So some good news on the UHD BD authoring front! DVDFab just released their UHD BD authoring tool. It can handled HDR10 and Dolby Vision. I’m going to give it a try. However, like other DVDFab authoring tools, it has no menu authoring tools.

It’s $40 for a license and it can author to BD-25’s, BD-50’s, and BD-100’s (BD-66’s are probably an anomaly to account for since they aren’t an even multiplier).

The free community sourced TS2UHD is making some progress but it’s still very pre-alpha at the moment only being successful with certain players and TV’s. It will get somewhere eventually I hope.

Ok just played around with the trial. It does have menu creation (not available in the trial mode) and it’s all templates so it’ll suck haha. Adobe, why do you stop updating encore…

4K Blu-ray vs. Blu-ray Differences
Time

UHD BD’s can be 50 to over 100 GBs in capacity. Also can be triple or quadruple layer discs.

Looking at my uncompressed mkv rip of Independence Day 4K, it’s at 42.4 GB.

Bitrates can be nearly 100mpbs. Editing 4K videos takes a lot of power. If I have to edit in 4K I use a mix of NLEs like Davinci and After Effects.

As far as authoring 4K Blu-ray at the moment, well you better be rich. There is no consumer level software available. There is a tsmuxing variant (I can’t remember the name) that is attempting this but has severe limitations as it only works with BD50 discs and does not retain HDR metadata and can only mux streams and no menus and it’s also at a bitrate of around 30mpbs.

It’s still early on in UHD BD’s life.

As far as rig specs go for editing, yeah you’ll want at minimum 8 cores and 32GB of RAM as well as at least an NVidia GTX 1060 to help edit.

Disney had nothing to do with the OT. You should remove their logo from the disc me-think. And using an image from TFA for a OT box set is quite curious as well.

I put Disney on their because they own all of it now. But I’ll pull the logo anyways because yeah it just doesn’t fit or flow well. And I guess they don’t throw their logo on Star Wars stuff now anyways just the Lucasfilm logo.

As for the melted Darth Vader helmet, I find it symbolic of the despecialized editions. Paying homage to the and worshipping is what Kylo Ren was doing with the helmet. We pay homage to the past by watching stuff that is or is close to the original theatrical releases. Plus I just really like the image. And it can apply to the OT since Vader’s cremation was done at the end of RotJ.

Currently a big work in progress but I’m aiming for a cool take on the 2011 complete saga box. But much much much darker.

I will constantly update this post.

Also these images aren’t exactly their final drafts. The final drafts will never be uploaded online as I don’t want people steeling my work and selling it.

Gonna prototype with white card stock next week and then I’m going to do my first run at the box. It’s gonna be awesome as I will be pressing art foil onto the outer shell.

--------- Progress ------------
1/1/2018 (1) - Currently Figuring out Book Panels
1/1/2018 (2) - Working on Outer box for now. I’ll probably come back to the book panels when I figure out extra features and pamphlets and stuff to design.
1/2/2018 - Added Discs
1/6/2018 - Added Outside cover for the “Guide.” The guide is actually complete and ready for printing. I’d have it printed but my printer just crapped out on me lol. So trying to find a place to get it printed.

I’m going to take a stab at creating a UHD BD Cover, disc label, and menu. Obviously there aren’t really any consumer friendly options for UHD Blu-ray authoring (probably will be years before anything open source will do menus). But I can basically get it prepped.

I haven’t really been able to be active in this community with my job this year but I’m dead set on helping get 4K77 on to UHD BD. I have constantly been playing around with jdobb’s UHD TS Muxing tool and trying to figure out what will get 4k onto a properly structured disc.

Obviously this would be easier with Scenarist (would have to win the lottery 4 times to get that one). There is also DVD Logic’s KITe UHD Authoring suite ($11,000 for HDMV UHD Authoring, $14,500 for Java based UHD Authoring). I am familiar with BluDisc Studio (from DVD Logic) so KITe shouldn’t be much different, so if people feel I’m competitent enough to do it and if people ask for it, well let me get some stuff done and added here, and then we’ll talk. I wish Adobe had kept up with Encore lol 😦

Blu-Ray and other HD box size STAR WARS covers
Time

So I did a half box for housing the trilogy. I used Harmy’s art. I’m editing the disc label right now because I actually did some menu authoring and re-encoding so I have true Blu-ray copies and not AVCHD.

Here are some pics: http://imgur.com/a/Vneb6

I can upload the psd files later. I just had to do the measurements a certain way because the Bluray cases I have are inbetween 11 mm and 12 mm in spine width. But they’re good cases so I suffered through the constant wasting of paper.

I used card stock on the final prints.
The Melted Darth Vader Helmet I took from a still of the Ep 7 trailer and photo-shopped it out and applied a filter (can remember what filter I used haha). Most of the blues are actually bright or actually purple in photoshop because they don’t show up well with a black background on paper.
