that was the case, though I never went looking for them. Pretty clear in that one, though! I do recall hearing about the efforts of removing all those reflections from the (shinier) 3PO of RoTS.

Oh no you don’t! I just finished this reel to my liking, so you guys will just have to live with my less than perfect work.

😉

Hahaha, there’s nothing less than perfect about your work. It looks absolutely marvelous. I was just adding a different interpretation. 😃

I like both for different reasons, but if I had to pick one, I’d go with Neverar’s. (no offense Dre!, I’d watch yours all day long)

Both look really, really good. The skin tones in DrDre’s look really natural and R2’s body also. I would give in some more yellow in total (as I think the reflected sun light will add that), then it would be perfect for me.

Darth Id on ‘Why “Ben”?’:

And while we’re at it, we need to figure out why they kept calling Mark Hamill’s character “Luke Skywalker,” since it’s my subjective opinion that his name is actually Schnarzle Shnuzzle.  It just doesn’t make sense!

Damn you George Lucas for never explaining why they all keep calling Schnarzle “Luke”!

Damn You!!!

I’ve added a bit more yellow, and reduced the contrast somewhat:

Looks like a really nice compromise between your version and Neverar’s. Good stuff.

I liked the contrast of your previous version, but the sky really profits from either the reduced contrast or added yellows. DrDre, what if you lower the contrast just by a bit in comparison to the first version?
I fiddled a bit around with Photoshop and multiplied 30% luminance of the new one with the old one, which results in this:

I really like it, but it’s just my view through a calibrated, but not professional display.

NeverarGreat, if you don’t want this discussion in your project, I can of course move that to a private topic 😉

Looks a lot like your color balanced reel 1 of the LPP. That’s nice !

However, the blown out whites of the blu-ray remain in your attempt whereas Neverar resolved the problem in his work. So, I was interested about testing something : manually adjusting the curves of Neverar’s picture to approximately match yours, except for the far high color values. Here’s the (not perfect) result : http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/196918/picture:0 (compared to your last result and Neverar’s version).

Anyway, the question of the distinctive look of Tatooine’s scenes is still here and Neverar’s final result is probably the one that is the most correct.

I actually used Neverar’s result as a starting point, so the bluray’s blown out whites are definitely not there. I personally do prefer a more contrasty look, so that’s where the difference comes from.

Also, at this point the look of the Tatooine scenes is still debatable. However, I may have an opportunity to go to a private screening of a Technicolor print, so I hope that will provide some answers.

The extra contrast takes away the “film” look to me completely. REALLY liked the flatter one with “compromise” yellows though, seemed to be a great balance between “heavily stylized” and “raw camera footage.”

Wish we could all load into a van and go watch the tech with you! I hope that comes to fruition for you!

just as long as the details don’t ruin what i am already imagining about this: that there are large, cloaked airships, floating high above the earth, filled with off-the grid, independent, rebellious types. hacking into our wifi, hacking the signal, and hosting invite only screenings of the OOT star wars prints twice a year. once on Christmas, and once on may 25th. the rest of the time the spend posting rumors of official OOT releases on the internet to mess with the poor surface dwellers, which they call surfers.

Through the 4K77 project we came into contact with a private collector, who by chance lives reasonably close to where I live. Although he wants to remain anonymous, and is naturally very protective of his collection of films, he said might be willing to arrange a private screening of his Tech for me to help with the project’s color grading. 😃

Yeah, I think I also prefer the less contrasty version. Here’s another version, where I’ve adjusted the highlights, such that there is less blowout:

Thanks for the higher contrast sample, I really like it, although maybe it’s a bit too much contrast, as others stated. Would probably still be the version I would want to watch with my friends. Now I see that there might be too much green… Ah, it’s so hard to tell what’s correct. And that I’m looking at this on a different display now doesn’t make it easier 😄

Nice!!!

Hope you learn a lot from the private screening Dre. and that he has a nice large theater room that you can see it in. Hopefully, you can capture the real colors/contrast of the film.

Neverar, if you don’t mind me asking, what grain are you using? I want to swap in some de-specialized elements (such as getting rid of the ronto that walks in front of the screen) and I want to maintain visual consistency.

Also, let me say that your work is incredible and it will be my definitive, go-to version.

Author
Time

Why thank you!
I’m not using any grain, it’s just a color correction using whatever grain that is in the Blu-ray.

Interestingly, the blu-ray grain is almost certainly digital noise added by Lucasfilm in an attempt to camouflage the grain removal and sharpening they did on the negative.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Do you think they would have bothered going that far for the 2004 HD master? Aside from the fact that relatively few people would have really seen or discussed the HD version of it back then, standards were quite a bit lower in general (I am assuming the 04 and 11 have the same grain, but I don’t really have any clue).

I guess it could have simply been ugly enough that the noise reduction would have been too obvious even on DVD.

Author
Time

Interesting, it’s not really noticable in the blu-ray but it’s way more prominent in your corrected version. Weird.

Also, not to be annoying, but what program do you use for this? I want to try and do something similar with a couple scenes from ROTJ and I’d like them to match Harmy’s de-specialized version.
