4K restoration on Star Wars

Nah it is but it intercuts with Lambert listening on the Intercom and Parker in the Corridor.

There is one shot in the trailer that proves that a part was filmed which has Ripley running through the smoke.

The Box Alien as you call it is just moved to the ending sequence instead of the failed attempt. You can see the airlock behind the box Alien.

This happens quite a lot of old films from the 70’s including Star Wars, moving shots about into other locations like R2-D2 on the death Star shots spliced ib when he is flying through Space on the millennium falcon.

It is easy enough to sort the chess game out then Later C3P0 tangled in the wires aboard the tantive cuts to R2D2 on the death star again laughing… If ypu were going to do a special edition that is a worthy cause for changing something or making it work.

The Alien corridor outtake footage is not from the deleted Parker, Ripley & Lambert air lock scene repurposed.

A B/W workprint exists that composer, Jerry Goldsmith used to score the film. Originally, Ripley got a good look at the creature when she turned the corner, seeing it squatting, she ducks back behind the wall and has a SECOND PEEK. The Alien has already risen to its feet, sensing Ripley, it turns in her direction as she ducks back and edges away from the corridor, dropping Jones.

Watch the THE BEAST WITHIN: THE MAKING OF ALIEN documentary and you will find an outtake of the adult Alien hunkered in profile as the camera (Ripley’s POV) rounds the corner and sees it.

You can see the air lock behind the Alien in the corridor as it swings around in the final film. You are meant to see the air lock - just beyond it is the shuttle.

A strong clue, being the emergency lighting and smoke used in the shots of the Alien in the corridor - naturally, as these deleted shots occur during the 10 mins countdown.

Sounds good on the surface but the edit of the alien in the corridor doung that squat move is part of the Ripley trying to blow the alien out the airlock the first time and was an unfinished sequence…

The footage of the Alien squatting in the corridor (Box Alien?) is an outtake from this (later) sequence: Ripley heads towards the shuttle (after setting the self-destruct), bumping into the creature, she drops the container carrying Jones and rushes back to engineering, to stop the 10 mins countdown.

It’s not from the earlier deleted scene where Parker, Ripley & Lambert almost succeed in trapping the Alien in the air lock - which ends with Ripley’s nosebleed.

That is correct…

My Top 10 that need something done…Re-Edit and Restore

1.An American Werewolf in London*

2.Conan The Barbarian

3.Star Wars (A New Hope)

4.Enter the Dragon

5.Apocalypse Now! (Still pending the Apocalypse)

6.Total Recall uncensored*

7.Dune David Lynch Directors Cut

8.Gladiator Uncensored version

9.Alien Further Extended and Uncensored

10.Stargate Extended and uncensored with completed special effects

*Never had alternate version

I Can dream though… Let’s face it. I’m still not Happy with most of the re-cuts that these films already had and this is the main Reason why it is important to always keep the theatrical versions. you always have that to go back to.

Star Wars stands out as a totally different beast to these films though.

Highlander would be 11th but it’s no biggie over the rest of these.

Raiders of the Lost Ark would be 12th but again it’s done well but it’s a tease on some deleted scenes.

13th Would be Jaws for the Alex Kitner Death Censorship amongst music cues removed and stuff.

Essentially when a alternate cut and deleted scenes surface or you know about what is missing you can get a syndrome about it some what, and It can be hard to shake off… But only on films of huge magnitude with amazing artistic merit.

I think the deleted footage from AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON is lost to time. I would love to see an extended cut with the three hobos mauled by the werewolf, but it looks like an impossible dream, sadly.

ALIEN, is another I would be thrilled to see extended. It very nearly happened! An extended cut was prepared with EVERYTHING back in - including previously unseen material - this version, I believe, was put together by Charles de Lauzirika.
The film’s director, Ridley Scott, viewed it and thought it was too long. He then came up with a compromise - ALIEN: THE DIRECTOR’S CUT - which contained very little added material but many edits made to the film and augmented with CGI.
I hope the original edit by Charles de Lauzirika still exists and will be released as bonus material one day.

An extended edit for JAWS will never happen, I think, as the director is satisfied with the film as is.

“All the anger and bitterness could have been easily avoided”

Definitely, but on the other hand, it’s not his fault people are being like that. People are in control of their own behaviors and reactions, and people don’t HAVE to be assholes about it. And their asshole behavior isn’t justified at all. I just don’t agree with “He brought it on himself” or “he deserves it.” Very few people deserve to be treated so poorly, and people shouldn’t really want to act that way - especially not to someone none of us even know or have ever met, and especially not over something as ultimately small-stakes as a movie.

You can want these things released in a pretty big way, without taking it that personally.

Lucas would have known that burying the originals would cause upset - even anger from long-time fans. Yes, people are ultimately responsible for their own behaviour as Lucas is.
He knew doing this would incite anger from a section of STAR WARS fandom.

If he’s so upset about the way he’s being treated by people (regarding the unaltered films) then release them in a state that is fit to be viewed in the 21st century. Instead, he’s hurt when people (rightfully) tear apart his prequels, selling everything off, washing his hands of the whole matter. Now DISNEY have gotten their hooks into his ‘baby’ and are showing it even less respect.

STAR WARS has been systematically trashed since 1997 and the end is nowhere in sight.

But this weird sort of neverending anger and bitterness towards Lucas also sucks.

All the anger and bitterness could have been easily avoided if he released the originals alongside his preferred SEs. Sure he gave us STAR WARS - then takes it back - arrogantly assuming fans will accept his ‘improved’ versions without complaint - nor caring if they do complain. He brought it on himself.

Sadly, he’ll never wise up, and it seems DISNEY won’t release them either.

I’ll be saving myself $250.00 - or whatever the absurd amount is for next year’s 4K set - unless the unaltered versions are included - highly unlikely.

“Own the originals last time” was 1995. The prequels wouldn’t come out for another 4 years.

He went back on that anyway 10 years later.

The 2006 disc release was bonus material and hardly an acceptable way in which to view the unaltered versions.

The 40th anniversary celebrations was the perfect opportunity to release them - or even just the first film. Yet he (and DISNEY) chose not to.

The new 4K set may prove to be as disappointing as the last two sets (2004 & 2011) for fans of the OUT.

Does anyone know WHY Lucas stubbornly clings to his decision? Is he embarrassed about the original release or is he just being that controlling of his creation? or is it something else?

I find his decision to date quite puzzling on the surface of it.

Spite. He’s pissed the fans didn’t take to his prequels the way they did the original films. So he denies them the originals they hold dear. That’s my take.

He also believes the original versions came up short (for whatever reasons) and wants to improve them, but that’s no excuse for trying to bury them. All versions can coexist as other box sets (CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, ALIEN, BLADE RUNNER, etc) have demonstrated.

Doctor Who Edit Ideas

I recently completed an extended edit of EARTHSHOCK. Using most of the bonus filmed material from part one and colour correcting it, the special sounds audio effects from the photo gallery slide show came in very handy.

The video conversion software I used wouldn’t allow me to rip the new CGI effects, so I used the original 1982 version to work from.

All four parts have been edited together, removing the cliffhangers. I also got rid of the (corny) silent end credits (Adric doesn’t deserve it) and replaced it with the part three end credits.

I gave it a new colour grading - getting rid of the piss-yellow cast and making the Cybermen a more metallic grey-silver.

Disney revises and buries the original versions of their own films without reservation. It’s laughable to believe they would approach Star Wars any differently.

And this is why I’m boycotting Disney. It’s not merely because I hate the ST; it’s due to everything they do, their approach towards filmmaking and film preservation and copyright in general. All corporations are evil, but Disney’s a breed apart, and I won’t feed that godless abomination a single non-circulating Canadian penny.

Now the bastards own ALIEN. I’m terrified the original materials will be buried in their black archive for good.

It’s kind of weird that the movie that establishes Vader as Luke’s father (albeit perhaps a clone thereof or something) also features an extreme uptick in him Force-choking officers to death.

I blame George Lucas & Larry Kasdan reacting to the mild-mannered Vader of Leigh Brackett’s draft, where he dismisses officers who fail him with mild reproofs like “Leave me, you incompetent idiot.”

Replacing the (bad) dialogue with something much more frightening (telekinetic strangulations) was the right move.

I wish the deleted scene from RETURN OF THE JEDI made the final cut, the one with Vader almost killing the cheeky little sh*t officer that prevents him from seeing the Emperor.

Qui-Gon Jinn wasn’t necessary. All that was needed was Obi-wan and Anakin. The prequels could have begun with them already Master and apprentice, building their bond right from the beginning of Ep. 1 - instead of pissing away the first chapter on a little boy and his mom.

Obi-Wan should have been older, and already a Jedi Master in Ep. 1, and Anakin, a teenager not a small boy.

Lucas traveled too far back into Anakin’s past for the prequels. We could have been spared all the childish crap that swamped Ep. 1.

Empire of Dreams is different. I don’t have a comprehensive list but the one example I know of for sure is that the Anthony Daniels is talking about George waddling during the filming of ROTJ and they walk up to Jabba’s palace they replaced the original shot with the 2011 shot with the expanded door.

JEDIT:
One other obvious change is when they talk about Williams recording the music for ANH they replaced the original shots with the SE shots. It seems whenever they show clips from the movie it’s all the 2011 master

That makes me think the unaltered originals will NEVER see an official release again.

Well, add another section to the George Lucas Unreliable Narrator thread. He’s done it. He’s won. He’s successfully rewritten history.

This day just gets weirder and weirder for me. So mixed on it all. Loving The Mandalorian, appreciating the better colors of the movies in 4K HDR, but now there are brand new tweaks and losing hope of ever seeing an official unaltered release.

I can’t believe no one in control cares.

One day a film historian will write a book about one man’s madness and the trashing of a beloved trilogy of films. I predict it will be a bestseller.

I can’t believe this craziness has been allowed to continue. Thank Christ the nutter has nothing to do with my two favourites (JAWS & ALIEN).

As long as the fool is breathing, you can forget about the original versions.

cool project

I saw this in 35mm as well as on two different digital projectors back in '99, including what might have been the first commercial digital projection of any film in the world.

Contrary to all the net rage, theaters were packed and people generally seemed pretty happy and were NOT all laughing, raging, etc. decent bit of clapping at the end at many showings.

And for AOTC, people were racing out of the earlier showings, smiling, giving thumbs up to people still on line, saying it was awesome, audiences erupted into cheers at the end. Again, contrary to all the hate you hear coming form the net crowd.

Probably still high from the movie they just saw. After a few days of reflection (and repeat viewings) the cracks start to appear, not long after, they’re ripping the film’s a new a-hole (deservedly so).
