When you say 'beating it'....  Do you mean with the disc on the table or in the console?

I completed the game, the disc remains safe and unharmed. I've only ever destroyed one disc before and it was about 12 years ago, and it was some awful basketball game and it was impossible. Plus I only payed a couple dollars for it.

I was playing the game Call of Duty 4 earlier because I live in the past and I was trying to beat in on the hardest difficulty and I got so pissed off that I took the disk out of the console and set it on the table and was about to start smashing it with my controller (which is held together with rubber bands) but then stopped myself because I knew that if I broke the game I would just go buy a new one eventually.

I did end up beating it though

I was just looking through some of my families old heirlooms and found a series of letters written by my great uncle from when he was in France during the first World War.

That's super cool. I wonder if he knew my great grandfather - he was an American who drove ambulances in France in WWI, and we still have his journals from that time.

That'd be neat if they did, they were probably both there at the same and for about the same amount of time since the US was only in the war for about a year. My uncle was actually wounded in battle, maybe he rode in one of those ambulances. Sadly we don't know which family member still has his purple heart medal, if it even still exists, but to my knowledge we have all the letters he wrote, plus two pictures of him taken while in France, he looks miserable in the photos but I can't blame him given how brutal that war was.

Was your great grandfather a volunteer, or was he in the military?

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Yeah, the recent pessimism in this thread is kind of hilarious considering there are at least three major Star Wars preservation/restoration projects going on at the moment. When all is said in done, there will be three very high quality copies of the original 1977, if not all being distributed freely. This isn't disappearing from history, folks.

Oh yeah, the OOT, while not widely available, is NOT lost.

Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?
Time

Oh my goodness! I've never seen the blu rays, so I've only just seen a couple low rez frames of that change a few years ago, and that looks TERRIBLE! Oh man... I think it's worse than the 97 CGI in Mos Eisley. Positively shocking...

Anyway, even the CGI added in 2011 was 10 years outdated

There is no "90's-looking" CGI in the '11..  nor DNR. The problem of those blu-rays are the old masters. Lucas had them scanned years ago, they would benefit from a new 4k scan for sure.

Isn't the only CGI they really improved (in 04) the Jabba scene? I agree that the things added newly in '11 don't look like they were rendered in the 90s, though they don't look great.

The Sarlacc still looks like fairly dreadful smooth, plasticy 90's CGI. It looks like a cutscene from a Playstation or Dreamcast game. Some of the Tatooine creatures look pretty bad as well, but better than the Sarlacc.

Yeah, like 90% of the CG is from the 90s. The only shots I'm aware of that aren't 90s are the door at Jabba's palace, the new R2 rock + new equipment shooting out of him in Jedi, and I guess the ewok blinking. The 04 Jabba was the TPM model from 1999, and I think the Sebulba thing in Jabba's Palace was also from the Phantom Menace (it looks like it) but I could be wrong on that.

Oh shut the fuck up already.

Whose fault is that we no longer have any film negatives that exist to restore the OT again? That we have to resort to secondary sources for restoring ONE OF THE LARGEST FRANCHISES IN MOVIE HISTORY?

You do realize that there have been some credible sources that have refuted the claim that the negative was destroyed. Vidiot said that the original negatives are still intact (although not in great shape), as well as copies of the negatives that are all fine according to him. Robert A Harris, a pro in the industry, has also expressed little concern over the state of the elements. Sorry for my lack of sources but I also recall reading an interview a while back where he said he knew that there were plenty of pristine sources for a proper release. Also, you really need to stop treating it like the OT are lost films. They may not be widely available in high quality, but the films are not lost. The Library of Congress has two prints of each film, a lot of prints are in the hands of collectors, and I'm sure that Lucasfilm possesses plenty of OOT sources in their archives. Empire of Dreams was allowed to use a lot of that for the documentary, including the Holiday Special, although that footage was not included in the final cut. If Lucas didn't destroy the holiday special, he didn't destroy the OOT. I know that he refused to release it but he didn't ritualistically burn all prints in a bonfire at Skywalker Ranch as part of a cult initiation.

Anyway, feel free to go back to comparing the SE to rape and George Lucas to Mao Tse-Tung or Hitler or whatever.

Terrible DVD/Blu-ray Cover Art
Time

Wow... Of all the great shots in that film, they decided on that frame for the cover?
The Duke looks like he just got punched in the gut!
Or he's about to puke...
Or both.

Yeah that was my reaction too. I feel like it had to have been a joke, like the people making the box art wanted to see how ridiculous of a cover they could get away with using.

We agree about the importance of the SE versions, and the prequels. Of course we will have to preserve them with care also.

We know Disney will never be able to figure out how to release those properly either, even if we walked up to them with a completed copy. They would still find a way to mess it up.

I guess I don't understand the "all or nothing" standard with the OOT. In another thread you said that a barebones release of the OOT would be worse than not having it. So by this standard it would have been better for the movies to never have been released on home video. The video tapes had inaccurate colors, the laserdiscs weren't particularly excellent compared to other laserdiscs. I mean, to say that anything short of absolutely perfect is unacceptable seems quite unfair. Not to mention, if Disney thinks that this is the attitude held by a lot of fans then I wouldn't blame them for not considering a release of the OOT.

If Disney can't manage to get out proper restorations of their own properties, they have no chance of getting someone else's right.

Why people continue to think they can ever get something right is a mystery in itself of gigantic proportions.

But Disney bought Lucasfilm though, not just Star Wars. Lucasfilm still exists, so it isn't like the people in charge of the Snow White restoration will be overseeing Star Wars home video releases

Negative 1: I guess I don't understand what exactly makes you assume that Disney is a death sentence for the OOT. I mean, there was enough demand for Lucas of all people to release it (as awful as the 06 dvd was) so I don't understand why you think that Lucasfilm under rational ownership would be more unreasonable than Lucas himself. As for your concerns about a subpar release, that's definitely something for all of us to worry about because Star Wars hasn't really ever been treated properly on home video.

I actually think that their apathy could be a bit of a good thing. If they don't want to do a "restoration" but still feel the need to release it, then maybe they won't put a lot of effort into ruining the colors or anything like LFL did in 2004. If they just want to release a blu ray to shut people up then we're more likely to get a release like AntcuFaalb said. Obviously that won't restore the film, but it'd provide us with a way to watch it in it's original glory. I also think that we need to start referring to Lucasfilm specifically instead of Disney, because I suspect that LFL is in charge of Star Wars home video decisions with somewhat little. I doubt corporate Disney is looking into LFL and telling them not to release the OOT or anything like that. As long as they're making money they're probably happy to let LFL be fairly independent. I could be (and probably am) wrong though.
