Haven't weighed in yet.

My position is he was too good of a player to not be in the hall.  Just put him in with a plaque that acknowledges his gambling.

vote_for_palpatine, could you please explain why you prefer Bonds over Rose?  I don't understand that.   Bonds could have affected the outcome games just as you say Rose could have.  How is what Bonds did any better than what Rose may have done?

If you want to keep them all out of the hall ok.   But the fact is Pete Rose was given a lifetime ban from the game and the juicers weren't and probably won't be.  How can that possibly be fair?

Again, just so we're clear, I don't want Bonds in. But when he takes steroids to improve himself, at least that helps his team. If you are going to cheat, do it in a way that helps your team. Having a guy hitting baseballs like it's a video game helps the team. I don't think what Rose did as manager helped his team in any way.

As to the second question, gambling is a 100+ year problem in the sport. Steroid use has been around for only about 30-40 years and was a widespread problem for only about 20 years. Gambling was never condoned by MLB, whereas steroid use was, at best, ignored until 2003-2004. It would be mighty hypocritical of baseball to sock a lifetime ban on guys they looked the other way on during their playing careers.

But I wouldn't be bothered if proven steroid cheats were banned for life.

If Pete Rose wants his lifetime ban removed, he could start by going on speaking tours talking about the evils of gambling. But it seems his position, then and now, has always been that gambling is no big deal. Ask Michael Franzese what a big deal gambling is.

Why would the fact that what Bonds did helped his team make what he did any less wrong.    Yeah, MLB ignored it which they shouldn't have done.   But the drugs were still illegal.    That should have given the players some clue that what they were doing was wrong.

Man, I've got spring training fever, bad. Winter has me down. I've started listening to (even more) baseball talk, reading baseball articles, I've printed out the Spring Training schedule, I downloaded the Outlook regular season 2010 schedule for my email, and I even bought a Spring Training t-shirt. Dammit - come on March. I hate the off-season.

I'm the opposite.  My sports calendar is always full, as I'm a complete junkie:

Jan - NFL, College B-ball

Feb - College B-ball

Mar - College B-ball, but starting to think about MLB

Apr thru June - MLB, with some NBA and NHL thrown in

July and Aug - Nothing but MLB

Sept and Oct - MLB and NFL

Nov and Dec - NFL

I love that there's always something going on I'm interested in.  My wife hates it.

I'm trying to put together a Fantasy Baseball League of OT.com members.  There are several people already signed up who have no fantasy experience, so don't be afraid to give this a try if you've never done it before.  This is for fun only - no money involved.

Any of you guys in this thread still check it from time to time?

How about it skyjedi?  Sluggo?  bkev?  ricardo?  DAYV?  We still need two or three more people at a minimum for the fantasy league.

I'm tempted to post a link at baseball-fever.com, but then there might be a huge wave of players.

Well, let's wait and see if we can drum up any more interest here or at FE.org first.  Anchorhead expressed interest but I haven't heard back from him yet.

So Frink, I take it that for game 6, Billy Goats will get in for free and Bartman is banned, right?

Author

That is not the Bartman I was referring to.

A wonderful baseball book I recommend is “Watching Baseball Smarter” by Zack Hample. During that magical and tortuous SF Giants 2010 season, I had that book by my side almost every time I was watching a game.

Oh, and Fuck The Dodgers. I hope the Cubbies slaughter those dirty bluebirds tonight.

Don’t do drugs, unless you’re with me.

I haven’t cared about baseball in a long time, but as someone who grew up getting the chance to see the Red Sox break their curse, I sympathize and am rooting for the Cubs to finally do the same.

I’d like to pretend it is either 8 or 36 years ago.
