kk650's Miscellaneous Regraded Films (Released)
Time

Just finished watching the regraded MoS and for the most part I loved it. My only "huh?" moments were some of the scenes that still had a very teal color to them. I didn't mind so much the underwater moments as I figure that makes sense there, but any scenes with the Army in their underground bunker (Superman in handcuffs for example), the teal was still there. Way too much to be a hiccup that got missed, so I'm assuming it was the editor's choice. My question is, why? TBH, those scenes were so teal that I'm guessing it was too much to try and change the color to anything else, be it blue, gray, or whatever. The only other nitpick I have is that some of the more darker scenes were still just as dark and I was hoping the brightness would've been upped just a tad.

But again, it was still a blast to watch this after having not seen it for about a year I think. It's made me curious to check out some other fan edits that have been done for MoS that change to plot/structure/sequences of scenes as well.

"The audience was literally moved to tears", that right there says a hell of alot about the importance of film preservation. Thanks poita

These are exciting times, i just hope we don't see the end of them.

Grown men actually cried during the screening. It is a beautiful thing, we have forgotten how cinema can move the soul I think.

I went to the movie theater last Saturday to see my favorite movie of all time, Rocky 4. There were at least 5 or 6 times where I had to contain myself. Right from the beginning when the boxing gloves rise into frame, to the epic moment when Rocky gets to the top of the mountain and screams Drago's name.

The problem is not with the teal, but the piss poor way it is implemented.

Glad you said that. For all my disdain for teal being blanketed all over everything, truth is, one of my favorite action sequences of all time is covered in teal. And I'm talking about the tunnel chase from The Terminator. Whether it's an old VHS tape or the current blu, that entire sequence is completely teal and I have no problem with it.

Help: looking for... The Land Before Time (1988) - full original uncut version

And especially if said prince will throw in the uncut Land Before Time taped off Finnish TV, along with some more missing Doctor Who episodes. And the 134-minute cut of Superman IV taped from Armed Forces Network in Korea. (Only people who were on Superman Cinema in 2001 will get that last one.)

I was on that site from around 2003-2013 so I must've missed that one lol.

More subtle than the others, but welcome.

Honestly, I see no effective difference in most of those T2 comparisons.  And even for the ones I do see a difference, I'm like, eh...

The difference can really be seen between this and the skynet edition. Skynet edition was a dnr mess whereas the Spanish edition bluray has the majority of grain and detail left intact.

Was gonna agree with Frink but I'm glad you said that :)

I LOVE the sound effects in the trailer. I wish they had kept them. It definitely is more "explosive" and IMo fits more in line with the first movie. Of course, Cameron's idea was to eventually do the opposite with the 5.1 Remix of part 1 :-(

Part of me wants to believe there is some release or bootleg out there that did have that soundtrack but it would have been known about by now.

I doubt it. But there's always hope. Someday someone may do a fan edit of T2 that makes it looks, sound, and overall feel like a sequel to part 1. Using some vhs video filters, old stock sound effects, and a new synth heavy score ;)

In searching for the above image, I found these 2 things of interest:

Note both the change in color timing , as well as a cropped image. Neither of these have the typical "blue" color timing this film is known for. Can anyone identify which versions these 2 possibly come from?

I'm interested in hearing the CDS mix. Can someone PM me that mix? I don't come 'round here often.

The CDS mix is featured on the very first R1 DVD release in Dolby Digital 5.1 from 1997.

Are you sure you don't mean 1998? I have an R1 DVD with that year on the packaging:

Notice how the "Live" image is NOT in the bottom right corner?

Top Gun was and always will be one of my favorite movies. Definitely watched it over 500 times over my life. Here's the problem though. The VHS tape aspect ratio was the entire image. So now the so called "widescreen" versions show less. Being the film is about about supersonic jets, I can't imagine why they'd cover up like 30% of the image. The image is so burned in my head that I simply can't watch any dvd/blu-ray release, regardless of how good it looks lol.

So as ridiculous as this sounds, the only preservation I'd like to see is the best picture quality possible from the "full scope" (or whatever) version lol.

And a release of Faltermeyer's entire score would be very nice to :D

Interesting stuff!  To be honest though, I can't imagine the strip club scene without the Madonna track playing.  That just seems to go together too well!

Lol I hear ya. I'd imagine in 1984 Madonna was probably the only music strippers wanted to dance to. I can imagine a lot of the older gentlemen at the time who didn't care for her music must've absolutely hated it lol.

That's quite an extensive list of differences, what did you use for comparison?  Have you just seen the film enough times that you remembered hearing the original numbers, or did you do a direct comparison to a prior release?  I'm quite surprised at the number of differences you've listed.  I wasn't familiar enough with the film to pick things like that out, so it's interesting to hear about.

There used to be an old vhs rip of the film on youtube that had the different music portions. I'm a big Van Halen fan so I pretty much memorized all those cues. There may be even more differences, but I'm not 100% sure. Madonna's "Burnin' Up" plays during the strip club scene, and for all I know there may have been different music there to.

Funny thing is, after figuring that Eddie did the score to the movie first, and that these cues were replaced later (this blu-ray release was actually on cable a few times a few years ago. I caught it at like 2:30am and wrote some notes down regarding the music), someone later told me that the way the music is presented in this release IS how it was done originally, and that the music rights/issues came later for the vhs, and the other Van Halen cues were quickly added in for the vhs release.

Who knows? Either way, I still prefer hearing all the Van Halen stuff.

I'm in the middle of watching this and wanted to point something out real quick. Some of the Van Halen musical cues are either replaced with alternate music or there's no music at all.

- When Chris Penn jumps out the window, the music from Back to the Future isn't heard until he's driving away. So we don't hear those notes like we do in the BTTF scene.

- The music when Lea Thompson and her friend are driving is missing (after Lea finds out the cop she's been seeing is married). Oddly enough, we do hear the piece at the end of the film when Chris Penn gets back with his girl. So as to why it's missing in this scene is a real ???

- The Van Halen demo of "Mine all mine" during the scene when the kid almost runs over Jim with his car is replaced with a Hendrix song.

- During the party scene, the demo of "A.F.U. (Naturally Wired) isn't heard until the last segment of the scene. There's alternate music instead. One song sounds like Prince, and one of the earlier Van Halen demos is heard instead.

Sorry for nitpicking. I know this movie is technically unavailable and i should be happy that this release was made (and believe me, as an 80's nut I am BEYOND grateful), but as a Van Halen fan, I miss hearing those cues. Though for the few that are interested in hearing them, the score pieces are on youtube now in their full form :)

Superman II, The Richard Donner Cut - Minimal Essential Edit (Released)

I once tried to create a widescreen hybrid based on the RIC, but my head exploded.

The deleted scenes on the Richard Donner Cut shows some of the RIC footage in widescreen. So a print does exist somewhere. I'd love to see it. Of course, I'd love if they simply remastered it to lol.

Check out Booshman's S2 HD redux page over on fanedit.org. He took the audio and rotoscoped some footage from the RIC to give us the full scenes when Superman and Lois talk at the end after they leave the fortress of solitude. The first kiss scene outside the fortress, and the balcony goodbye scene right after. It was so nice to hear those music cues again. They work so much better than just lazily re-using the Williams score (as Thau did).

Superman II, The Richard Donner Cut - Minimal Essential Edit (Released)
Time

Superman 2 was the movie that got my interseted in fan editing. But i gotta be honest, after seeing 15-20 edits at this point, I'm pretty much burnt out lol. Booshman is still working on his edit, and with his VFX skills, I'm still very excited to see what he's got in store. Plus there's a lot of edit ideas I've been sitting on for years that, thankfully, Booshman likes and has been incorporating into his edit (at this point I don't care if my name doesn't appear under the title, just that these ideas come to fruition).

Plus for me, the Donner Cut got so many things wrong that I think a 50/50 of both versions, plus new ideas to correct things that are wrong in both versions, is the only way to go. Since that's what fans like myself had been asking for in the first place thanks to the tv edit of the film which was really that 50/50 balance all along.

I apologize if my comments aren't what you wanna hear, but I've gotta leave for work soon and don't have time to really put my thoughts into your cut list, but FWIW, at this point, not having video effects skills really hinders what can be done to fix this movie, that hasn't been done already by other editors (including myself, so don't think I'm pointing fingers).
