I also saw a screening of the film last year after getting the spoRV release and thought the film’s colors were more blue. On my calibrated TV, the spoRV is actually a bit too red in some spots in the snow. I am waiting for the new BD to arrive, so I can’t comment on how it compares to the film screening that I attended.

Please let us know what you think after you’ve watched the new one.

I’ve spotted the new Scream Factory BD and colors are way better than the previous; seems there is a bit too blue, but if I have to choose between this and other previous releases, this is the only choice.

spoRv’s red: I haven’t noted pink snow, but, as it was my firt color regrading attempt, it could be possible; IF there will be another, I’ll take care to do everything as best as possible.

I agree with you in that I think this new release really is superb. The snow is way whiter than the previously blue (even if it is a little blue at times).

Frankly, when you see it in a direct comparison, you will find that snow is waaay bluer than what one could imagine… well, I made a dirty new regrade, just take a look and let me know:

Scream BD Vs spoRv 1.0

Scream BD Vs Scream regraded

spoRv 1.0 Vs Scream regraded

Some notes: Scream BD quality is really better than the old master used in the HD-DVD and BD; colors are improved also a lot, and they are consistent (remember that shot where snow starts pink, then became white, finally blue?); still, too much blue for my taste - of course, if you watch the whole movie, you will not notice it a lot, because eyes (brain) will be slowly think the colors are right, but I do not think so… finally, a spoRv 2.0 using the Scream BD as source could still be an interesting project!

but the person who made the scream transfer color grade seemed to always have a thing for blue color timing so the scream color grade might be right

Maybe he is right, but when I see almost lilac end credits instead white(ish) ones, I have some doubts…

Hmm, that regrade does look nice. I guess, in my head, I always kind of picture snow to be a bit blue, rather than pure white. However, the colors on the jackets/pants of the characters definitely prove me wrong in that regard; they are super blue on the Scream BD. Any chance you’re pursuing a complete regrade of the Scream? The detail in the Scream BD is awesome.

I watched this last night after the discs arrived. The snow scenes has red spots similar to spoRV. It’s obviously something to do with my display. During a white wipe, the screen was white without any red. There must be some hue coming through on the snow scenes. My TV is calibrated with the same settings as a certified technician’s review of the same model. I’m guessing each set is a little off from each other. (And I thought this problem was solved over 10 years ago.)

I don’t remember if the night scene colors were quite that blue – probably not. I only distinctly remembered the snow colors on film as I watched spoRV version the night prior to the screening and worried if they appeared on film. The saucer in the ice at the Norwegian site looked realistically like glaciers.

What else… the new BD has a frame or so at the end of the dog imitation autopsy being out of focus. I don’t remember that before. There were a few other frames like that later in the film.

I still haven’t watched any of the special features besides the trailers. I’m very pleased that they finally included the teaser in HD, which was never released on DVD besides in France. Really curious if the TV cut is better quality than what I already have. Overall, it’s a great version with all the improved details.

The TV cut honestly looks pretty rough, but I imagine that’s as good as it will ever look.

I watched the TV cut and it’s different than the mkv that I saw. The mkv has a channel logo throughout and audio on one channel. I only watched the beginning of it as I got bogged down on doing A/B comparison with the movie cut before writing down the minute differences with time codes. I’ll have to watch it again and see if it’s the same cut as provided on the BD extras.

Regarding the broadcast TV cut on the BD set, that’s probably the version I saw on a major TV channel. I’m guessing Universal probably has broadcast quality tape somewhere, but probably due to budgetary reasons it was not used and we got a VHS recording instead.

Revised version is near completion… if someone is still interested, as Arrow would release another version in the next months… who knows, maybe it will have the right color grading?!?

Greetings, Andrea! … Glad to hear you’re still working on these classics. The Thing will always have people interested… lots of Carpenter fans around here. Hell, I wouldn’t mind a Halloween version 2 down the road either… maybe even with the television scenes added back in for a super edition! Your Escape From New York (HDNet Movies) project is still my go to edition cuz it’s Awesome… The Best Ever!! You da man!

The mkv source is from me. i recorded on TBS in the early 2000’s. It was broadcast in mono, but i didnt realize that the encode i did moved the mono sound to one channel. Nothing is absent in the sound you are hearing, its just all moved to one channel.

Correct. I watched both TV sources (Echo3’s and the BD extra). Both version feature the same cut. Quality between the two are very similar. The biggest difference is the BD extra does not have the TBS logo.

Just to let you know how it is the final result: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/201928

Hope you will like it!

Having recently watched the Shout Factory release, it’s hard to believe it’s actually so blue! Your version looks awesome!

Thanks Colson!

Final encoding is almost finished, I hope to put it in the usual place in the next few hours.

And I added some little surprised, hope someone would appreciate them… stay tuned!

So, was this a shot by shot correction, or was it doable in a single pass? (I’m assuming the former.)

I just watched your new version of The Thing last night and good god damn it is easily the best version out there. Thank you so, so much for this release.
