The Force Awakens : Fan Edit Ideas
Time

That’s actually an excellent idea.

I’d also consider deleting the Hosnian destruction entirely. It isn’t important for the plot (as far as I can remember) and the fact it can be seen from Takodana as well as the overall poor visuals of the destruction (it was made to look like the planets were all orbiting each other) really damaged my enjoyment of the movie.

Other elements of the movie that folks are unhappy about bothered me a lot less than this.

Project Threepio (Star Wars OOT subtitles)
Time

CatBus, it’s been a long time since I first downloaded Project Threepio, but as someone living in a non-English-speaking part of the world I really want to thank you for creating and sharing this project. Thanks to the availability of these subs, I’ve been able to share the DeSpecialized Editions of Star Wars with many, MANY people here, and that brings me a great deal of joy.

I’ve been backing up my laptop lately and accidentally lost a few files in the transfer (kept the SRT files but lost the full packages) so I need to grab the torrent again, but once I’ve got it I’ll be seeding it again for as long as I can.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

The fact that you could see SKB’s shot from Takodana bugs me. It shouldn’t, Because Science Fantasy, but it does. It bugs me in a fundamentally wrong way, and is among my chief complaints about the movie. Sound in space I can dismiss, it’s an ‘audible sharpness’ thing. But the Starkiller beam left my brain hurting, to the point where I thought, initially, that Takodana and Hosnian Prime were in the same star system.

File under “how do magnets work?”. Thanks for sharing this image. Very interesting…

Thank the maker someone else feels the same as I do. It is indeed my CHIEF complaint about the movie. Everyone else is complaining about stuff that CAN be explained away, while this is the one thing that cannot. Nearly a week after I saw the movie it’s still bothering me above all else, to the point where I can’t decide if I really like the movie or not. I pray that a talented editor will be able to chop the scene up in a way that makes it sensibly viewable.

** My math is probably wrong.

But it's a good try.
Each star in this cubic evenly distributed space is adjacent to six stars at a range of 0.7 light years, but it's also adjacent to six stars at (0.7^2+0.7^2)^1/2 ly (the diagonals on the faces of the cube) and a further EIGHT stars at [(0.7^2)x3]^1/2 ly (the "internal diagonals" of the cube). This gives a mean average of 0.994 light years between stars, which I find to be an unintuitive and surprising result given the size of a parsec (3.26 light years).

I happen to think that Sky Captain was another film with great CGI. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of that entire film - especially the lighting on the characters. I really should go and buy it sometime soon.

Alternate Endings For The Trilogy....
Time
Millions of tons of molten metal from the second death star rain down on the forest moon of Endor, obliterating the rebels in orbit, their party on the ground, and all of the ewoks. Nuclear winter ensues, and the sterilized rock never becomes habitable again, although some salvage collectors are able to eke out a living over the coming centuries of lawlessness picking through the contaminated rubble. The new republic fails to materialize, and the empire fragments into hundreds of sectors ruled over by greedy and ruthless warlords.

This is exactly what is baffling me.

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
You know, seamless branching and double layer discs shouldn't even make this an issue.

There should be two versions of the crawl, two or three soundtracks, and that's it. It would represent the evolution of the theatrical release of Star Wars into the Faces Edition of A New Hope prior to the release of the Special Editions. The changes for the other two movies would be handled in the same way, with little or no fuss.

Wouldn't that make everyone happy?

Giorgio Moroder's Metropolis (Released)
Time

OCP’s post on revisionist silent films got me to thinking about this particular movie. Out of all the Metropolis versions out there, this may be my favorite. Perhaps because of my age when I first saw it, but mostly because the music and the image flow together in what can only be described as an extended length 80s rock music video. To date, it still hasn’t seen a DVD release, and most probably won’t either. I was wondering if anyone had taken the time to transfer a laserdisc source to DVD

Seamless branching O-OT and SE disc

I'm all for their removal. That's what the (goddamn) special editions should have been in the first place. When I first went to those 1997 screenings I thought I was going to be getting the ultimate "cleaned up" Star Wars (no garbage mattes, no lousy jump cuts, corrected lightsabers) with some cool deleted scenes added back in.

What we got was Lucas's scratch pad for the prequels. Spastic stormtroopers scouring the sands, a cartoon Jabba that's just a rough draft for Jar-Jar "I stepped in shit" Binks, and Greedo getting off a shot at Han (yes, we booed in the theater too) along with a ton of other random and utterly pointless alterations.

Steve

PS. Actually ADM, the more I think about it the angrier I get. I've finally had a chance (just this week!) to sit down and watch your Episode III and I feel more betrayed by Lucas than I have since the release of Episode II. (Great edit btw, it was awesome to see the Mon Mothma scenes in the flick. Not too keen on Qui-Gonn's speech to Yoda though).

Being able to insert that theme in the first movie will create a much stronger emotional flow throughout the Saga.
...
After the release of Episode III George will enhance the original trilogy with additional scenes and special effects, adding my adjustments to the score this will seamlesly branch the entire Star Wars Saga into one massive romantic space opera. I think something of this magnitude has never been done before.

Am I the only one who's completely unthrilled by this? I actually don't think the Imperial March belongs in ANH and I don't think it's anywhere close to being the best music in the OT.
