It’s official!

WOODY HARRELSON SIGNS ON FOR YOUNG HAN SOLO FILM

Veteran film and television actor Woody Harrelson is stepping aboard the upcoming Han Solo movie set to arrive in theaters next year.

Harrelson, known for wide-ranging roles in film and TV such as The Hunger Games, No County For Old Men, True Detective, Cheers, and Zombieland, will join actors Alden Ehrenreich (Han Solo), Donald Glover (Lando Calrissian), and Emilia Clarke in the adventure. This Star Wars Story is the second in a series of films that live outside the Skywalker family saga, and is set during the early scoundrel days of the iconic characters, prior to A New Hope.

“We couldn’t be more excited to work with an artist with as much depth and range as Woody,” said the film’s directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. “His ability to find both humor and pathos, often in the same role, is truly unique. He is also very good at ping pong.”

The as-yet-untitled movie, which is being produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur, and Simon Emanuel, is scheduled for release in 2018.

Late to the discussion. No issues with any of the cast so far. Great choice for Solo. I can definitely see it working. I’ve only seen Glover in one thing and he was fine in a small role. Unlike several people here, I’m particularly excited to see Emilia Clarke get a place. I’m a fan of her away from GoT so it will be nice to see her get an identity outside of it.

I think Woody is going to be great in the movie. He’s the best part of the Hunger Games movies.

And the Toy Story movies!

This is the End was on TV the other day, so I can’t stop thinking of Jonah Hill’s Woody Harrelson impression whenever I see anything about this. “I have to do what’s right. Weed is for the people! It’s the people’s weed!”

Even if this film was somehow made perfectly, I’d still have a problem with accepting young Han not being Harrison.

Laugh it up, but I really got fooled by this whole buzz about Ingruber.

And now I hear even more controversial casting choices…

I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

nightmare scenario: Alden Ehrenreich has the CGI face of young Harrison Ford.

I think it’s safe to assume that even after the general audience’s praise of CGI Tarkin and Leia, Disney still wouldn’t pump money into doing young Han this way. And as the main character, it would also be a little insulting to Ehrenreich, who was sold to us as the new “face” of young Han.

That’s one of my issues with Rogue One doing these classic character recreations. If they’re recasting a young Han for this movie, why not just recast Tarkin and Leia. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the visual callback, but it seems to take away from the acclaim that Guy Henry, in particular, deserves. It also sets up the expectation that if we ever see young Leia again, she has to look like Carrie Fischer.

But it’s a moot point, and this is just my opinion, so I digress.

But the inclusion of Woody Harrelson has me so damn excited for this movie. And I’ve been against a young Han movie from almost the beginning. But this… changes things.

Weird, I’m a lot more interested in this than I was in Rogue One.

Woody is OK in some roles and not good in others.

When I read the articles today the much more worrying thing about this movie were the things the co-directors (??) said. These guys sound like total bozos.

And wtf would anyone want to watch a Han-Solo learning-from-his-mentor (?!?!?!) movie?

I still don’t get the point to make a Solo Solo movie. It’s gonna be lame. A GOTG kind of movie, with teen humor and teen interactions between the characters. And it’s probably going to be the best SW since The Empire Stikes Back

Regardless of whether one is for or against the CGI recreations, I don’t think it sets that kind of precedent. The Han Solo film will take place years before RO or SW/ANH. RO takes places days and hours before SW/ANH, and part of the nostalgic feeling that they were trying to summon, especially at the end of that film, was building a direct link to it.

As you’ll recall, this is why a lot of people pretty much exploded when a rumor surfaced that Alden would have a cameo as Han in Rogue One. Indeed, it would have been inconsistent to have only recast Han, and have him look more like he did 10 years earlier than he would a few days later.

Jan Dodonna would be the recasting exception, I guess. Presumably it was a small enough part that they didn’t worry about it. But also, to recreate the Tarkin model they really had to analyze and incorporate tons of footage from throughout Peter’s career. There’s not likely that kind of wealth of visual material for Alex McCrindle.

Oh, good, then there’s no reason for you to be in the thread and we’ll all get a break from insightful posts like this one.

They are comedy directors, first and foremost, so they’re going to be a bit goofy.

I’m imagining this is more like a Saw Guerra role, in for like 3 scenes and we’re left wondering why they made a big casting reveal for this.
