Alternate camera angles in ROTJ Kenobi/Luke scene on Dagobah?
Time

For a couple years when I was a teen, the only Star Wars movie I had was ROTJ, which someone in my family taped off network TV sometime in the late 80s or early 90s.  From 1993 until 1995 (when I got the "longbox" VHS set), I probably watched this tape 30 or 40 times.

When I got the set in 1995, I immediately noticed that there were some differences in the Kenobi/Luke scene on Dagobah.  From what I remember, several shots of Kenobi used different camera angles from the TV version.  Otherwise, the dialogue and everything else was the same.

Unfortunately, I don't have a shred of evidence to back me up as that tape is long gone, but it's something I've always wondered about.  So, I'm just wondering if this has been documented somewhere, and if there's a reason for the differences, how they came about etc.

Also, how do people refer to the 1995 VHS set (pictured)?  I've always called it "longbox."  Is this what people call the "faces" set?

Interesting side note: the TV version was also edited for time.  The entire 3PO/R2D2/droid torture scene is missing.  So it wasn't until 1995 that I finally saw it.  I'm so used to it not being there, that it completely takes me out of the movie and ruins the pacing for me (but that could just be because it's an awful scene anyway).

Also, the Death Star looks purple in several shots.

Star Wars 1313 Discussion

Eh, it looks ok, but doesn't really grab me.  Based on the footage released so far, I don't think I'd figure out on my own that it was actually based in the Star Wars universe.  There's the Millenium Falcon cockpit door frame, and I guess the ship looks a little like a Corellian corvette, but other than that...

I'll probably give it a rent, though I don't really care for 3rd-person shooters.  I'm just glad there's an OT-era game finally getting released again.

I wish they'd make another X-Wing or Dark Forces.  Those made me fall in love with Star Wars again as a teen.  Another Rebel Assault rail shooter would also be awesome.

The legend is gone - Ralph McQuarrie 3/3/12

I like the fact that some of the images are so different from the finished films--- they're fun to look at as "alternate" visions of the trilogy.

This may sound a little crazy, but I often fantasize about someone remaking Star Wars, but doing so with these "alternate" visions.  Ie, remake the movie, but make the visuals as close to these McQuarrie illustrations as possible.  Most important, try to get the feel.  And of course, use some of the early scripts/story elements that I've been reading about in Secret History of Star Wars (amazing book!), which are absolutely fascinating to me.  There are so many story versions with so many differences it's enough to make my head spin, but eg, have Father Skywalker and Vader be two different people.*  I don't know if anyone could ever possibly pull something like this off better than I picture it in my head, but man it would be cool.  Maybe it would work as an animated feature?

So cool, in fact, Kotobukiya made a statue of it:

Yes!  I think it's so cool that they also made action figures based on the McQuarrie illustrations!  http://www.sandtroopers.com/sandwatch/mcquarrie/  Beautiful work.

*(insane footnote about me: Star Wars is by far my favorite of the movies.  And I love ESB, but I truly think the SW trilogy could have been so much more interesting, and could have shown us a much larger universe, if Vader was NOT Luke's father.  When I watch Star Wars, I often pretend they are not related.  I find it more enjoyable, but I am a weirdo).

Did the prequels have boring visuals?
Time

Yeah, I pretty much agree.  Even though there are "grand" visuals as you said, there's not much that really stands out and is memorable to me.  I feel like the design of most objects are ok, but nothing special.  Droids, ships, weapons, environments, etc are just "meh."  There's nothing really iconic (to me, anyway).

I find myself watching the PT webisodes every now and then because I'm curious as to what the process was going into these movies, and where things went wrong (I know, strange thing to waste my time on considering I don't enjoy the PT at all, but...).  I'm probably reading way too much into this, but I find this quote from design director Dough Chiang re: the design of Star Wars to be telling:

When I saw Star Wars, I was really blown away but I was actually kinda like, hmm, there are certain things that I didn't like about it.  But the great thing was I went home and I kinda drew, you know, my version of the X-Wing.

My view as a diehard OT fan is, what's NOT to like about the design of Star Wars?  Especially the X-Wing!  I'm not saying you have to like everything about the design- but it seems to me you'd want someone who loved damn near everything, to try to stay consistent with the OT.

Of course innovation and thinking for yourself is very important; you don't just want someone to copy existing designs and have everything look derivative, but you do want some consistency of design.  But I don't think I'm explaining myself very well.  I guess what I'm trying to say is, based on that quote, it sounds like Chiang didn't quite like the OT design very much; no wonder WE don't like what ended up in the PT.  If that makes any sense.

The quote starts about a minute into the video:

That's a damn shame.  I agree with zombie, I think Ralph's contributions to SW are immense, and vastly underrated by many.  His illustrations are phenomenal.  I mean, he is pretty much responsible for the look of SW!

These two images in particular... I dunno, when I look at them, they take me somewhere special, a place even more fantastic and unimaginable than the movies themselves do...  I can't put into words how they make me feel...
