Either way this is the first theatrical live action EU movie. So there.

Caravan was released theatrically in Europe.

Well… the less said about those the better. I think technically E.T. was also more or less canon via some now Legends stuff.

“Legends stuff”?

The E.T. aliens are still visible in TPM.

Star Wars is Surrealism, not Science Fiction (essay)

I must be blind not noticing how Whitaker changed between the first two teasers.

I actually would have preferred him that way. And now that I think of it, his character didn’t have anything to do in the movie really.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

He was bald in the prologue, which I’m assuming the teaser shots were from.

Good point, LOL.

To those of you lucky few who live near a 70mm Imax location and were able to see it that way, I am peanut butter and jealous.

No, you didn’t miss anything except the Dunkirk preview, which was terrific. Blowing Alexa 65 (6K) up to IMAX looks surprisingly bad, especially when compared to TFA’s 35m, or strikingly, 35 and 65mm segments in a Christopher Nolan film.
The blacks were grey, the colour was very subdued and quite muddy at times, and there was a heavy amount of digital grain. It seems like blockbusters are embracing celluloid releasing in a big way, which is good, but they need to realise that if they do, their first priority must be to shoot on film.

He sent the hero on their journey. His fate pushed the hero forward.

He added some new world-building as well. It was interesting to see some more extreme rebels in an actual SW movie.

Considering how much TFA was praised, it’s predictable.

Yeah I just saw it and I’d agree with that. The audience seemed to just love K-2SO. Plus, K-2SO did sacrifice himself for the mission, so I guess that’s a good point.

But beyond that? It seems that since they knew this film was not going anywhere except directly to ANH so they didn’t bother with any character development. I take back everything bad I ever said about Hayden Christensen, Felicity Jones is now the worst lead-actor in a Star Wars film. She’s not even an actual rebel - why not give us the Kyle Reese of the rebellion instead of some outsider that has a sudden epiphany? Come to think of it, it would have helped if Diego Luna was a lot more like Michael Biehn in Terminator.

I thought she was great! She wasn’t necessarily fighting FOR the rebellion, but was doing it for her father.

What’s the name of the planet where Krennic visits Vader? Was that supposed to be Mustafar or somewhere else?

That was Mustafar. Paublo Hidalgo said as much on twitter… well he didn’t as much say it outright but he did allude to it from a line in the rebels season 1 finale which did take place on mustafar.

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

It’s like War and Remembrance in space! In all seriousness though… this film is definitely more hard-hitting than the other Star Wars films… by the end, everybody’s dead, and two planets have been nuked. By the Death Star no less! Its lowest setting is equal to that of a million A-bombs! And that’s saying something!
That said, I loved how they brought back Angus Macinnes, James Earl Jones, and especially Peter Cushing for this one.

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

Vader won’t set foot on Tatooine, but he’ll buy a summer home on the planet where he almost burned to death? 😉

Just thinking, this is the fourth Star Wars prequel and the first that doesn’t manage to totally fuck up any aspect of the continuity.

I noticed one thing that messed a bit with the continuity for me; what happened to Vader? How did he go from throwing people up into ceilings and cutting them in half to the “old men hitting each other with sticks” that we saw in A New Hope. I was never one of those idiots that hated their fight because it was “boring” or there weren’t enough flips, but it does seem a little out-of-character now that we have precedent for Vader being a badass only days before.

I didn’t like the speed they gave to Darth Vader in this movie either; I’d rather not have him show such acrobatics with the lightsaber. That being said, what I did like of it are the implications that speed has, which is that on the Imperial side of things, only Vader and Tarkin fully understand how fucked the Empire is if they loose those plans.

What I mean is that we didn’t see a raging Darth Vader, but a desperate, rushed Vader. And that I did like because it implies that he’s not only the most dangerous, but the most lucid within the Empire as well.

Obi Wan in ANH, instead, is something far more personal and has, not until he finds out about Luke, no implications in the grand scheme of politics of the galaxy. That, on one hand. And on the other, I like the explanations that go around the web, that in the end Vader fears Obi Wan for what he’s done to him and so approaches him in a rather conservative way.

Continuity is way overrated when getting into that level of detail. Of all the major flaws that made the PT a disgrace in my opinion, continuity is the least of its concerns.

But what do i know? I think films that rely on plot twist surprises are only worth watching once so i think spoliers are overrated.

Palpatine’s pit bull is kept firmly in the hate zone…

Just come out from seeing it and I have to say I very much enjoyed it… It is a major rebound back to something that at least means something and does have feeling to it. I felt something from watching the film and reacted a few times to things that happen.

Small gripe Vader does not sound right they have left too many high frequencies in JEJ voice I feel. Right at the end I felt it started to get a bit over sentimental but it was ok.

Basically my Rating for this film is a solid and entertainment 8.5/10
