Red Dwarf Night: 10th Anniversary (now on Spleen) (Released)
Time

Colour correction on VHS sourced materiel is now finished...just the sound to do.

I am waiting until I have built the DVD before release. In the meantime does anybody out there have copies of the Patrick Stewart segments? I am using N2K7 VHS rip for most of them as it still holds a lot of detail. I have had to patch a couple of the segments with MP4 480x360 up-scaled. It fills in the blanks, but the quality is noticeable compared to the DVD, and VHS sources.

If over the next few weeks someone does have a rip of better quality please let me know and I will be able to upgrade those parts. If not then the final version will have to be as it is.

Red Dwarf Night: 10 Anniversary

I have been a massive fan of Red Dwarf since the early 90’s. On February 14 1998 I sat up and watched Red Dwarf Night, on BBC2. As I watched the broadcast I was also recording the show onto VHS (remember that?). I watched my recording to death, and around 2004 finally cleared out all my defunct Videos.

Ever since I was kicking myself, until a member over at spleen called N2K7 kindly uploaded his VHS rip as a DVD9. Fantastic as it was to see the recording again, I was frustrated that the 10 Anniversary Red Dwarf Night had never received the DVD treatment. Most of the shows recorded for that evening were later released scattered across the BBC DVD releases. The exception is Universe Challenge, and the Patrick Stewart segments (he was the host for the evening).

I then came up with the idea to use the VHS rip as a template, and replace as much as possible with DVD sourced material. The material that is only available through VHS rip uploads has been filtered corrected and up scaled as best as possible considering the sources.

The aim is to create the best possible version of this evening and then present as a home-brew DVD as a bonus to the official releases. I have edited out the non Red Dwarf adverts, and the BBC presenter VO which on the broadcast was over the BBC2 Skutter Idents. Other than these subtractions, the rest of the evening is presented in the highest quality outside of a future official release.

On 14 February 1998, the night before the tenth anniversary of the show’s pilot episode broadcast, BBC Two devoted an evening of programmes to the series, under the banner of Red Dwarf Night. The evening consisted of a mixture of new and existing material, and was introduced and linked by actor and fan Patrick Stewart. In addition, a series of special take-offs on BBC2’s idents, featuring the “2” logo falling in love with a skutter, were used.”

The night began with Can’t Smeg, Won’t Smeg, a spoof of the cookery programme Can’t Cook, Won’t Cook, presented by that show’s host Ainsley Harriott who had himself appeared as a GELF in the series VI episode “Emohawk: Polymorph II”. Taking place outside the continuity of the series, two teams (Kryten and Lister versus Rimmer and Cat, although Cat quickly departs to be replaced by alter ego (Duane Dibbley) were challenged to make the best chicken vindaloo.”

After a compilation bloopers show, featuring out-takes, the next programme was Universe Challenge, a spoof of University Challenge</span>. Hosted by original University Challenge presenter Bamber Gascoigne, the show had a team of knowledgeable Dwarf fans compete against a team consisting of Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Robert Llewellyn, Chloe Annette and Danny John Jules.”

This was followed by The Red Dwarf A–Z, a half-hour documentary that chose a different aspect of the show to focus on for each letter of the alphabet. Talking heads on the episode included Stephen Hawking, Terry Pratchett, original producer Paul Jackson, and Patrick Stewart. Finally, the night ended with a showing of the episode "Gunmen of the Apocalypse.”

50G versions? That could fit on a 64GB USB flash drive.

They are quite small and lightweight now. Still a little pricey but it would be the ezast thing to ship.

I bought a 64Gb flash for my girlfriend last October. It cost me £12. My mate said to me after, that anything above 32Gb in flash form is currently unstable and could loose its data. My GF stick still works fine.

My GF still works my stick fine!

Did you just one up your own joke?

 I did.

I see from your MySpleen post that this doesn't include any dialogue.  Do you know if there is any way to extract that?  That would be my personal highlight from this project.  In any case, good work on extracting the music.  It sounds like something worth giving a whirl.

My main motivation for originally starting this project was in the hope of grabbing the dialogue. I was planning on doing a fan edit myself and wanted these to give me some options. Unfortunately once I ripped all the sounds the dialogue was not there. Myself and someone else on this forum came to the conclusion that they are a part of the video files. As memory serves, I did some digging around online to try and find a way of decoding the video with the hope of then snatching the dialogue from those. I was not able to accomplish this and haven't had another crack since.

I also decided at the same time that I would abandon my TPM edit as the more I studied the film the more I realized it is terrible through and through.

could somebody please upload the team blue releases to spleen.

They were pulled. It's usually not a good idea to re-upload something that was pulled.

Team Blu SW has been uploaded on my spleen and so far its ok from Team blu so i guess its ok to upload there again :)

If people could do some uploads, or point me in the direction of where I might be able to find the other releases it would be appreciated?

So i have finally uploaded the sound files to drop box, except 4 files which kept on saying error. I will re-rip these at some point.

Unfortunately I still have had no joy getting the dialog which some of us vaguely remember being peppered throughout the game.....Maybe these are in the video files but haven't found a program to access them yet.

If anyone here would like the files I have uploaded them please pm me and I will send you the link.

These files are no longer available through the dropbox account I set up. I have just uploaded to spleen.

If anybody would like them uploaded anywhere else let me know and I will make it so!

What is your favorite versions of the following movies: Apocalypse Now, Alien, Aliens, Blade Runner and Terminator 2?
Time

Alien Theatrical- I don't mind any of the additional scenes in the DC, apart from the cocoon scene. Chop that out add all the rest to the theatrical and that would be a very sweet cut.

Aliens SE- interesting, this film I grew up watching the SE. A few years later I saw the theatrical and felt there were bits missing. I have a friend who grew up with the theatrical and can't stand the SE as he feels all the added stuff was unnecessary. Is everything in every film we enjoy necessary? I think this one depends on what you are used too.

T2 - I preferred the SE only because it cleared up a couple of continuity errors apparent in the theatrical due to cuts. I don't think I have seen an alternative ending so I am not sure which version of the SE I have actually seen? how many versions of this film are there? T2 is just great fun so I can watch either the theatrical or SE without issue. if I have to choose then SE.

Apocalypse Now- I have only seen the theatrical not reudx. I have been meaning to watch reudx for years and have always heard good things about it from friends... Reading this thread seems to suggest that its not well loved so I will have to make the effort to watch and make up my own mind.

Blade Runner- My favorite film. I think the DC is my favorite. It was the first version I saw, then the theatrical. The theatrical is interesting but the happy ending just feels tacked on. The FC I really enjoy, but the colour correction is too matrix, and although I really enjoyed the cleaned up visuals, to back up Harmy some of the shots were not re-comped as well as they could of been. The workprint is a nice dirty grungy looking thing. Really interesting.

Alien 3 The (*directors cut*)- I think is a much better version as far as pacing and character development. However I do  miss the dog. The dog is a pet and so I feel more tense with seeing the dog in pain than a dead Ox. I think Alien 3 is a very underrated film and always has been. Sure its not like aliens, but then aliens is not like alien. Could you imagine any studio green lighting the alien 3 script now?

Highlander 2 Renegade SE- I know that this film is shit.....but its a guilty pleasure. Sorry I know what you all think of me now and you are right. The SE did at least sort out the transitions and add the missing 15 mins from the 3rd act which at least made it more viewable that the theatrical version. Also the VFX were cleaned up nicely.

I am an editor by trade, and every time I look at one of my past projects I always find myself making changes. Some time will pass and with fresh eyes I think right that can be tidied up, or right I can re-do that a bit better. Its a strange thing. I loved Harmy's DE 1.0, watched them to death. Then I updated and got the 2.0, then 2.1 and now 2.5.If I enjoyed 1.0 so much why do I then get the next updated version??? Because its closer to the theatrical and thats what I want to see? Yes, accept again If I was happy enough with version 1.0 why did I even feel a need to see the updates? Why does the idea of the theatrical version even matter if I enjoyed 1.0 so much? Why do I look forward to Ady's ESB R If I am happy with the Harmy 2.0? I enjoy different versions for different reasons, its very hard to apply the word definitive to film.

please excuse my bad grammar and sentence structure, I have bad dyslexia which unfortunately makes me appear to be a moron in text.
