4k77 - reel by reel color grading (Released)
Time

I am grabbing the release over on the organ. I see that there is currently no plan to release a 4K version of this. I must say, I’m a little disappointed. I understand, but you know, 4K, man! 😉

Awesome work, Dre. Can’t wait to watch through it this weekend.

I feel you, but there just isn’t any additional picture detail you get at 4K vs the effort required to work with such large filesizes.

Give me a scan of the negative and I’d change my mind immediately. 😀

Is Star Wars "Better Than It's Ever Been"?
Time

Can’t agree at all. To me the best time for the series was the 90s, before TPM was released.

Why?

You had the OT on video in their original forms and at a good standard for VHS at the time. You could watch them whenever you wanted.

The Thrawn Trilogy of books were released, expanding the story beyond ROTJ.

You had wonderful and original Star Wars games being produced directly by LucasArts - Dark Forces, Rebel Assault, X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, X-Wing Alliance, Shadows of the Empire, Rogue Squadron, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 to name a few.

Star Wars didn’t saturate the market and fans only understood the Star Wars brand to represent QUALITY! So every time a new piece of content was released you were excited and it lived up to your expectations.

Then the 97SEs were released and even though some of the changes sucked, you could watch the OT at the cinema again!

Then it went downhill from when TPM was released. Star Wars merch saturated the market, the prequels sucked, LucasArts outsourced all their game development resulting in a massive drop in quality (with the exception of KOTOR and KOTOR2) and there were just too many crappy books being written with pretty much all content outside of the new films being focused on the PT and not the OT. Then Disney bought Star Wars and frankly they have just provided more sub par content at an exhaustive rate of release.

I will caveat this by saying that I really love Star Wars Rebels. But that’s it.

I understand people’s love for the time when the OT was first released in cinemas (I was a bit young to experience it). But during the 80s, the films were literally the only Star Wars content available.

The 90s ruled for Star Wars.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

Wow. One of the few times I’ve ventured out of the preservations section and saw this thread.

Here’s my rankings:

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
  2. Star Wars
  3. Return of the Jedi
  4. All other Star Wars films

Seriously, arguing over the merits of which of the films post ROTJ are more mediocre than the other is such a waste of energy.

The best stories post ROTJ have come from the EU in books, games and comics (though there has been a lot of terrible stuff too in the EU). Rebels was pretty great too.

But as far as films go, every one post ROTJ has been disappointing, just to different degrees. For me the sequel trilogy films have been the worst. Mainly because I can see the unrealised potential squandered in them.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

No need to get so defensive towne32. I posed a question not a criticism and professed my love for DeEds. I’m not trying to start a 4k77 vs DeEd debate, and at no point did I suggest that TESB and ROTJ DeEds were redundant. I asked if it were worth working on these films ahead of Star Wars.

Maybe you should reread my posts and calm down keyboard warrior.

It’s a valid question - massive effort versus potentially diminishing return on Star Wars. If Harmy deems it worthwhile working on SW first ahead of TESB and ROTJ then he has my support.

And to your point about dirt/scratches etc, I would argue that these flaws outweigh the extreme sharpening and poor DNR on the bluray that removed a lot of detail.

I have to politely disagree with you there.

The bluray doesn’t contain any more detail than 4k77 with the exception of the area of the image that was cropped. The bluray is heavily sharpened which gives the illusion of additional detail but not any actual additional picture information.

I’ve sharpened the 4k77 footage myself as an experiment and it can be sharpened to match the bluray exactly.

So my question stands.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Hi Harmy,

I hope I’m not offending you by asking this, but I was wondering if doing a 3.0 1080p version of Despecialized for Star Wars has become redundant now that 4k77 has been released?

There is a DNR version of 4k77 about to released followed shortly after by color corrections which would effectively present a bluray quality color accurate release of Star Wars at 1080p.

Understanding the massive effort that you put into the DeEds of the original trilogy, would your time and efforts not be better spent on TESB and ROTJ Despecialized 3.0 instead?

With the exception of gaining some additional screen that has been cropped from 4k77, what other benefits do you see a DeEd 3.0 of Star Wars having over 4k77.

Again, not trying to rude as I’m a massive fan of your work. Just curious.
