It’s a problem throughout the film - all surface level candy, nothing of substance.

Which is precisely the problem for the entire first sequence. It’s like watching a video game cutscene.

This was my problem with Rogue One, too.

The entire first sequence of Rogue One is like a video game cut scene? Did we watch the same movie?

I kept trying to make Krennick shoot Jyn’s dad but the controller wasn’t working.

As I’ve said before, I consider The Phantom Menace to be a good example of a 1990s sci-fi film, heavily laden with CGI but enjoyable entertaining silly fun nonetheless. See also Independence Day (1996), Starship Troopers (1997) and Men in Black (1997).

(BTW thread moved to General Star Wars Discussion as the topic has nothing to do with Theatrical Cuts vs Special Editions)

I sure wish there was a ‘like’ button on this site. 😃

(and in answer to the original question…yes, the prequels WERE that bad in many ways…are STILL that bad…and ALWAYS WILL BE that bad in their current form, unfortunately)

Just to pick on one of those supposed great scenes, Order 66 is terrible. The jedi are portrayed as clueless buffoons throughout the PT but at no point is it worse than that scene.

DominicCobb said:

Not to mention the over the top emotional music when why should we really care about any of those people? Most of ROTS is pretty much bullshit when you get down to it.

Obviously a movie should be able to stand on it’s own, and when looking at Order 66 purely through the lens of the movie, I would agree, but the outside-of-movie material helps to alleviate this problem.

I would rather watch the Holiday Special than any of the prequels. In fact I have thrown out my DVDs of the movies they’re so bad. I tried watching them again about a year ago thinking “they can’t be THAT bad”, but oh yes. They just get worse on every viewing. And that’s usually not a good quality in a movie. The DVDs went into the trash the next day.

The way I see it, there are now 5 Star Wars movies. Rogue One is the prequel, then you have Star Wars through The Force Awakens.

“If you look past how bad they are, they aren’t that bad.”

My thoughts exactly. Like “what?”. It’s like saying “If you ignore how bad it tastes, it actually doesn’t taste terrible.”

I can enjoy the prequels. The only parts that are unbearable are the romance scenes in AOTC.

The Jedi are all but extinct.......

I can enjoy the prequels with a large group to laugh at them with me. It’s been a few years since I’ve done that though. Last time I watched a prequel (AOTC, specifically) alone was in an attempt to bore myself to sleep, and I instead just became angrier as it went on, so I stopped about halfway.

Is this really a good idea??? From what I understand these kind of conversation is what started the whole trolling fiasco.

By the way he recently posted pictures of dead babies in one of the ‘‘random GIF and picture’’ forum.

They’re not terrible. I grew up with them, and have a hearty amount of nostalgia for each one. I recognise the numerous flaws, but I still enjoy watching them. Sometimes (briefly) I’ll watch one and try to convince myself that they are good, as I thought all throughout my childhood (actually, up until mid 2015)

For what it’s worth, I rate them like this:

The Phantom Menace - 5/10
Attack of the Clones - 4/10
Revenge of the Sith - 4/10

I prefer them all to The Clone Wars (2008 movie).

Not enough people read the EU.

Erm, methinks that trolling fiascos like that are brought on by personal anger and bitterness, not discussions of whether or not certain movies are bad. If it does cause a trolling fiasco, then the troll has to have already planned it in his mind (“mind” being a term I use lightly) and was just looking for any excuse.

Hardcore Legend, you succinctly managed to point out why the prequels suck. You can occasionally capture a silent, emotionless action shot that looks great for two or three seconds. The problem is, a GIF is not a movie.

The OT has moments like that too. But everything else the those movies are made of --like 99% of their entire running time-- is also enjoyable to watch.

I’ve always said that the biggest fault of the Prequels is that is doesn’t spend enough time on Obi-Wan and Anakin’s friendship: so you don’t care when it falls apart in Revenge.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

  • rigid blue screen cinematography

Yep. Like TFA and R1 by the way…

Lucas way of filming is rigid (it has always been; the guy is an editor, not a director), not the tools he developed. The “back to practical” trend of TFA/R1 is a marketing joke. Most of Disney’s new movies are CGI/blue-green screens filmmaking with a few props on set just for marketing purposes… And practical effects of the PT are great (Trade federation actors for example).

Didn’t you know? It doesn’t matter that TFA’s story sucks because of the effects they used.
But the Prequels don’t get that pass because of the effects they used.
Also, cool X-Wing’s 'n OT fan-service stuff. A+
The hypocrisy among Star Wars fans isn’t glaring at all.
