Yeah, this site gets pretty confusing where people state a perfectly reasonable opinion and all you get as a response is “what?”.

Reasonable?

Whether you agree or not, saying that you feel an actor turned in a weaker performance is a perfectly reasonable opinion, yes.

You sure?

You ok my friend?

Seems in character to me, that being a self admitted snide and rudely sarcastic poster by nature.

At least you got that I was joking, even though for some reason you felt like you had to be a dick about it (though I guess that’s in character for you).

How does pointing out that you’re being a dick through your self admitted snide and sarcastic posting nature make me a dick?

I’m fine, thanks for asking though. I’m wondering though, is it “are you ok” day where you are? 😉 We have that here in Australia in relation to addressing severe depression and suicide issues.

Are you ok Frink?

Also I agree with your earlier comment Frink, used to always think Collipso’s avatar was a green robot with grey robes on. That is until I looked closer one day 😉

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

I just don’t think it works in this movie. Seeing further destruction adds terror and emotional weight, which would actually be troublesome with how quickly the movie moves on.
It needs to be as it is- powerful, but brief and detached.

Agreed, plus they already add emotional weight a bit later on in the movie anyway when you see Obiwan suddenly affected and has to sit down, saying to Luke “I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror…and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.”

Shocker based on your laundry list of complaints with the TFA which basically amounted to “I don’t like it because it’s not exactly what I wanted it to be.”

Disagree. While some of the things he said were nitpicks (some even identified as such) he has some very valid complaints towards TFA.

Why would you want to go back in time and decide not to watch it? Just to save the 2 plus hours?

It’s not about 3 hours lost and you know it 😉 (if you include waiting to get in and then sitting through the adverts as well then it’s at least 3 hours).

I enjoyed the movie despite being extremely critical of it, but I would tell anyone to go watch it regardless, simply because it’s one of the most beautiful Star Wars movies if not the most beautiful one. Plus Hamill, plus several incredibly amazing scenes that are all stuck to a (unfortunately) not very good plot.

Being the most beatiful looking SW movie to date and witnessing an awesome performance by Mark (despite what they’ve done to his character) are two things I can definitely agree, but they’re pretty much the only nice things I have to say about the movie.

Unfortunately I was late getting to this thread but I would have said a definitive “No” based on my own feelings on TLJ (pretty much hated it) and from what you’ve said about TFA (which I pretty much agree with all of it despite mostly enjoying TFA).

Obviously you didn’t like TLJ either and like me, probably wish you could go back in time and decide to not watch it? I’d be interested to see a break down of your thoughts on TLJ like you did for TFA earlier in this thread, though you might need to post it still in the review thread due to the spoiler policy not being lifted till tomorrow on the 15th (going of the date of this post).

Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **

Good article about Ron Howard coming on (with a cool bit about Lucas)
http://ew.com/movies/2018/02/09/ron-howard-solo-a-star-wars-story/

Nice article, quite interesting and adds on nicely to what I’ve read so far in George Lucas’s biography “George Lucas - A Life”.

My reservations about the PT and the way he bastardised his own OT creations aside, it is an extremely interesting read and gives some great insights into his film making (even to how much of his own life events influenced his films) and how he came to be a writer and director at all instead of possibly a grease monkey (mechanic), a stationary store manager, a race car driver or a stain on the side of the road.

It’s also amazing to read about some of the people he collaborated and went through film school with that became big names in the industry themselves and other now well known names he rubbed shoulders with as started working in the film industry proper. I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in such stuff and I’m only 1/5 through in reading it myself 😉

Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **
Time

At first I was thinking that maybe the artist of that poster simply made a mistake, however taking a closer look at the teaser, the poster looks accurate to how the Falcon is in ‘Solo’ (what a boring movie title).

There is one very vague line I’ve pointed a red arrow at that may be where the docking mandibles (as we know them) end and the compartment filling the gap between them starts which I guess means that it not only fills the gap but extends onto the end of the mandibles themselves to give this more angular design that doesn’t have the iconic snub / flat ended mandibles, something like the below example:

New Star Wars films to be produced and written by D. Benioff & D.B. Weiss (Cancelled)
Time

http://www.starwars.com/news/game-of-thrones-creators-david-benioff-and-d-b-weiss-to-write-and-produce-a-new-series-of-star-wars-films

It was announced today that Benioff and Weiss, creators of the smash-hit, Emmy Award-winning television series Game of Thrones, will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

Yeah, that’s because Game of Thrones was actually written by George RR Martin. Nothing against these directors and that’s fine if Disney want them to write and produce new SW movies but give proper credit where it is due.

Game of Thrones’s success on TV is from Martin’s story and characters which these directors have done a great job in transitioning them to a TV series. But it’s pretty clear to me that the story and character quality started dropping of to a large degree when they started significantly diverging from the books in later series and then continuing to write the full story themselves after they passed where the books were up to.

Hearing about these two writing new SW movies doesn’t give me any additional confidence over other directors/writers that I’m not familiar with outside of that one piece of work, confidence in the new SW movies themselves being great with good stories and characters just because they had great books to directly reference for what they are now getting acclaim for. It’s just Disney doing their usual marketing thing by linking to their prior success of which the best parts are actually derived from someone else’s work…

Val

Edit: fixed my post to say “producing and writing” instead of “directing”.

tere are good explanations for most of them anyway.

There are explanations now that we’ve had ages to ponder them. Conversely, the novelization for TLJ isn’t even out yet.

The TFA novel straight up explains how the Starkiller beam could destroy a planet on the other side of the galaxy from where the base itself is located. It just depends on it you want to accept that explanation.

That is to say, you like the movie or you don’t, and that’s your choice. But holding ST and OT up to different yard sticks isn’t exactly fair.

We shouldn’t need novelizations to justify the events of a movie.

But as for different yardsticks, the Death Star was a moon sized space station with essentially a big version of a blaster that could blow up rocky planets. It required the resources of a galaxy-spanning empire to build.

Starkiller Base is a piece of construction many times larger than the Death Star, with a primary weapon requiring seemingly universe-breaking technology that has never been previously hinted at or explained, built by an organization that by all indications is a fraction the size of the Empire.

These are not two yardsticks.

Iteration is your answer.

The German Empire was defeated in WWI, the Nazi’s “rose from the ashes” and 20 years later the Third Reich invaded Poland and WWII began.

The engineering iteration upon the previous weapons, saw the war machine now employ cannon that could span the English channel, unmanned V2 bombs, U boats, and any number of other more advanced hardware (including ultimately nuclear weapons).

Pretty obvious that the First Order is based upon the hardware of the Empire (TIE Fighters, Star Destroyers, Stormtrooper armour, Starkiller Base, etc), and so iteration is your answer to why they are more advanced.

But that still doesn’t answer the question of why they were able to build a far more ambitious project with far less resources. If we saw that they used a robotic workforce and had a lot of automation for their fleet it would make sense, but we get no indication that it’s different from the Empire in this regard. Hux even says that it’s a machine ‘that you have built’. Yet another missed opportunity if you ask me.

Why do we need to see the First Order’s means of production? The only time we saw that before in Star Wars was in one of its most infamous scenes (“Shut me down, machines making machines”). We have no idea how they or the Empire did it so why should it matter?

In the OT trilogy there was no issue showing means of production, since the largest structure we saw was a part of the story’s table setting exposition and they never made anything more impressive than that.

For the prequels, we got a lengthy scene showing the creation of the Clone army, a scene of the droid factory (which was largely unnecessary since the droid army was also established at the beginning of the prequels), and in just GL’s prequels we got an explanation for how the Death Star was designed and saw it being constructed 20 years before it would be finished.

Say what you will about the prequels, it’s undeniable that they have enough rock salt.

That’s what the prequels did, explain things. Didn’t make the movies any better.

They’re not what made the movies bad and without them the movies would have been much worse again. That’s pretty erroneous to suggest having credible in movie explanations were somehow supposed to make up for completely unrelated issues that were the actual cause of the prequel failings.

If hyperspace is a fifth dimension, why would Han to worry about flying into a star are too close to a supernova?

This is why official canon is dumb. Just go by what you see on the screen.

What is wrong with official canon if it maintains consistency.

What I’m saying is that it fails at that most basic task, as I explain very clearly: the idea of hyperspace as a 5th dimension (not in the movies) contradicts what Han says IN THE MOVIE!

Oh ok, I take it you are talking about official canon out of the movie? If so then yeah that is stupid.

When thinking about official canon I’m usually only thinking from the point of view of what the movies show us anyway.

What is wrong with official canon if it maintains consistency and therefore believability throughout all movies referencing that canon? Not maintaining consistency on the other hand is actually dumb as it creates issues with the logic people have previously built around how such things work by what they were shown in previous movies.

Just going by what you see on screen is one of the many issues with TLJ, as it just expects you to go along with whatever it serves up with little to inadequate or no explanation as to why this is now allowed or works in this new way. For people who’s brains “checkout” when they sit down to a movie and just blindly accept whatever the movie shows them, this probably works though I’m sure many will process and think about things afterwards and suddenly think “hey, that doesn’t make sense!”.

But if your mind is actively processing what the movie is showing you in regards to your current knowledge and memory on such things, it is constantly going “um, what? how does that make any sense!?” and can be very distracting or even jarring when trying to watch the movie, aside from the fact that it detracts from it’s overall enjoyment. If this happens to core elements of a movie’s story, characters or canon then it can downright ruin the movie.
