Wanted: WTB Star Wars Laserdisc.
Time

I need this one.

http://s25.postimg.org/ep3491m1b/00897.jpg

Now I don’t care if the disc plays or not, I want it strictly for the cover art. I’m planning on putting it in one of those record frames you see at FYE, etc. For that reason I’d prefer the PS one over the widescreen. If you have one please let me know. I’m in the US.

Thank you.

'97 vs. '04 (and '11) - Your preference?
Time

The 1997 releases looked good on the big screen, changes aside. Had Lucas simply remastered them and put them back in theaters- they would have done equally well. I still remember how the sound system shook when the first Star Destroyer went across the screen in Star Wars. For that reason alone, I don’t hate the '97 version with the same intensity as I do the 04 and 11 desecrations.

Original Trilogy: Luke's lightsaber color
Time

4 inch Luke had a yellow lightsaber. The Bespin Luke had a yellow one as well. 12 inch Luke had a blue lightsaber. 4 inch Obi-Wan had a blue lightsaber, but the 12 inch one had a yellow/green one. So weird. It took until ROTJ for Luke to get the proper green saber, but even then early releases had a blue one because of Lucas changing the color relatively late in production.

Ah, I didn’t realize those books were also about Han Solo

Yeah. Brian Daley wrote 3 that came out between Star Wars and Empire: Han Solo at Star’s End, Han Solo’s Revenge and Han Solo and the Lost Legacy. They are some of the best Star Wars books ever.

AC Crispin wrote a trilogy about Han Solo from age 19-Star Wars. They are ok- but will be ignored when we have the young Han Solo movie much like TFA ignored all those shitty EU post-Jedi books.

Why that trilogy?

the new Han Solo movie.

The Daley books I can totally understand. I doubt anything in the movie will contradict those. But the Crispen trilogy will be totally overwritten.

The Daley books in a leatherbound hardcover was a grail of mine- so I admit it bothers me more than it should.

What was George Lucas's worst decision with the Star Wars franchise?

I’d say his biggest mistake was thinking Star Wars should be “for kids”.

That’s his primary justification for making Han shoot second and Jar-Jar. And I’ll admit, being in 7th grade when Episode I came out I thought Jar-Jar was freaking hilarious!

That whole line of thought permeates the prequels, and unfortunately leads to them being dumbed down to bad saturday morning cartoon levels when it comes to story and script. It just looks like Lucas didn’t take his own universe seriously. Or perhaps he was more focused on “teaching” kids something and thought he’d have to dumb things down to get his message across to 7 year olds.

I’m surprised to hear some people like the prequels more than the TFA/R1. Sure they haven’t really gone anywhere new yet, but I’d rather have filler with decent characters and writing than a “new story” that makes no sense and makes cringe multiple times.

TFA’s biggest strength is the new cast. I genuinely want to know more about them, as much as I do Luke and Chewbacca. I have hope and excitement for the Last Jedi- which is more than I ever did for AOTC or ROTS.

Rogue One adds much to my viewing of Star Wars. Now I know why Tagge was so cautious about the Alliance.

I did a quick check of sold listings on Ebay. The GOUT Trilogy goes for about $75 on average, oftentimes more. There is demand, and you can’t pretend that its just hardcore fans. Each round of changes alienated and pissed off more and more people. Almost makes me wish Lucas had gotten to another revision- almost.

I got the trilogy for about $45 total from 2 different used video stores a few years back. I can only imagine that they’ve gotten harder to come by as time has gone on.

I got mine when the 2011 Blu-Rays came out. I picked Empire up from a used video place, Star Wars used and Jedi new from FYE.

That same FYE is closing and when I last went in had tons of the 2015 steelbooks brand new. Almost considered ROTS- but picked up Adele on vinyl instead.

I’ve really liked the last couple of episodes. Looks like we’re leaning into Rogue One with this last one. Once R1 comes out on Blu, I’m hoping we can do a comparison to see if this fleet is the exact fleet at Scarif.

Well I’m sure that the Flurry type carrier isn’t at Scarif (I forget what they call that ship in the new canon, but that design was lifted straight from Legends). Pablo Hidalgo says in this week’s recap video that most but not all of the ships from the end of this episode are in Rogue One, and that he just figures that the ships missing from the film are undergoing refits or repairs at the time and aren’t battle-ready.

Home One was at the end and isn’t at Scariff either. Maybe we will see Admiral Raddus in season 4. Or Ackbar.

All this talk makes me wonder why J.J. funded a remastering of PHANTASM but not STAR WARS '77. Then again, I suppose they were already in the process of the 4k scans by the time he was in talks to direct TFA.

Phantasm isn’t owned by a huge company though.

It was a personal project- much like Moroder’s Metropolis 30+ years ago. Star Wars is a huge seller- it shouldn’t need to be a personal project.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

There was an old Tales of the Jedi comic where Ulic was stripped of his ability to use the Force after killing his brother. He became a broken man and turned on his master, but finding no real peace. That’s what I want to see happen to Kylo Ren. Lose his ability with the Force and at the end have Rey, Finn and Poe not accept him. Make him a pariah and have him leave with the Falcon to the outer reaches of the galaxy- retaking the name Ben Solo and finally appreciating his father.

“Bad” as a point of view dates farther back in SW than the PT. Or at least a lie as a point of view does.

Of course, we’re all familiar with Ben’s speech. I just mean using it to explain Anakin’s turn could have been a good starting point if it was followed through competently.

Even if Anakin’s turn were done skillfully, there would still be a major problem with the entire story: the PT+OT = Saga becomes Anakin’s story

Not necessarily. There’s no reason why we can’t see the PT and OT as separate stories that tell the larger Skywalker narrative.

Disney seems to consider it the Skywalker Family Saga.

PT: The Tragedy of Darth Vader
OT: The Adventures of Luke Skywalker
ST: ???

The fam wanted to watch ROTJ tonight and I misplaced my despecialized copy…yeah I loathe the SE changes of ROTJ the most…I had myself leave the room because knowing my level of irritation would probably piss off some of the family members I am forced to deal with (PT is superior, TFA is bad). Oh boy…

So yeah…they need to release OUT officially on blu-ray and/or 4k…save me…

… and since I apparently need to own the blu-rays in order to ethically download and enjoy Harmy’s version and that’s never going to happen …

Even then, going through all the trouble of downloading Harmy’s version and burning it to a disc requires a level of technical know-how not everyone possesses. It’s no wonder people sell it on ebay.

I’ve been watching the auction for the Harmy blu-rays and it sold 34 copies this week. The same seller also has the first generation Holliday Special up for grabs for $20- its almost like 1995 again.

Ugh.

PT is superior? Are they mentally challenged?
