EDIT: Then again, I think that this entire forum is overly concerned with color correction. I think I might be in the minority there, though.

I’m with you.

Yeah, what kind of loser obsesses over the exact hue of the Death Star control panel lights?
I mean really, nobody cares!

I care about obvious shit like Hoth being blue or Vader’s lightsaber being pink, but half the time I see before and after pics here and they look nearly identical.

The sky being 0.02% too blue in one shot does not bother me in the slightest.

Yup

I’m worried more about the colars.

The Joke

On topic, I’ll believe that the OUT is on Blu-ray when I see it. There are a hundred and one things that could go wrong with it, not least of which is excessive DVNR, erased blaster shots and other effects, or getting yet another special edition to add to the pile.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Hoth being tinted blue strikes me as a half-assed attempt by Lucas to replicate the blue tint of Ralph McQuarrie’s production paintings of Echo Base. As much as I love me some McQuarrie art, it’s just not right to tamper with the color timing in that way.

Yeah, I still don’t get it.

I’ve always said this, but if Disney were smart, they would release a complete De-specialized OOT, as well as a middle ground release with vfx upgrades, but no altered dialogue or scenes. That is undoubtedly the product the public wants the most: the original movie, except corrections for visual effects that have become dated and don’t look real anymore.

Since you have to start with the OOT to get to the other, and the OOT needs to be preserved for historical purposes, it just makes sense to release both along with a new release of the SEs for people who would prefer to watch those.

There’s definitely examples where the coloring on the current masters is off (Frink pretty much listed the two that best come to my mind) but I have never been one to obsess over getting the colors just right. As long as they retain the original essence of the original colors, I don’t care if something’s are slightly off. A red light looks a slight orange? Not a big deal. A creatures blue skin is now green? That’s a big deal! However these are just random generic examples, not specifically pointing out anything. Just the same I’m glad the possibility of a proper OUT restoration might finally be upon us!

Color means a great deal to me, so long as it’s closer to the right and nowhere near the left, I’m fine.

I definitely dont want it to be like the 2011 version either but even if it came out to somewhere between those two images Id be fine!

They should just hire You_Too and Harmy as consultants for the color correction if they can’t figure it out themselves.

It’s not that difficult for paid professionals with the right references.

Or at least get permission to reference and credit their work (can you smell the irony??)

If Disney ever does release the OOT, at the very least I hope they reach out to some of the leading fan preservationists, either officially or privately. It would be the classy thing to do.

The 1997 SE at least had proper color correction- so something along the lines of that would be good. If Disney era Lucasfilm pushed a release back two years, we might be ok. The 2004 master was done in a total rush.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

This is the kind of demonstration that fills me with despair, and bittersweet resignation. That the blu-rays are that murky and lifeless is just astounding. (I’ve never seen them, and have no interest in seeing them.)
I don’t know if I’m as fussy about “perfection” as Tyrph, but the treatment of these films to date is entirely intolerable, and I’m fairly confident Humpty Dumpty can never be reassembled… .
[The fourth ellipsis is for extra bittersweetness…]

This “comparison” is not accurately representative of the Official 2011 Blu-Ray. I popped in my copy because I didn’t remember it looking that bad. Here is what it actually looks like:

If I’m not back in five minutes, just wait longer!

I don’t even think that the blu ray looks that bad in the image Mass posted. I’ve never seen the blu rays though.

^^^ Well that is indeed a lot better. The left-side of the comparison has a blacklight-purple smear that is clearly unfair. Your grab is still too saturated for my taste, but maybe it would be acceptable in motion.

Now THAT looks great. Definitely the best of the bunch. The current trend of oversaturation always comes across as dim to me, but yours looks like they actually had professional on-set lighting. Doesn’t have the flat yellowness of Yoo-Too’s either.

(She’s so pretty, too!)

Yeah - I think the compression exaggerated the faults of the Blu-Ray a bit in that video but the difference is still quite huge.
And Neverar’s looks amazing as usual, which is why I plan on using his corrections as the basis for v3.0 😃

“we do know that Disney and Lucasfilm have created a new 4K master of the original Star Wars (1977 – don’t ask us which version, though we strongly suspect they have 4K presentations of both the original and George Lucas’ preferred version).” - Digital Bits. I trust Bill Hunt’s strong suspicions more than most people’s.
