Wow that really sucks. Been there with those seagate drives man. Can’t tell you how many times (even just on this forum, yet alone real life) I’ve had to start a project over because one of those drives died on me.

I just watched the ESB Grindhouse the other night, and it’s still immensely enjoyable despite many color issues (most of which calm down after reel 3). Way more watchable than any other version that exists at the moment, at least for me.

Great work so far on this 4K77 project Williarob. It looks fantastic!

Let’s hope so! I just went back to the drive with the original ESB scan on it and it just died. One minute it was readable and I was checking out the scans, the next it’s making some mechanical grinding noises and, well that’s that. Can’t run any diagnostics on it because it no longer shows up as a connected drive (tried multiple ways). Probably the control arm is stuck. I doubt you’ll be surprised to learn that it was a cheap Seagate drive. Also on there was the original LPP scan, but I had backups of that. I didn’t have backups of the ESB files (though other people do). So, I guess I won’t be testing out Dre’s tools on that scan any time soon. It might not matter though. I don’t actually know which scan was used for the Grindhouse version so it might well have been this one.

One suggestion that can help a bit (though I don’t think it would work long enough to get that amount of data off) is to stick the drive in a freezer for a while. That’ll often bring it back to life for a short while, but generally only good for one shot (doesn’t work over and over). Generally best for generating a list of contents of the drive, so you know exactly what you’re missing. Again, probably won’t do much good in your case, but it is a surprisingly little known trick that’s worth repeating.

Freezing the drive sounds like a bad idea to me:

I already tried switching the controller card on the back of the drive with another Seagate 3 TB drive, made around the same time, but that didn’t help, and I opened it up and confirmed that the platters are clear and the heads are not stuck, so short of spending hundreds and hundreds of $$ to recover data that other members of TN1 should still have somwehere I think that’s all I can do. Another Seagate Drive will RIP.

I did not realize you would be hardware savvy enough to swap out boards and had a clean enough space in which to open a drive. Freezing is kind of a last ditch effort for those not willing/capable to find the root hardware problem (and yes, it is bad for the drive).

Actually I was planning to work on Jedi in 4K before this project, but I’m still waiting on the scans. Figured I’d make a start on this while I wait. Jedi should be a relatively quick project because we have several good scans and much of it is very very clean. If those scans arrive before I finish this project, I’ll probably work on Jedi and knock that out first, then come back to this later.

Empire on the other hand will require considerably more work. Perhaps Poita or somebody has a better print, but I don’t have access to any great scans of Empire at the moment.

If Jedi becomes a quicker if not easier project to tackle, I welcome the idea of having it done before Star Wars. I don’t think order is that big of a deal for restoration projects (correct me if the majority thinks otherwise). Jedi then Star Wars then Empire would be a good idea, working from the cleanest and most alleviated work brought on by the times, to the dirtiest and most time consuming of them.

I also PM’d you Williarob

Here is an alternative color grading:

I preferred the previous one. Skin tones were better, and the walls had the right color of mint. Plus I thought it added the nice purple blue to R2.

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

DrDre, would you mind compiling the corrections you’ve done so far as a screenshotcomparison? So it would be easier to see the different iterations from the source until this current one? Just a suggestion

This looks kind of “crushed”. Hope you know what I mean, there is almost no detail in the bright areas (walls) and dark areas

Agreed… Dr. Dre you had it, SPOT ON, careful not to keep searching for the holy grail when you’ve already found it. 😃

Just discovered this today. Amazing. Haven’t read the thread yet so forgive me if it’s been said, but I really hope ESB and ROTJ are planned to get similar treatment too! There’s been so many outright amazing projects on the original film in recent years sometimes it feels like the sequels are almost forgotten.

Nevertheless, GREAT JOB!!! Can’t wait to see the finished project. I really need a raise so I can start upgrading my equipment to both get and watch all this new stuff! I still have to trek over to a friends house just to burn a single layer BD…

I could be wrong, but I think Poita is the next port of call for a good ESB restoration. He’s already got some terrific tests up on his own thread.

Well that really is too bad. Turns out the one that failed on me was also a Seagate. Still bugs me!

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

Thing i noticed about the tantive scene is the inside isn’t white in most edits it’s either blue, bluish gray, pink, red or off white Why isn’t it white in any of these color corrections or am i seeing things wrong?

Ladies and gentlemen, here’s what I think will be the final grading or the opening shots of the film. I’ve reduced the contrast somewhat, and one or two shots will require some tweaking to remove some pink staining, but I’m very pleased with the result. It’s got a Japanese Special Collection vibe. Rather than show a few frames, I color corrected the entire video sample Williarob posted. Here’s a 720p downscale, that should give you a good idea how it will look in motion:

It does indeed have a slight Pink, or Lavender hue to it.

Which correction setting is this? Looks more like that last alternative one and I’m not really liking the vibe.

3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan

I can’t believe i’m throwing this out there only because it’s so recent the color of the tataive in revenge of the sith scene where obi wan, yoda and bail organa. I could be wrong but that seems to be the right color. I don’t know if it possible to get it to look like that considering how old a new hope is but there you go.

THIS!

DrDre, the video sample you posted is not nearly as good looking as those previous screenshots. The “final grading” feels way too orange/pink overall, and removes the slight mint-green feel that I think is almost essential.
