So here’s my take on Finn’s line “They’ve done it”, redubbing it as “They’ve found us”, including animation on the mouth to make it bite together a bit on the “us” rather than the original open mouth “it”.

What do you think?

It’s noticeably an edit but it’s done pretty well. Not quite there but definitely a start.

That’s pretty great - I think some leveling tweaks and you’ve got it. The audio seems to dip a bit on the “found” and then back up…try a subtle tweak to level the audio and I think it’ll make a big difference.

I improved it! I fixed the volume dip (thank you ForceGhostRecon), mixed better (thank you MalàStrana) with more tie sounds, and added a new score (thank you Kexikus). There’s still room for tweaks and fine tuning but I think it works much better already! Take a look:

That’s simply amazing!

Once this is completed I would very much like to get the full quality version with surround sound and everything 😃

Once we’ve gotten that clip into shape pretty much how we all like it, I would request an uncompressed output of your work without the TIE sound effects. This WILL address a major sticking point in V1, and I thank you again for the stellar contribution!

My stance on revising fan edits.

Man, you’re good ! With the new sfx shots the restructure is going to be as seamless as it can be. I might actually want to watch TFA again in this form (and a few other trims will be very much welcome as well).

Damn, that’s pretty good.

The new Boyega line works surprisingly well. Not perfect, but close.

I think the music you’ve put in is a big mistake though, as that exact music is used minutes later in that exact scene.

Most impressive! Now I only need that shortened Rathtar scene in this edit and my life will be complete! I appreciate you fellas so much, wow.

JEDIT: BTW, now that we have that awesome “they found us” line… should something be done to Maz’s “Those beasts, they’re here!” (at 01:09:30 in the current edit)? Feels a bit funny that no-one informed her about the incoming attack. Not as important as some other cuts though.

If the new music seems perfect and irreplaceable, we could probably replace it’s later appearance pretty easily.

Great work, that’s pretty close to seamless. The TIE sounds seem a little loud considering how far away they are but otherwise that clip is great.

Sure, but wouldn’t that just create the same problem but in a different spot? Not sure how the new music would be more perfect and irreplaceable than the existing use of the same music in the film as is.

I feel like a broken record saying this yet again, but why isn’t the castle a seething pandemonium when they see the First Order on the attack? Why doesn’t Finn and company immediately pull up and leave upon seeing this, since running was exactly what he said he would do in such a situation? Why don’t Han and Chewie immediately go to the Falcon to help fend off the attackers? Why in the face of annihilation is everyone instead taking some time out to ogle Luke’s lightsaber? I feel a bit like Yarael Poof here.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Well the edit doesn’t remove the main reason Finn sticks around which is that he cares about Rey and is worried with her missing that the FO has captured her. Him and Han and Chewie might not bolt for the Falcon when the whole reason they’re there is to get BB-8 safely to the Resistance (and he’s currently missing with Rey). Maz I guess would be making sure that the lightsaber makes it out of the castle in tact (and eventually to Rey). As for everyone else I think we have to assume they scramble off screen (as in the theatrical).

Great work, Sir Ridley! This is really coming together!

I like to think it is the fact that no one has probably seen a Star Destroyer or TIE Fighters for 30 years, so most of the people are just staring in disbelief at what they’re witnessing. The shock eventually wears off though and they all scream and scatter, like some already have according to the background screams in the initial shots.

I don’t mind the fact that the same music is used a few minutes later, but if something better can be found it’d definetly be an improvement.

And I agree that the “They’re here.” from Maz needs to be cut now. But I’d keep “Those beasts.” as a reaction to the First Order bombing the castle.

I see your point but it seems she does know they are coming, so she just confirms they now are here attacking the castle. But I’m however partially with you on this one: this line is not very good, especially if you consider that Finn was a few hours ago one of those beasts (I still believe it’s a huge error to imply that FO troopers are not serving the ashes of the Empire because they want to but because they are forced to… don’t know if Hal is going to slighly cut a few lines to remove that). I would remove the “Those beasts” while eventually keeping “they’re here!”.

Why would the music need to be changed for the “it’s the first order” scene ?

Yeah, I’ve noticed. We’ll see how we deal with this.

I’m working on a shortened Rathar sequence for my personal edit, actually. Maybe I should make a different thread for that one.

I wouldn’t say irreplaceable, but it’s a really good fit. I haven’t really tried much else. I’ve been thinking of cutting the “TIEs in sunset” shot which is tied to (sorry) that same cue later, and I’d probably have to edit the music to go better with that cut anyway. But if you want both the new music and the TIEs for your edit we’ll have to figure something else out I guess.

Thank you, yeah, I’m working on the sound editing and mixing of the whole scene.

I’ve tried editing the following scene a bit. I’ve removed the sunset TIE shot (replaced with a wipe), removed Maz saying “those beasts”, tightened up her giving the lightsaber to Finn and rescored most of the scene with some more “urgent” music since they know TIEs are approaching. The rescoring and cutting of the sunset shot also get rid of a part of the music that was inserted earlier when Finn spots the TIEs.

That’s great! I wonder if it might be more effective to cut to underground rather than side wipe. And I’d be fine with moving the TIE sunset shot to earlier in the film as a few others have done, if it’s better for this problematic sequence to remove it.

I really like what DigMod did with the rathrar scene.

Oh man! 😄

With that simple removal of “those beasts”, Maz seems to know the attack is coming and NOW they are here! Fan-tastic!

I’ll try a cut as well! To where did they move the TIE shot exactly?

That’s good! Quite similar to mine, except instead of “you okay” followed by the hatch and then everyone running to the Falcon I have “you okay”, then Han and Chewie run to the Falcon, then the hatch and finally Rey and Finn catching up.

Once again: Very well done.

I would remove the wipe though since usually those are used to go to a completely different location or to show that a larger amount of time has passed. And none of that is the case here. Additionally it didn’t look right to me.
The only other thing: The “They’re here.” shot seems a little short to me. There’s probably nothing that can be done about it but I wanted to let you know.

And while it’s a shame that the TIE sunset shot had to go I didn’t miss it at all when watching your little edit and it didn’t really fit in this scene anyway.

@Hal:
I remember that at one point you did some tests with pilot reaction shots for the Starkiller sequence in the end. Since I haven’t seen your V1 edit: Did you use those in the end?
