The unseen Star Wars archive footage used in Rogue One

“We went to Skywalker ranch, and there’s the archives there,” Edwards told RadioTimes.com.
“And as we’re walking around, and doing all the cool things and looking at the Millennium Falcon and trying on Han Solo’s jacket and things like that, in the back at the bottom was all these cans of film. And we said ‘what are they?’ and they said ‘Oh, it’s Star Wars.’

“And you go… ‘has someone gone through all this? And it’s like ‘not really, they’re not fully like digitised at all.’”
Sensing an opportunity, Edwards got his hands on the film negatives, and realised he had the perfect chance for a subtle homage in his hands.

“We got the neg documents and found the clips from A New Hope that hadn’t been used,” he recalled. “And there’s pilot photography and lines that were never featured in A New Hope."

Now that’s cool. And also a bit sad that they’re not “fully digitized.”

Wonder what cool stuff is on those reels…

I doubt this will be the case given the poor offering on the Force Awakens Blu-Ray. I did not bother to buy it I contemplated getting the later repackaged version with the supposed Chewie ripping off the arms if Unkar Plutt or whatever his name is but it was cut short just like they did for escaping Maz Katana’s castle.

The full scene is on the blu-ray. It was the promo material, prior to the 3d blu-ray’s release that had the scene cut before chewie rips his arm off.

Did anyone see this pilot? I don’t remember her… Was she in the film?

I don’t remember seeing her. The character is Zal Dinnes, Red Eight. When I go again, I’ll try to catch her. That’s just a card release so she may not be in the film.

Well, I can’t say that I remember this woman specifically, but I do remember there being a female X-Wing pilot in the battle over Scarif.

I love this movie more and more every time I see it! 😄 I really love how the Rebellion is in more of a gray area in this film with Rebel terrorists and all. The one thing that there could’ve been more of is the character of Moroff, the white haired creature.

I don’t really see why every character needs a backstory. When the whole point is to make a standalone movie where none of the characters will return in a sequel, the I don’t really see how backstory would be necessary unless directly related to the plot, e.g. Jyn’s relation to Galen.

I think RO can be fairly compared to movies like f.ex. John Carpenter’s The Thing in terms of how the characters are developed. What’s so brilliant about the writing of that film is that it never wastes any time explaining anyone’s backstory. All that we need to know about those characters are revealed to us through how they all cope with the same intense situation. There was never a “when I was a kid…” or “back home I was…” type of dialogue, all that we need to learn about their personalities comes from how they react to the crisis that is at the center film. That in my opinion is good economical writing. Granted, this method is not for every type of movie, but I think that this is the kind of story that RO tries to be. Which makes sense when you got a war movie focused on one specific threat and one specific important mission. RO isn’t really a “character film”, yet it still manages to explore several characters’ personalities and implied backgrounds based on how they behave throughout the story.

Also SW does have the benefit of having one of the most elaborate EUs in existence, so if you are just dying to know the life story of Chirrut or Bodhi, or any other character, I’m sure there’s going to be some novel or comic that will explore this at some point.

Well said.

It is funny how big a deal they made about the character and then it was in the movie for maybe five seconds?

I was relieved the Rocket Raccoon rip-off was barely in the movie, my wife didn’t even notice him. I would have liked more Moroff, however.

Don’t forget the whoopty-doo about C2-B5. He’s in the background of one shot for about two seconds. And yet got his own Sideshow and Funko Pop releases:

Background characters getting their own toys is hardly a new thing with Star Wars.

Yeah but the point is the big stink they made about him. He was the Constable Zuvio of Rogue One.

They really mined the early concepts for the OT in this movie. For example, Chirrut being connected to the Whills and saying “May the Force of Others be with you” as in the first draft of Star Wars. I had no idea we’d be seeing Vader’s lava castle from the first draft of TESB either.

Also, is it just me or did the melody for Jyn’s theme remind anyone else of the Star Crash main title?

What I think is Jyn’s theme reminds me of Giacchino’s Trek theme (I’m not totally sure yet which theme is which on the R1 OST apart from the guardians of the Whills). It’s got some VERY similar chord changes.

Reminds me of the fuss over this gal.

Then she doesn’t even appear in Episode II or III. She did finally appear in The Clone Wars though.

She was kind of awesome in TCW too. Wouldn’t mind seeing her on Rebels.

Well there’s Jyn’s theme and then there’s what I’ve been calling the Rogue One theme but I guess they’re actually calling the “Hope” theme. Both have similar sounds to Giacchino’s Trek theme I guess but neither reminds me particularly of much of it.

Here’s both (Jyn’s theme for most of it, with the Hope theme starts at around 3:17):

Jyn’s theme actually has some similarities to the Yorktown theme from STBeyond (at 1:45):

While the Hope theme sounds more like a SW main title fake out with the same first two notes and then going in a different direction.

Well here it is:

And god you’re right, sounds just like the Hope theme! Amazing! Long live Star Crash.
(I guess it’s full circle as both themes are designed as SW main title knock-off/homages)
