Which version/release of the Star Wars movies do you watch and why?
Time

Okay, so I don't know if this is off topic, but if someone could point me in the right direction, that would be nice.

I own what is supposed to be the 1995 THX VHS trilogy. Both Star Wars and Jedi are the THX mastered copies of the films, with the "One Last Time" trailers and the George Lucas interviews, but Empire appears to be an non-THX 1990 release. However, when looking at the label, it is identical to my father's THX copy of Empire- it has the THX logo, 1995 copyright date, etc.

I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this? To me, it seems when Fox was releasing this edition, an old tape was mislabeled as the new one.

Again, if this is the wrong place, please point to where I could get proper information on this issue.

4K restoration on Star Wars

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Lucasfilm restore the entire original film before doing the special edition CGI inserts? So they might have scanned the bits and pieces of the recomposited original effects stored somewhere, splice them into a video timeline and use that for an oot release?

Not ideal, but it's better than nothing.

On another note, can't wait for the Ep 2-3 4k 16 bit scans! Oh wait...

When they were restoring it they apparently pulled apart the negative, removing all of the optically composited shots, then cleaned up the background plates and the optical elements separately, then digitally recomposited the elements back onto a "new" negative.

A vast majority of people have access to bluray burners and blanks, and although more have DVD drives and burners, those people won't be left out either, as we will have the vast majority of formats, and types of media covered. One less will not make a huge impact on our plans.

Team Negative1

Glad to hear it. I don't have a Blu Ray burner or a Blu Ray player, so DVD is really my only option.

IMHO, you have not lived until you have sat through all three films from the 2004/2006 Pan n Scan DVD release. I still live in hope of a Blu Ray version!!!!

Blu-ray version of what exactly, the P&S versions the 2004 SE? and do you mean a full 1080p or 720p?

I might be alone on this, but I think a P&S version of the 2011 Blu Ray would be cool.

Alright, help me out guys.

It was brought to my attention that 3PO was in a different position during the wipe, but now taking a closer look, everyone is different. Was this a different take they used in the SE and put the original foreground over top? Was the foreground a composite element originally?

It looks like Luke is played by an entirely different person. On top he has no beard, but he does on the bottom- and it doesn't look like he's Obi Wan.

The blaster bit at the end had me doing a double take. Hilarious!

The majority of the changes seem to be color related, and some of the 2.0 color changes contradict the GOUT. What's your source for these changes?

He's basing the coloring of some parts off of another source that he believed better represented the coloring than the GOUT.

Lightscribe

Yeah, I am a huge fan of Lightscribe, but that technology is dead dead dead. The way to handle labeling from now on is to buy inkjet-printable discs and a compatible printer. Sorry, durable tech lost out to flashy fading colors.

What printer do you use? Are they  reasonably priced or more on the spendy side?

Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?
Time

This is just a guess, but I wonder if they release the OOT on BluRay for Christmas of 2015 to coincide with the release of Episode 7?  This movie is made for the OOT generation, so what better time to release the OOT?

I'm thinking the 40th anniversary is the most likely time. And in all likelihood, it will be a Fox release with no contribution from Disney, sort of like their way of saying "screw you" to Lucas for selling Star Wars to Disney. I also think it's likely that it will only be included in an expensive box set, possibly including the PT and the most recent cuts of the films.

I was wondering if anyone had some tips on how to create Lightscribe DVDs and where to find dual layer Lightscribe DVDs? I've searched around for them, but I know nothing about Lightscribe, so I'm unsure if there is a certain type of blank media I need to look for. Also: is there another method for getting labels onto a DVD?
