Idea: replacing the 'Crushed Blacks' of the 2004 and 2011 official releases...
Time

I've been fantasizing about doing this very thing for quite a while now, and after seeing this thread, I though I might play with the idea a bit.  I don't have V3 (yet), so it may not look spectacular.

I took this shot from harmy's (superb) ded, and this shot from gout.  After adjusting for the aforementioned distortion and whatnot, I came up with this result.

IMHO, some parts work pretty well, but some aren't perfect.  Maybe it would look more real if I did better with the shadows on his nose and jaw.  I'll take another look at it tomorrow.  Oh, and btw, the extreme blockiness you see in the upper left isn't part of the matte I generated, its just due to the poor quality of the gout rip I have on hand.  If it is/were possible to adjust for the warping with a script, or perhaps depending on the consistency of the warping, this might be possible.

Why do you think he does it?

+1 for The Michael Jackson analogy and everything Zombie said.

My own belief is that he knows, on some level, that he isn't as good as he wants to be, that he had to rely on others to make Star Wars and all of that, and he doesn't want to accept it.  There was that one part in Zombie's excellent article on Marcia in which a journalist talking to her used the term "master director" to describe George, much to her amusement/frustration, and she said that he would love such a description.  I think that moment really encapulates his issue with it.  His redoing of effects, color timing, etc.  seems to me to be a bumbling attempt to live up to being the "master director" that he wasn't.  Maybe someday he'll accept his inadequecies.

Btw, @promus: I love that sig ;-)

Let's all say something nice about George Lucas. No insults allowed.

Boy...this is going to be a real challenge...give me a second....

But seriously come to think of it, I am very appreciative of the fact that he didn't let Kurtz and the others involved kill off Han in Jedi.  To me, that's one of the few times in history when he's been on the right side of an issue like that.  If that had happened, I would have never ever forgiven them, and probably wouldn't be as into the OT today.

Also, the speech he gave against modifying films was quite good.

Possible Non-SE screening of ROTJ in Modesto,CA?
Time

Yeah, too bad about that.  I'd forgotten how nauseating the sarlac's beak looked.  It also had some minor fading in certain parts, and a slight green tint, but nonetheless I found it fracking incredible, at least once the abominable Jedi Rocks had finished.

This was my first time ever seeing any version of star wars on actual film(Except tpm, but that doesn't count), and I don't think I've ever seen special effects presented more convincingly.  The space battle was fucking epic.  None of the releases I've ever seen have ever conveyed that sense of depth in the moving starfields and ships, and the resolution was obviously fantastic.  Despite all of the flaws of the cg and and the print's passage through time, never before has it seemed so strongly that its right there happening before my eyes.

Thank you so much, Nadcraker for pointing this out, this was really a one of a kind experience for me.
