4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 96

The shots used were not from the original film they were Outtakes or deleted scenes.

Gareth Edwards got Access to them apparently a couple of reels?

He’s probably seen the shot where the Tie fighter pilot get’s blown up in cockpit now…

it would be in those reels probably. I’d love to see the deleted material what ever it was.

The unseen Star Wars archive footage used in Rogue One

“We went to Skywalker ranch, and there’s the archives there,” Edwards told RadioTimes.com.
“And as we’re walking around, and doing all the cool things and looking at the Millennium Falcon and trying on Han Solo’s jacket and things like that, in the back at the bottom was all these cans of film. And we said ‘what are they?’ and they said ‘Oh, it’s Star Wars.’

“And you go… ‘has someone gone through all this? And it’s like ‘not really, they’re not fully like digitised at all.’”
Sensing an opportunity, Edwards got his hands on the film negatives, and realised he had the perfect chance for a subtle homage in his hands.

“We got the neg documents and found the clips from A New Hope that hadn’t been used,” he recalled.

God, I so desperately want to see Rogue One. Damn my lack of money and convenience.

I guess I’ll just have to settle for Rogue One on Netflix or Blu-ray, whichever comes first.

And the BD better not be too costly.

Friend of mine says the R1 cinematographer mentions seeing a 4K DCP of ANH in this interview:

I have a theory about this, but it contains spoilers

If that is so, then there is a delicious irony in then making a movie about a rebel in the guise of an Imperial running away with a hard drive full of the Empire’s most valuable data.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Isn’t that story from Edwards a bad sign?

I mean, it seems to confirm that no one is working on a theatrical restoration.

Author

Yes, Edwards finding a can of unused takes in the archives would be completely separate from the original negatives used in a restoration.

They are releasing the Unaltered. I know if they don’t then It would show how much they don’t care but they know about how much money they will make

I’m certain we’ll get something for the 40th anniversary. They won’t let such an occasion go unacknowledged. And with all the 4K UHD discs coming out lately, they’ll have to put that out eventually too so it’s perfect timing. I would bet money that the OUT will be released, simply because they know damn well the fans will not be pleased if they try to put out just the SE yet again without George even involved. And because sites like this are cutting into Disney’s profits; yes, I know it’s a niche site and yes, I know we’re supposed to own the Blu-ray, but major publications have written about it and there’s no doubt plenty of people who download Despecialized without paying Disney a cent. They’ll want to rectify that just like the GOUT put a stop to laserdisc bootlegs.

Unfortunately we’re probably stuck with the SE forever though, even if it comes with the OUT, simply because the SE will have been the standard in one form or another for literally exactly as long as the original was. That means a generation or two grew up on it. For their sake, it would be nice if they also restored the 97 SE. Which might be easier; if it is true that the negatives are the 97 SE, it should be no problem whatsoever to throw that initial scan on as a bonus even if they alter it to the 2011 version for the standard release.

My ideal would be for them to hybrid it all together with branching: Scan the 97 negative and use it as the base, “despecialize” it for the OUT and “respecialize” it for the 2011 SE. Then stick it all on one disc and allow viewers to seamlessly select which version to watch, using the same footage for everything except for where scenes differ. This assumes of course that they get the colors and everything down perfectly for all versions, which would be pretty sweet. And since both the colors and audio of the 97 SE are unanimously praised around here, I don’t think people could complain too much if it was used as the base everything else was built around.

I’m trying not to get my hopes up, you still have to deal with Fox who is ok with kissing Lucas’ ass. They might block it on the grounds of not wanting to go against his wishes.

My nephew will be 2 this January. I would love for him to see a nice version of the Original Trilogy when he is old enough. I already jokingly threatened to call CPS if he’s shown the Prequels or the SEs.

For all we know it could be Disney who’s holding out. The rights to Empire, Jedi and the prequels revert entirely to LFL in 2020. Disney might be waiting until then so they can maximize their profits on those movies rather than share them with Fox right now.

My best friend’s daughter will be 2 in March, so I was thinking along the same lines as you. I know that the OT (2011 blu-rays) were some of the first things they “watched” together, but I would certainly hope the-powers-that-be do these films justice by the time she’s actually old enough to remember watching them for the first time.

The OUT is the carrot Disney is using to keep us buying their products. It definitely won’t be released next year because it’s what fans want. Keeping the audience hanging is exactly what they want to do. Otherwise why go see Episode 8-9 & Han Solo?

All signs point to 2020.

The ST will have concluded and Ep9 will have been released on home media.

Disney will finally control all rights to the first six films with the exception of ANH.

The new 4K Ultra HD format will have matured, giving Lucasfilm an excuse to dip yet again on these movies.

We know there’s been a 4k remaster of the OT, so that might very well become the basis for the next release.

In the meantime, I’m done getting my hopes up. If there’s a surprise out-of-nowhere announcement that we’re getting it next Fall ahead of Ep8, so much the better, but I highly doubt it. We would’ve heard something by now.

I think we get an OOT blu-ray next year for the anniversary, and then a UHD release in 2020 when Disney gets the rights to V and VI and the ST is finished. I can’t imagine them releasing nothing for the 40th, and there’s no way they can get away with just giving the 2011 SE new packaging again. I suppose it’s possible we get a new master of the SE (which I’d grudgingly accept just to get rid of the awful current version), but that doesn’t seem big enough to me. I’m not going to be gutted if it doesn’t happen given some of the amazing 35mm based projects over in the preservations section we have to look forward to, but I’m still cautiously optimistic. Now that Rogue One is out in the wild, though, I think if we don’t hear anything in a month or two that will be that for 2017. For the past few months I’ve figured they wouldn’t announce anything during the promotion of the new film so as not to confuse the situation, but now that that’s over I expect something soon or not at all.

Rogue One will probably be on blu-ray in April. Releasing Star Wars in a 40th Anniversary edition in May would be great cross promotion. You have the film that Rogue One leads to. You have the original version, not seen in years and you can stick a trailer for Episode 8 on it to add to the excitement. It would be a win.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

I know we’d all love it to street in time for the anniversary on May 25th, but if anything they would wait until September/October as they have in the past.

That’s why I’m not completely ruling out the possibility of a surprise 2017 OOT release just yet.

Not to drudge this back up again, but there was a rumor going around last year that someone at LFL (“unnamed source”) had seen a new version of the SE where Han still shoots first. It ended up not being the digital versions, but the report still stands.

Considering fans have more gripes with that scene than probably any other change, it wouldn’t totally surprise me if George relented and changed it back.

My guess is that it’s the SE, and that if something is happening, it will be announced in May

Unfortunately I think you’ll be right about it being the SE. I believe that all iterations of the SE are counterfeit versions of the OT. George Lucas is a sociopath with a double digit IQ who cruelly took away our movies, and now Disney is tragically respecting his wishes.
