kk650's Regraded Blade Runner 2049 (2017) (blanket yellow tint removed from blu-ray)
Time

I saw BR 2049 in IMAX 3D, 4DX, Auro 3D and standard 2D formats in the theaters (in that order). None of the versions had the cold look suggested here. There were 2 drastic differences though - IMAX 3D version had very desaturated look (with yellowish look present) and standard 2D had very saturated look (still yellowish though). Other versions were somewhere inbetween, more on the desaturated side.

2D Blu-ray edition reflects saturated 2D look and I can’t comment on 3D Blu-ray since I don’t own it. In my opinion saturated look of 2D versions doesn’t match the film’s atmosphere at all and I was shocked to see it in 2D. I guess saturated is the intended BR 2049 look - desaturation probably occurs due to projector’s 3D lenses which are known to desaturate the image.

So if color correction is someone’s goal here, desaturation is the way to go. What I’d like to see is IMAX full screen aspect ratio which immensely added to immersion.

The Abyss - Special Edition (1989) BluRay Project - see Page 2 (Released)
Time

Does anyone here have the original 1989 Electronic Press Kit for The Abyss (it was included on the fan archival BD this thread is dedicated to, but can’t find anywhere)? I’m also looking for OOP documentary Rubber Rules: Back Into The Abyss (2009) special 2 disc DVD by Eon productions and any other unreleased behind the scenes clips. Please post any info here or send me a private message. Thanks!

In which case it really isn’t accurate (or polite) to call it an Alien Appendix team release.

Don’t get me wrong - your efforts to pull this stuff together should be encouraged (goodness knows I don’t have the time any more myself). But to claim those names without even mentioning your plans to one of the original team members (meedermow, klokwerk, triffid or me) isn’t really on - it’s not as if we were hard to find.

Hi. It was just my thank you to the Appendix team whose releases I’ve enjoyed. No problem guys. Torrent is taken down.

Interesting - were any of the other original team members contacted/involved in this? It’s certainly news to me.

The project was announced 2 months ago but sadly no one else was involved. A few members got in touch with me but they had no new relevant materials to contribute with. I didn’t want the project linger indefinitely so I wrapped it up. It didn’t seem to be much interest in it anyways, even on 30th anniversary. Sadly Ash595 couldn’t be reached to make yet another great artwork (can someone get in touch with him privately?).

Alien/Aliens Color Regrade (a WIP)
Time

Thanks for great links to re-coloring. The color regraded versions are interesting experiments to watch but they should be an extra feature, not the one and only version on the market. The same goes for the original theatrical audio mix, not to mention foreign dubs. I fail to see what’s the problem of including both versions to satisfy both original and contemporary audience.

I’m glad to have Aliens THX LD that matches 70mm and I’m also glad to Have Japanese Matrix DVD with original color and uncut version (they’ve cut down the number of blows Smith gives to Neo and Morpheus). Matrix regrade at least makes sense in the grand scheme of green matrix code.

Alien Appendix 8: The Alien Saga Archive (Released)
Time

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Aliens I decided to continue the wonderful Alien Appendix series. I collected enough promos (some vintage but mostly recent) to make a decent extras disc (which can’t be said of the latest blu-ray).

I’m looking for someone to design the artwork and contributors with additional promos from their archives. Since the new documentary THE INSPIRATION AND DESIGN OF ALIENS (29:37) from 30th anniversary blu-ray is available as online extra only (many can’t get it to play and the studio can take it offline whenever they want), I’d like to include it for preservation as well. Please send me a private message if you can provide it.

Alien/Aliens Color Regrade (a WIP)
Time

JayArgonaut it’s hard to get into mind of James Cameron. At different times and on different formats he seems to prefer a different color scale. BD looks amazing but there is too much blue/orange complementary color there for my taste (but again that was a popular choice in the 80s even though he chose it in 00s). I have Aliens on pretty much all formats and DVD color is pretty much close to what I get used to the most. The best option would be to have “original” (whichever it is) color version and optional new color regrade as an option on blu-ray.

Whoa! Nice find!

Could this mean that the first release (VHS only?) was definitely Cameron’s only “original vision” color-correction (as opposed to more, later revised, color-corrections)? It also begs the question … did any of those 1st, wrong VHS’s leak out into the market?

There is another great article from 1996 issue of ‘Widescreen Review’ on the subject of Aliens grain and color correction (JC forcing calibration on his own personal TV set). From all I’ve read on the subject so far it seems to me that we should be pretty happy with Blu-ray version. No one really remembers the quality of 35mm prints at the time of release and I doubt they were all the same. It’s like remembering how good VHS was until the DVD came along.

Has anyone bought the new 30th BD yet? How is it?

The only worthy thing about it is a new half hour documentary/featurette THE INSPIRATION AND DESIGN OF ALIENS. Which can be watched ONLY online and only 10 times (!?). The problem is almost no one can access it for some reason.

I urge anyone here who can actually access the documentary, to download it and put it on DVD before it’s gone for good. Kindly sharing it is greatly appreciated. Fox can delete it whenever it wants. Welcome to the world of digital home video.

An interesting comment on Aliens color correction…

Anne Hurd: It’s a funny thing. Back then, Jim didn’t have color correction in his contract. When the first VHS [of Aliens] was made, the color timer decided it should be warm! We had dinner with [Rupert] Murdoch and they deep-sixed 250,000 VHS copies so Jim could color correct it.
