Are you asking people or are you asking me? And that is not meant to be a snarky question, but a genuine inquiry. Speaking about the ones that I am working on, I left ‘THX’ on there because I like the way it looks and, as you said, a bit of nostalgia. As far as why others may include it, I am afraid I cannot answer that one. Also, as I stated previously, once I have a finished version, it will be uploaded on Mega and my plans are to offer a totally minimalist, able to be customized approach and one with full text on the rear using the text from each film’s crawl; that way as people will be able to modify them as they desire. I guess, speaking for myself, it is really hard to find that prefect cover which really satisfies everything that I am looking for and I can imagine that other people feel the same way. Thanks for the input.

I will post a link with finished covers, with full and minimal text, as well as resources for the community. I am not actually using Gimp to compile everything, just to help with some of the building blocks, like removing backgrounds from logos and such. I have been taking those building blocks and using them in Sure Thing label maker, simply for ease of use; it doesn’t take the place of Gimp in terms of all that one can accomplish with Gimp, but it also is very easy to use and doesn’t make me pull what little hair out I have left like Gimp can do sometimes. I just need to practice a bit more with Gimp to get the hang of it, but I feel like I am only really using a mere fraction of its full capabilities.

Thanks bro. My tbought was to create a finished set with very little text so that other users could adapt them to meet their individual project needs. Would that be a good option for you? If so, I can finish them weekend.

Perhaps a finer point is that I am sure that any number of forum members would have done you a solid and made you some discs if you had covered the cost of materials. Just my 2 cents…

I really like these designs! The only thing I might change on the covers is the shot of Luke on the ESB cover- it’s a bit bug-eyed, or something. And the minimalist disc label is very nice. Once you have a good image for the background there’s not much else needed, in my opinion. Are you putting this together in Photoshop?

Thanks. As I mentioned previously, one of the biggest challenges for me is finding a set of posters that all three images match and look good and since I don’t have the artistic talent to create the images, I have to kind of work with what I can find. And don’t get me wrong, even the images that I don’t personally like are still really well done byt highly creative artists, so I do not want to be overly critical of their work; I guess I am just picky. The programs I am using are gimp and Surething label maker.

I did change the border to a thin white border on the covers, it doesn’t do much for Luke’s bug eyes, but I think it looks a bit cleaner.

Thanks. It was the program I mentioned in my previous post. Though I need to add that I did not create the art, just repurposed it for my disc design.

As far as transparent logos, the easiest way that I have found to create a transparent logo when I am unable to find one is by using gimp. There is a quick tutorial on youtube here:

As is said in the video, the fewer the colors you are trying to remove the better, but it is by far the easiest method I have found and I have used this technique to create and then save the logos and other parts I needed as png files.

In terms of sizing and other aspects of actual disc printing, first I have to ask what printer and program you are using. A lot of members here either use Epson or Canon printers to accomplish this. Personally, I use a Canon. It comes with its own software for disc printing which I did not find to useful, mainly because I could not make circular text. I purchased Sure Thing Label maker and thus far I have been pretty happy, but you may find another program better suits your needs.

I did find a lot for great images to work with on that website, both for the art and logos.

I’ve also tried the gimp image editor. It’s a bit confusing but I think I could get the hang of it. With some practice.

I’m still gonna be looking for help with finding transparent white logos for 20th Century Fox, Lucas Film, and Blu-ray. In what format should I be looking for those? PNG? GIF?

And does anyone have pointers for properly sizing, centering, and cropping finished images to accommodate the hole on a full face optical disc?

Yeah, that is the one, sorry for the mix up. Gimp is not the most user friendly program, but they are a lot of tutorials on youtube, so maybe they can be of help.

As far as tbe other logos go, you can often find stuff like the in other fonts. “Episode 1” font for example has both Lucasfilm and Fox. The blu ray logo can be found in a font as well. Places like “Dafont” have a bunch of them for free. Download what you want, unpack, right click and hit install.

Fanarttv.com has a pretty good selection of logos and other elements for discs and such. As far as programs, gimp is free and can do pretty much anything in terms of design you will need.
