STAR WARS: REBELS (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread
Time

Back when it originally aired I thought it was kinda bland, and had a few interesting ideas, but was royally pissed off when the first two seasons hinted at Ezra’s darker tendencies only to completely ditch that subplot after the season 3 premiere, and Ezra remains a goody-two-shoes for the remainder of the series. Creatively speaking I found that to be a cowardly move. I also hated how it was always Mission Accomplished with almost no casualties for the Rebels, retroactively cheapening the victories of the OT and painting the Empire as absurdly incompetent, the ultimate insult being how Thrawn is thwarted in the series finale by a whiny teenager.

If it wasn’t obvious by now, I thoroughly dislike Star Wars Rebels because it presents the franchise at its most sanitized, play-it-safe version where everything is smooth sailing fo the good guys.

Does anyone think that making Vader a tragic figure was a big mistake? I feel like beyond the lack of camaraderie between Anakin and Obiwan, they should have shown him liking power, or liking throwing people around. It would fit more with his attitude in SW towards the Admiral Motti for example. It would be more believable, and any idea of regret or sadness could be much more subtle.

“A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defence, never to attack.” - Yoda, The Empire Strikes Back.

Anakin should been portrayed as relishing in combat as opposed to other Jedi like Obi-Wan who only fight to protect the innocent, and feeling clearly restrained by his Jedi training, a clear indicator that he’s on a darker path. I always felt his falling to the Dark Side due to a desire to protect Padme was stupid.

Yeah it’s some combination of

 1. The humans are racist
 2. The Gungans purposefully hide their level of tech from the humans
 1. It’s not just humans. Neimodians make the exact same remarks about Gungans being primitive.
 2. Makes sense. I would assume that prior to the events of TPM, any Gungan who travelled outside of the city would feign having little knowledge of technology, until the Battle of Naboo forced them to reveal they aren’t primitive at all.

Maybe someone else posted this before.

Din using the heavily modified Naboo N-1 Starfighter as his personal ship doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. If anything it would have worked better as a shuttle attached to his new freighter for reconaissance, as the N1 only has room for himself and a Yoda species at the back. Where would he fit anyone or anything else, be that cargo or a captured person for bounty? I also doubt the crammed cockpit of the N1 would make for a comfortable nap during long flights.

Michael Corleone from The Godfather is a better young Darth Vader then the actual young Darth Vader.

The Prequels miss so much of the nuance that made Vader so great in the OT. His sadistic humor, his boldness, his cold, domineering presence, how calculating he was. In the Prequels, he’s a hot-head that flies off the handle. OT Vader got mad, but he wielded it like a blunt weapon. OT Vader is like Michael Corleone, but PT Anakin is like Sonny Corleone (at least in terms of temper; Sonny was never intolerably whiny). And that doesn’t mix. They’re two different characters.

I posted elsewhere that when writing the PT George Lucas should have used Michael Corleone as the basis for young Anakin Skywalker.

The concept of a digital only console is one of the worst ideas that the modern gaming industry has done, and that’s saying something. Once the servers are shut down, the manufacturers turn every copy of that system into non-recyclable waste. This has already happened with the Ouya and PSP Go, and it’s going to become a massive problem further down the road.

As someone who spent three years without any internet access I agree.

Reading the latest posts on this thread, I would say that’s my biggest problem with Filoni, his total inabilty to move on from characters and milking them for all their worth. This is best expemplified by his incessant shoehorning of Ahsoka in every last bit of SW media.

I agree 100%. Ahsoka is becoming the character version of Tatooine. Enough already.

I really don’t get this complaint at all. Outside of animation she’s only other been in 1 episode of Mandalorian season 2 and 2 episodes of Book of Bobba Fet where she gets less than 10 minutes of screen time. She hasn’t in my opinion been shoehorned into this series. If they were going to do Grogu needs to be sent to the Jedi the only ones alive, and not missing, during this time period are Luke and her, and she has a previous relationship with Bo Katan. Like if she was in more of The Mandalorian I’d maybe get this complaint, but she hasn’t shown up at all in Season 3

I strongly believe Ahsoka should have died when she faced Darth Vader in Malachor. It would have been a powerful storytelling moment, but no, Filoni had her survive thanks to some time-travelling hijinks.

I don’t like Qui-Gon. My problem isn’t so much with the character himself. Just the fact that he steals away character traits and importance that should have been given to Obi-Wan. Also, I think a lot of fans “oversell” him nowadays as being “the wisest Jedi.”

As I’ve posted a few times before, my biggest problem with Qui-Gon is that he acts the way a young eager Padawan would act, whilst Obi-Wan is very by-the-book and conservative despite being a novice. It’s like Lucas got the roles mixed up and went with it anyway.

This. I don’t mind aliens speaking basic, but almost all of them do and with mostly with American accents, and this is what gives it a cosplah feel because they don’t sound alien at all.

StarkillerAG’s comments hit the nail on the head. The Mandalorian and the wider Mandoverse feels like cosplay Star Wars.

Also, let’s have aliens speaking alien languages.

If aliens are given foreign accents then everyone will accuse Disney of racism. I still remember when some criticized the accents of Jar Jar Binks and Nute Gunray.

If there’s one thing I did learn about my one time it’s that it made me realize I’m far more interested in giving pleasure than in receiving, which is why it’s very unlikely I’ll ever hire another prostitute, as you pay them to receive pleasure.

Just to be clear BTW, I want a purely physical relationship. I’m also fully aware reciprocity is key, as I want a woman who’s into me as much as I’m into her. Think Last Tango in Paris minus the whole getting killed in the end.

Giving is much better than receiving 😉

Yeah. That’s the sort of reputation I want to have among women, as the guy who can give them a really great time in bed.
