Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released!
Time

You can always try the Matlab script from the thread I linked.

I have to correct myself though. I said that I used 49 rotations to create the image, which looks exactly like yours. Turns out that's wrong. My algorithm just used 1 rotation and matched the PDF. This means that your algorithm probably just matches the PDFs as well. If you want a get closer to the target colors, you have to match the PDFs in different color spaces as well. This is probably what makes the PDF algorithm look more closer than your algorithm.

Anyway, I'm going to modify my script, and then I will post more comparisons. Probably tomorrow.

I managed to produce the same picture as you, DrDre:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/138479

The algorithm matches the probability density function (PDF) of each image. If you do this with just the original color space, the colors will hardly mach. So the idea of the algorithm is to transform the color space and match the PDF again. The transformation of the color space is done by multiplying the picture with a rotation matrix. The algorithm does this N times. In this example I calculated 50 rotation matricies and used all of them to create the image in post #5. In the image of this post I still calculated 50 rotation matrices, but just used the first 49 of them to do the color transfer. In this image I used just one rotation.

Yes, you can correct other frames of a scene as well. The algorithm has an input image and a target image. The goal is to get the colors from the target image into the input image. However, the algorithm only provides good results, if the input image and target image look similar. So it would only make sense to match with frames of the same scene.

Seems like you used something like this: (http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Colour-matching-for-fan-edits/topic/7257/)

Because I implemented this method in Scilab and I get those grainy pictures as well.

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/138463

However, if you look at the face, you'll see that the colors are matching the original more using the PDF method. But mine has more noise.

Anyone tried that script in Matlab? I converted it into Scilab and the creation of 10 rotation matrices took me about 2 minutes. Now I'm applying the transfer algorithm to two 256x192 images and it has been running since 15 minutes. What am I doing wrong? Am I supposed to just insert a few samples of each picture into the algorithm? Currently I'm using every pixel, which means I have 256*192=49152 samples.

Edit: Nevermind, I've solved it. The algorithm is pretty fast.

I tweaked the script after playing with Superresolution. The SR plugin doesn't really give better results with this source. But I found another Script called MSR, which uses MVTools and doubles the size. The final upscale to 1080p is done with nnedi3_resize16. I've decided to go with FullHD as it gives a better image. I also played with the sharpness function of nnedi3_resize16. It gives a sharper image, but it also enhances the noise and artefacts.

Star Wars GOUT in HD using super resolution algorithm (* unfinished project *)

Great thread. Very informative.

I tried v10 on Star Wars SE97. The changes are much more subtle. Probably because the source was already in good condition. I tried it with the Demo Version of SR, so there are diagonal lines. However, you can still see that the algorithm results in a sharper image.

Antinatalism (The Tree of Life) (Released)
Time

What is life? Is it desireable? Is imposing life moral? These are questions that are being explored in this short documentary. It starts with the beginning of the universe and ends in our modern times. It explores how life functions, what its tools are and how it applies to humans.

Facts:

  • Footage from The Tree of Life

  • Added Narrator who explains the Antinatalist Argument

  • Complete New Soundtrack

  • 24 Minute runtime (credits excluded)

The documentary is edited to fit the narration. Therefore most of the original film is cut.

Structure:

  • Creation of the Universe (Atoms -> Matter -> Planets - > Earth - > DNA molecule -> Dinosaurs -> Humans)

  • Baby Stages of Humans (interaction with environment, sensations, comfort, discomfort)

  • Adolesence (hunger vs. fear, senses, memory, learning, language)

  • Adult Life (desire, sex, social groups, politics)

  • Modern Life (humans as vessels of DNA molecule, life is competition, asking the antinatalist question)

JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit: turning a mediocre trilogy into one really good film (Released)
Time

Yeah, that's the one I saw.

This will probably come off as preachy and anal, but a scene usually consists of beats which build the scene. Every scene has an antagonistic force that causes the heros problems. The hero in this scene is Bilbo who wants to bring the Dwarfs into the mountain. What causes him problems is the locked door and the Dwarfs impatiance. This is shown in beats like Dwalin destroying his axe and builds to the moment, whenthe Dwarfs are leaving, which is the lowpoint of Bilbo. But he then overcomes those antagonistic force by being more persistent and his committment to help the Dwarfs. It's because of Bilbos characteristics that the Dwarfs are going into the mountain.

That's why it feels odd to me to remove the climax of the scene. But then again, it's your cut and if it works for you than go ahead.

I'd like some opinions on this clip. I realize the scene of the company finding the secret door is pretty close to how it was in the book. But after watching it over and over, I felt like it could be condensed without losing too much, so a 7-minute scene was then cut down to 2 minutes.

I'm honestly undecided whether I want to keep this altered version in my fanedit or not, so let me know what you think. Trimming a scene like this means I'm not completely adhering to a "book faithful" version of the film, but at the same time the film's pace is more consistent with the other cuts I've made.

https://vimeo.com/120888098

I think this cut is too much. The core of this scene is the dwarf losing their faith and Bilbo restoring it. Your cut omitted the climax of that scene, which resulted in an odd viewing experience.

I like your other cuts, though. Especially the way you resolved the Smaug scene. I think it's the best one I've seen so far.

The Hobbit - The Jackson Fan Edit (* unfinished project *)
Time

In the wake of all those interesting Hobbit fanedits, I have decided to do my own cut. I have watched most of them and they all stay as close to the book as possible. This leads to plot issues and unresolved subplots during the third movie, because of the way the movies are written. What’s worse, some fan edits are trying to fit the story in a preset time window (e.g 3 hours), which leads to weird cuts that don’t fit the overall editing structure of the movie. Especially the endings of those cuts don’t feel like a proper movie.

My intention with this cut is to create a movie that stays close to Jacksons film making style. This means I will keep the original ending and keep all subplots that are necessary. Yes, this means there are some cringe worthy scenes between Tauriel and Kili, but it’s a good trade off to get a coherent movie. It also means the movie will be as long as it needs to be. The running time is currently 6h41m, but I’m waiting for the extended edition of Battle to see if there’s something I can add.

The overall theme of the final movie is the friendship between Bilbo and Thorin.

Overview of changes:

  • Radagast is removed, but the Dol Guldur subplot is still there. Radagast is only mentioned during the White Council when Gandalf reveals the Morgul Blade.

  • Azog is mentioned for the first time by the Goblin King. The group sees him outside of the Misty Mountains and he fights Thorin. I’ve also kept the Dol Guldur scenes from Desolation and the Orc Gathering scenes form Battle. This was done to have some nice saber-rattling scenes, like we had in the LOTR movies.

  • Sauron is in the movie, as is the White Council, which starts of the whole subplot. Gandalf goes to Dol Guldur, gets captured and is then saved by the White Council.

  • Tauriel and Kili. The Legolas triangle is toned down, by removing the scene between Tauriel and Thranduil and his arrogant moment when the dwarfs are put in the cells. Legolas’ feelings for Tauriel are now much more subtle. He seems more like a close friend that doesn’t approve of Kili.

  • Alfrid and The Master are toned town but not removed completely . I have kept the scene when Bard is reunited with his kids after he killed the dragon. There was no good way to edit the scene, and I think it’s important to see how Bard finds his kids and how he becomes the leader of the Laketown people. But all of his shenanigans during the final battle are gone.

Changes in detail:

  • Film starts with the theatrical prologue. I have also kept Frodo, because there are no good ways to remove him without throwing up the editing style.

  • “Blunt The Knives” is removed, to give the movie a more serious tone at the beginning and to have just one song, so people don’t get the impression they are watching a musical.

  • Thorin and Balin talking about life in the Blue Mountains is removed.

  • No Radagast, no Azog flashback

  • Troll scene is untouched.

  • Group goes to Rivendell after Gandalf gives Bilbo his sword

  • Gandalf saying that they have been ambused by orcs is removed

  • Include Bilblo exploring Rivendell and Gandalf and Elrond talking about Thorin as they walk to the White Council.

  • White Council is edited to remove Gandalf talking about an orc attack. The scene now implies that Gandalf has spoken to a wizard called Radagast way before the events of the movies.

  • No Stone Giant battle. Bilbo slips and is saved by the dwarfs, to keep the “You are not one of us” speech from Thorin

  • The group then meets the Goblin King and Bilbo finds the Ring and Gollum. Gollum is completely untouched and I’ve edited some of the goblin scenes. We see Gandalf joining the group and starting the fight, but we don’t see him tossing the head from that Goblin. The heavy CGI scene between the dwarfs and the goblins is removed. Bilbo puts the ring on and then sees the dwarfs running out of the mountain.

  • The rest of Unexpected is pretty much untouched. The group meets Azog, he fights Thorin, the eagles save them, and they gaze upon Erebor.

  • Cut to extended prologue of Desolation. This is necessary to have a good transition between the dwarfs looking at Erebor and Bilbo seeing Azog. It fits the current flow of the story. The prologue also establishes several sublots: Thorins father being missed, Azog wanting to end his bloodline and someone paying a price on his head.

  • The movie follows Desolation until Beorn turns into a human. I’ve removed his extended introduction and but kept the extended scene between him and Gandalf talking about Angmar

  • Mirkwood is theatrical because the extended one drags on to long

  • The dwarfs get captured by the elves and Kili is saved by Tauriel

  • Kili talking to Tauriel when the dwarfs are put in their cells is removed, as is Legolas being arrogant about dwarfs. The talk between Tauriel and Thranduil is also removed. I like Tauriel rebellious nature during the talk, but there was no good way to edit the subsequent introduction of the Legolas love triangle. So I’ve cut it completely. Kili and Tauriel have their first talk about the the talisman.

  • Barrel escape is untouched. Yes there is CGI-Legolas and Bombur, but this is a Jackson trademark. There are similar silly scenes in LOTR

  • Gandalf meeting Radagast is removed.

  • The dwarfs meet Bard and I’ve kept all his scenes until they arrive in Laketown. Alfrid is introduced when he questions Bard at the gate. The Introduction of the Master is removed.

  • Laketown is theatrical up until they are captured. The scene between the Master, Bard, Alfrid and the group is extended, to include Bilbo vouching for Thorin.

  • Dwarfs leaving Laketown is theatrical to remove the extended scene between the Master and Alfrid. The remaining dwarfs go to Bard.

  • The group walking to Erebor is extended. We see the Thrush

  • Cut to Gandalf walking in Dol Guldur, after Thorin says that they can’t wait for him. The subplot about Thorins father gets resolved.

  • The movie then follows the extended cut up until Tauriel and Legolas arrive in Laketown to fight the orcs.

  • Bofur gives Athelas to Tauriel. Cut to Tauriel healing Kili. Cut to Bilbo running into Thorin inside Erebor. The final scene between the dwarfs and Smaug is cut similar to this: https://vimeo.com/117273501. This was done to remove the heavy action scenes between Smaug and Dwarfs, because they distract from the subsequent Laketown attack and cause an overload of action scenes. Legolas fighting Bolg in Laketown is also removed.

  • The Laketown attack starts with Tauriel watching in the sky, and not with the Master. The Master is still there, so we can see Bard escaping the prison. But the Master is removed when Bard is interacting with Smaug.

  • Alfrid is removed from the first Laketown survival scene. He’s still there when Bard rejoins with his kids

  • Bard talking with Legolas is removed

  • The White Council saving Gandalf is edited to remove Radagast. There’s a continuation error going on, but the scene is still watchable.

  • Laketown people walking into Dale is removed. Dwalin tells Thorin that Laketown people are streaming into Dale. Cut to Dwarfs building up a wall.

  • The rest pretty much follows Battle. Alfrid is removed when possible. No Radagast flying on a eagle.

The violet line is from the authoring. The first few frames of the vob contains some frames of the DVD menu at the beginning, which messes the whole image up. I fixed it by cropping the image before resizing.

I applied QTGMC and MSharpen again and yes, it gets better results. The stars are brighter and there are more details.  It blurs the picture a tiny bit, but it's a good trade-off. It looks really great now.

I'm using MCTemporalDenoise now. It doesn't blur the image as much. The medium settings are a good compromise between denoise and sharpness.

Yeah, I'm new to this. Thank you for your input.

I tweaked the script a bit.

LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\dgindex\DGDecode.dll")

MPEG2Source("VTS_01_1.d2v")

Trim (173561,173786)

Deblock()

FastDegrain(3)

QTGMC(InputType=2,Sharpness=0,TR2=0,NoiseProcess=2)

#BlackmanResize(1314, 722)

spline36resize(width()*2,height()*4)

ResampleHQ(1314,722,dither=true,chroma_kernel="Spline36")

Crop(4,116,-30,-94)

LimitedSharpenFaster (ss_x=1.0, ss_y=1.0, Smode=3, strength=200, wide=true)

This results in: http://i6.minus.com/iUIwlylLTHJyR.png

When I don't use LimitedSharpen and use the sharpen method from RU.08 I get:

http://i5.minus.com/i90WdggvPPc7Y.png

I did a third time without the Blur(0.4) function:

http://i4.minus.com/ibnzJ75yMu7so9.png

I did the same with Leia's face:

Limited: http://i2.minus.com/iIOdPIL0LqBmB.png

MSharpen+Blur: http://i5.minus.com/io957iOrCg4tz.png

MSharpen only: http://i3.minus.com/ittOYJHM5bVDP.png

I like LimitedSharpen the best. It produces the sharpest image.

Feedback Wanted: my Empire Strikes Back SE97 720p upscale

This project is about the<span style=“line-height: 14.3999996185303px;”> </span>1997 Special Edition of <span style=“line-height: 14.3999996185303px;”>Empire Strikes Back. The goal is a sharp looking 720p upscale.</span>

<span style=“line-height: 14.3999996185303px;”>The German (Gkar) and Scandinavian broadcast have been considered as sources. I compared different scenes and came to the conclusion that the Scandinavian broadcast has a better picture quality. Therefore the source of this project is the Scandinavian broadcast. </span>

There are two main processes involved in this project. Upsacling and Sharpening. Both are done using Avisynth 2.5.8.

I use the BlackmanResize with default values to upscale the picture. I also tried LanczosResize with 4 tabs but this filter is a tiny bit worse than Blackman.

The picture is then cropped to remove the black bars.

After this step the picture is sharpened in order to get the HD look. This is done by using LimetedSharpenFaster in MinMaxSharpen mode with a 5x5 neighborhood. I don’t use super sampeling because it produces a poorer image of my test clips <span style=“color: #800080; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 19.0499992370605px;”>
</span>

Some sample clips are encoded in MeGUI using x264 with a crf of 16 and tuned for film. Below are two comparisions. Both are snapshots taken in VLC media player.

Broadcast: http://i2.minus.com/i0KdoUYUwehwa.png

Upscale: http://i3.minus.com/i2ugqyEn7gPk9.png

Sharp: http://i5.minus.com/i7D8tGzgipztf.png

Broadcast: http://i4.minus.com/ibo5TWUwB4nQ9g.png

Upsacale : http://i4.minus.com/ivnvg6WiH38dE.png

Sharp: http://i1.minus.com/ibgaTrrJq0mz4q.png

I also toyed around with noise reduction to see how it will affect the picture. I used  QTGMC before Upsacling.

QTGMC: http://i4.minus.com/iJoxh7USELzGQ.png

As you can see, this blurs the image. It will also significantly decrease the encoding speed. I’m not really sure if I should use this filter. What do you guys think?
