This is true…but even if a film’s meaning/story ect is very hard to grasp shouldn’t completely negate the quality of that story/meaning ect…
You need to be able to separate between a failure to execute on your ideas and ideas that are a failure.

And I think that most SW fans realize that the prequels are not without any merits. There is some really good subtext in those movies, some very well thought out parallels, and it did a great job expanding and exploring that universe (even if you dislike the creative decisions, like myself). I’ll even go so far as to say that they were all very well structured movies, and they worked together as a trilogy.

But those things alone don’t make a good movie IMO. My issues lie almost solely with execution; the dialogue, the direction, much of the acting, the creative choices, etc. These elements just prevent me from truly enjoying these movies.

And that’s coming from someone who learned to love Star Wars through the prequels. I had seen the original trilogy a few times, but it wasn’t until the prequels that I became a SW fanatic. And that then turned me into a film fanatic. But now, 17 years since the release of TPM, I am equally as passionate about the OT as I was about the prequel films which hooked me. And I can see now that the PT has flaws which I have trouble overlooking, and to me they no longer hold up.

I accept them for what they are and for the role they play in canon. And I even admit that the current EU is doing a great job of both establishing the transition and connections between the two trilogies. But to me they just aren’t very good movies. But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy some of what they have to offer.

Cheers

I pretty much completely agree with you, very well said!
I just often see a lot of angry people who have a serious vendetta against these movies and incessantly hate on almost every aspect of them. To me if someone tries to do something for you, you should never then repay them with endless hate no matter the end result!

The Fifth Element (1997)

Wild, wacky and oddly sexual. It’s goofy and silly, but retains a definitive charm. The action and editing was quite solid and the characters were never boring. A fun sci-fi romp which certainly isn’t bogged down by any hint of seriousness.

Only God Forgives (2013)

Stunningly beautiful. I think this is the best looking film I’ve ever seen. The strength of the atmosphere and mood was phenomenal – Cliff Martinez’s soundtrack was even possibly better than his work on Drive. But boy do you ever have to work hard to get anything more from the movie. This is the ULTIMATE style over substance film. There’s loads of symbolism to digest and a decent amount of it is easy to see…but to understand and generate meaning from? You almost need a cheat-sheet or guidebook to read while watching!

Drive (2011)

Such a great movie. This was my second time around and I think I enjoyed it more, not being slightly overwhelmed by the violence like I was in my first viewing. So many sequences and elements this film are almost tailor made for me. I love how ultra-stylish many of the shots and scenes are, how well the music compliments the visuals, how cool Gosling is, how relaxed and long a load of shots are, how tightly paced it is, how pure the romance is, how moody the atmosphere is…my only complaints are that the dialog is a tad clunky and that it lacks some emotional impact towards the end.

I think I had a similar reaction to your first one when I saw this in the theater. Perhaps I should revisit this one soon.

Yeah, it’s definitely worth another go! 😃

DRIVE SPOILERS

It’s hilarious/amazing just how powerfully the motel scene was burnt into my mind. The shot were the woman has her head blown off I remembered as a roughly 8 second slow motion shot, where you could see the killer slowly come into frame, aim the gun, fire, then the this woman’s head just explodes and splatters all over the bathroom…but in reality the actual headshot-shot is barely a second long and over before you know it!

…because Bane wasn’t portrayed in a similar way. Vader didn’t cry about Palpatine like Bane cried about Talia. Vader actually wanted to rule the galaxy. Bane didn’t actually have any goals for himself, he only cared about Talia. The entire film built up Bane: the self-righteous agent of judgement, and the finale gave us Bane: he-likes-a girl-and-that’s-his-entire-character.

I felt it gave Bane an instant humanization and a heap more depth as a character. Once that whole flashback scenes ends you go from looking at Bane as a back breaking beast to a dedicated and selfless guy. I don’t think it undermined his character but added to it.

Moon (2009)

I couldn’t really get properly into or fully connect with this film. It’s partially my own fault, I wasn’t too feeling well when I was watching it so I was in a spaced out, passive mood – plus I had the movie’s main plot points spoiled so I wasn’t actively engaged in the mystery so in the end it never fully clicked with me emotionally.

That being said, it was good. The interactions between characters were well handled and the mood surprisingly veered into the horrific and oppressive once or twice. You easily buy the intense suffering Sam’s undergoing. Overall it’s a solid sci-fi flick that’s well produced (apart from some ps2 level cgi) with a good story and performances.

For me Duncan Jones is 2 for 2. Still haven’t seen Warcraft though…

Are you gonna smash the hot blue alien chick so hard?

Not as hard as Daisy but the blue alien chick is sexy as hell.

Someday, when (if) you grow up, you will (might) look back in shame at your posts (probably not).

I’m proud to appreciate the beauty of women. I basically used such strong terms in describing Ridleys hotness to counteract the equally harsh words of Malastrana towards Ridley. Me and Haseo are defending the beauty of a wonderful actress because Malastrana was being very rude to her. Daisy deserves best.

Daisy does deserve best - but saying you want to “smash” someone “so hard” is an extremely aggressive and crude thing to say. Lets be honest, you can’t justify your words with ‘appreciating women’s beauty’.
No shot at you Darthrush, just your words!

Honestly no offense taken my brutha 😉 I had some crude language to say myself in response to how much of a asshole Malastrana was acting like when it came to Daisy Ridley. I understand he doesnt like the film but he didn’t have to personally attack a beautiful, professional and genuinely dedicated person in the Star Wars mix such as Daisy. If out of the blue I wanted to properly appreciate Daisy I would put it elegantly and respectfully but when someone starts Bitchin about Daisys “bad looks” then I come back maybe a little too angry with fighting words.

I do sincerely apolgize for my choice of words. I just hope we can all agree on the fact that Daisy truly is one of the best in the business. Even John Williams said the main reason he’s returning to score episode 8 is because of Daisy.

Oh good 😃 I think we’re all on the same page now! And yes, can’t wait for more Daisy in the years to come…
Hahah, I think Williams just knows that Rey’s Theme is easily the best motif he has to work with for the next soundtracks 😉

I guess it comes down to how seriously you think the films take themselves and how seriously you then accordingly judge them.

To me you can really enjoy such a film as Death Proof but you have go in knowing it’s going to a direct re-creation/homage to trashy, low budget grindhouse films with some car exploitation elements thrown in there for good measure. The movie nails that brief and is a great movie in the context of that genre - but that doesn’t make it a ‘good’ movie out of that context.

I think the F&F movies are trying their hardest to be a super sylish and uber cool films so I judge them pretty harshly.

But I won’t pretend like I didn’t have fun watching them - I just think you can do a lot better, even if you’re looking for a fun oriented popcorn munchers.

Not as bad as I thought they would be.

I was surprised by how stupid the F&F movies really were. 5 was a fairly solid movie but I find them all just to be bunch of (mostly) not-so-tough men posturing about, pretending they’re so cool and hardcore.

Big Trouble in Little China

Went in knowing it was probably going to be a little silly but still wasn’t expecting all the supernatural elements! I did quite enjoy the whole adventure with the exception of a couple extreme cringe dialog moments. I thought the sets were quite good, immersed me in the unnerving, odd underworld-world and gave a good relief payoff once the gang (with the exception of the Euro green eyes girl) broke free. Overall a good unashamed adventure.

Yes. All shots are being corrected to the screener, except for maybe the prologue which could use the BB Prologue’s colors. There will be a version with all the full, un-cropped, IMAX shots taken from the special edition and full-screen DVD.

Thanks for that, sounds awesome! I’ve only been able to see the iTunes version of the film with no IMAX at all so looking forward hopefully seeing this at some point! 😃
