Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Perhaps the old x-wings were already just that - old - at the battle of Yavin? It would make sense that a rag tag band of rebels fighting the government doesn't have access to the latest and greatest military technology and instead has to scrounge whatever old junk they can get their hands on.

I'm not disagreeing with you in the fact that I, too, would love to see the classic x-wings in some capacity alongside the new ones. I'm just pointing out that there are some very valid counter arguments to your reasoning and that the new x wings do have a reasonable explanation using "real world" logic.

You seem to be saying that their appearance should remain unchanged in the thirty or so years between the OT and episode 7 b/c that's what happens to aircraft in the real world. I'm saying that, one: that's not entirely accurate and aircraft (commercial and military) DO have significant modifications to their appearance over time - even if the old models are still hanging around when the new ones come out; and two: you're implying by your first assumption that the rebels' ships in the OT were relatively new which I think is a very poor and illogical assumption for the reasons I already stated and this is backed up by the fact that they look freaking old, beat up, and worn out already at the battle of Yavin.

I love the original x-wing and really hope to see it onscreen again. When the new x-wing was revealed I was a bit disappointed at first. But having this conversation has made me realize that it actually makes much more sense to have new and updated x-wings than to have the same old ships still hanging around in large numbers. And so now I'm actually warming up to the new design quite a bit. But I hope maybe Luke at least still flys the same old ship he blew the Death Star to bits with! I mean, who would get rid of that ride after something like that!?

Nice to see the next generation of the X-wing in finished form. Is the mouse droid a hint of the Empire being in Episode VII?

I'd rather the X-wing and other OT aircraft/spacecraft didn't change in appearance at all. Here in the real world, well-established aircraft designs don't change their outer appearance very often. For how long has the F-16 looked the same? Or the "Huey" helicopter? Or the 737 airliner? Or the Cessna 172?

Frequent changes in appearance is mostly a consumer automobile thing, even though it is entirely unnecessary (the classic VW Beetle is a good example). Military and commercial vehicle/aircraft manufacturers tend to not fix what isn't broken. The Humvee has looked the same for 30 years.

Given that the Star Wars universe technology is far more advanced than real-world technology, they've had a much longer time to perfect things, and it follows that they would have even longer-running military/commercial designs than we have in the real world. The PT was way out in left field in this respect.

On the plus side, if they must change the X-wing's appearance, at least they didn't go overboard with it. In fact, the one in that video clip looks closer to the Ralph McQuarrie concept art than the OT X-wings did.

I disagree with your idea that aircraft don't change appearance significantly in their lifespan. Take a look at the photos below. The first is a 737-200, the second a 737-900. The -900 is much newer, much longer, has much longer wings with enormous winglets, newer and totally different looking engines, no eyebrow windows on the cockpit, etc. etc. I don't think the changes to the x-wing design we've seen are any more drastic than these real world examples. Both are clearly from the same original design and share many of the same features, but when you analyze the details there are major differences. For examples in the military world, check out an old F/A-18C compared to a new F/A-18E super hornet or an old F-16A vs the Mitsubishi F-2 (both derived from the same airframe).

Does anyone else think the music in this is clearly a take on the basket chase theme from Raiders of the Lost Ark?

Overall I think I'm going to like this show. It's a pretty standard Disney style cartoon aimed at kids, but it's set in the OT and seems to do a pretty good job of capturing the feel of the OT, in a Disney cartoon fashion. Would I love something that was much stricter in its adherence to the look, feel, tone, "realism", and established physics of the OT? Absolutely! But that's clearly not what this ever intended to be. Bent for what it IS intended, it looks pretty fun. There's some things I'm not fond of (the madolorian girl and the slingshot in particular) but I can accept or look past those things if the show is good enough overall.

Hairy hen, what are your thoughts on watching the 5.1 mix on a sony soundbar with subwoofer? Im not a big audiophile and don't remember the exact specs but I know it has more than two speakers in the bar and is capable of decoding the main types of surround sound (the box listed all the types it was compatible with, and it was all the common ones you see on the back of DVDs and blurays).

I like the idea of thinner blades, but you guys are right in that it's not exactly "totally" accurate to the OT. The saber blades in the OT actually varied greatly in their look because they were hand animated. Sometimes they were thick, sometimes they were thin, sometimes they were flat out FAT. There are specific shots and scenes where the blades are much thinner, and these specific shots have always been my personal favorite look for Lightsaber blades and I believe it is this look they are trying to recreate for rebels. Specific examples would be Vader's saber in '77 and certain shots/sequences in ESB. Vader's saber in ANH is pretty consistently quite thin and rather long. In ESB there are a number of shots, usually close-ups, in the final duel where either Luke's or Vader's (or sometimes both) saber blades are quite thin. I think several shots specifically in the carbon freezing chamber are like this.

Even the little window on the building is from the deathstar II.

Or, tie fighters, which also happen to be from '77... In fact, that window is FAR closer to a tie fighter windshield than the death star 2 window. Im not really impressed with what I see so far either, but geez, people are picking the smallest nits to be critical of...

Not sure why people are so critical of the sail barge style ship? Yes it has thrusters pointing down but it also has the same engine/exhaust pipe looking thing sticking out of the back as Jabba's original sail barge which looks like it would provide some sort of forward thrust.

As for the design, I would assume the barge and skiffs were not native to tatooine but imports from another planet. It would stand to reason the company that made them might also make other vehicles, so why not a starship? I mean, in real life a company like Bombardier makes airplanes, trains, snowmobiles, etc.

And maybe the skiff guard costumes, since they seem aesthetically similar to the design of the skiffs/barge are typical clothing of the people from the planet where the vehicles are made? Perhaps Jabba's, when he imported those vehicles, also hired some people to help operate and maintain them? And here they are again operating the ships they produced? Seems reasonable.

FWIW, Leia as a fighter pilot started way back with Splinter of a Mind's Eye (the novel), did it not? Doesn't she pilot a Y-wing at some point in that book?

Personally I'm not a fan of Leia being a pilot either, but I've never cared for how in the EU it seems anyone and everyone can fly a ship... That's certainly not the way things were in '77. "Whose gonna fly it kid? YOU?!"

Wow that looks good. I get such warm happy feelings every time I see updates to these threads. Between this and Harmy's work, I no longer have that awful gut wrenching feeling of dread when I think about the state of Star Wars. It's safe. The materials in the hands of Lucasfilm/Disney may or may not be safe now, but The OT is safe. Thanks to fans. It's awesome.

Sigh, those recent images have killed a lot of the excitement I was feeling for this show. I haven't been following it super closely so I don't know if it's been sen before or not but that slingshot thing is just stupid and disappointingly Disney-ish. And MORE wannabe boba fett crap? Yawn. I mean, I like Boba Fett, he's a cool character with an awesome costume and intriguing mystery about him (assuming, like me, you completely ignore the prequels and only watch the OUT). But geez have they run that into the ground.

I think the ship carrying the two TIE Fighters is awesome. Reminds me of some of the things the Nazis did with their bombers carrying two or three fighter planes. And I see no scale issues. It's a small ship, probably smaller than the Falcon. Large enough for a few rooms, maybe a couple of extra crew bunks for the fighter pilots. It's an awesome idea for a small but effective scout ship, especially since TIEs don't have hyperdrives of their own...

As for the larger image with the star destroyers, again I see no scale issues. There is NOTHING in that image that acts as a point of reference for how close the TIEs are to the other ships. For all we know the fighters could all be much closer to the camera than the other ships.

And the truth is, scale was never all that strictly adhered to in the OT anyway. If you really start analyzing it, the scale of ships and vehicles totally falls apart. I mean, geez, the interior Falcon sets couldn't even fit inside the (unintentionally but severely undersized) "full scale" Falcon prop in ESB.

I'm actually getting excited for this. I agree that the characters might be a little TOO Disney-ified. But so far the over all feeling I'm getting is that this might be the first Star Wars media to really grab me and capture that classic Star Wars feel in years. I watched some of the character introduction videos and was actually interested! Something I can't say for any new Star Wars characters since I don't know when. That new Jedi guy sounds awesome. Very Kyle Katarn, who happens to be one of my favorite non-film Star Wars characters ever. So that's awesome!

It seems a shame that they are going to include all the interiors

But those don't even fit inside the exterior, as I understand it.

Well, not exactly. The live action interior set pieces do not fit inside the live action exterior set piece (specifically the one built for ESB i believe) because the exterior set was built at the incorrect scale and is actually much too small.

Something about a mix up with the plans and that the interiors were built in one location while the exterior was built in another.

ugh, i'm fighting a cold and accidentally slept through it and can't stay up for the next one. is there any reason this can't be posted somewhere where it's available to watch any time for members or something? Kind of like how teamnegative1 posts password protected vids that can be watched at any time? Even if there was a cutoff, like, you can watch it any time from now to one week from now or something.

The bit I'm especially curious about is what Lucasfilm has to say/think about ot.com...

Canon; A philosophical question.
Time

Nope, don't care at all. I like the original cuts of the OT. If I had to pick a "cannon" that would be it. But I also like a smattering of the EU. The old Han Solo novels, some of the comic books, the Thrawn trilogy, the Jedi Knight video games. But to me it's all just entertainment. It's fun stories featuring characters and locations/environments that I enjoy. I don't take any of it too seriously.

A good example is the silly 90's comic book where Boba Fett fights Darth Vader. I actually like it. It's utterly ridiculous and incredibly corny, and I don't for one second think it fits in with the "film universe". But I like Darth Vader and I like Boba Fett and I think it's a fun idea to see them fight. And the comic did it in a way that, while quite silly, didn't do anything to make me roll my eyes in disgust by changing the central qualities of either character.

So that's about it. The original films are sacred ground. Anything else is fun escapism, so long as it generally fits with the tone and established characterizations of the original films, but mostly doesn't walk all over or completely fly in the face of what came before it (like so much of the prequel stuff did).
