More prologue thoughts...

Maybe a classical piece of music would work since a big screen version of the TOS theme aside from the 2009 version doesn't really exist. "Jupiter" by Gustav Holst might work if you use the right bits from it.

Inspired by my favorite DC Comics TOS story about the end of the five year mission, I thought it would be really neat to have Decker board the ship at the very end of the montage. (In the comic, he was a Starfleet liaison officer, and already sporting the TMP uniform.)

Use footage of the Redshirt Honor Guard from "Journey To Babel", and somehow put Decker behind the shuttlecraft doors when they open.  (Kirk Spock and McCoy are in dress uniforms in these shots.) Use a closeup of the doors opening from "The Galileo Seven" to reveal Decker, then cutting to Kirk's closeup from Babel, as he now has second thoughts about handing over the Enterprise. We'd only need to see Decker for a second . ;)

This is the closest thing to a happy photo of younger William Windom I can find at the moment.

A black and white photo would be acceptable as a last resort, as Kirk had one of David in TUC. :)

One could put a few frames of Borg imagery into Spock's mindmeld with V'Ger?

I saw the Enterprise episode "Unexpected" on SciFi today, and there is a nice Klingon D7 lookalike in it. The engine nacelles have a blue glow though.

Here is another crazy idea I had last night. Decker should have some personal effects in the captain's quarters to make them look less sterile.  (Presuming Kirk gets them temporarily, and Decker has not had time to remove anything yet.) A picture of his father, the late Commodore Decker, would be a nice touch.

Matt Decker doesn't look his best in "The Doomsday Machine", but maybe a headshot of clean shaven, happy William Windom could be put into a TOS uniform?

Changing the shape of the viewscreen would certainly help. (Maybe add the famous scrolling blinky lights to the bottom of it as well?)

Add some directional signage to the wall panels if possible. The TMP peel off graphics book is a good source of these. I think the people making the 2009 movie had a copy. ;)

Change the color of the glowy turbolift tubes too...

The bridge got a second turbolift in TAS, (on the left of the viewscreen) but I've no idea how you'd add that in. ;)

Could the viewscreens on the bridge stations have some moving graphics added? (As was done with the Defiant on Enterprise.) Maybe a graphic timer counting down to shutdown of life support and other systems.

The TOS footage could even be windowboxed, (ala the tv scenes in Galaxy Quest when it was shown in theaters) then you open up to the full theatrical aspect ratio.

Another scene from "This Side of Paradise", where a smiling Uhura informs Kirk she's disabled communications, and then leaves the bridge might also work in that montage. :)

I really like the idea of seeing the ship return home at the end of the 5 year mission.

Could Kirk's final log entry V.O. from TUC be reworked for this?

As much as I would like to see that as well, you would then expect to see everyone in TOS form getting off the ship and some kind of scene implying that they're going their separate ways for a bit while the ship gets refit.  That will be very difficult if not impossible to create from TOS footage.

Well, there are plenty of shots of the crew lining up to beam off the ship in "This side of Paradise", plus shots of Kirk packing his belongings. There's also shots of Kirk alone on the bridge. "The Mark of Gideon" also has Kirk wandering an empty ship, but mixing shots of first and second season Shatner would be pretty tricky!

A shot of Spock brooding in his quarters alone from "Amok Time" could emphasize his leaving Starfleet and his comrades. "The Ultimate Computer" has shots of the empty Enterprise corridors going dark. "The Omega Glory" also has some deserted starship shots sans dissolved Exter crewmen. ;)

There are enough shots in other episodes that in a montage could portray a tired, yet happy crew arriving home.

I also remembered something I thought of several years ago. It would have been cool to see a corridor or other area on the ship still in transition from TOS to the movie look. (Since they rushed her out of spacedock to intercept V'Ger.) But I guess such a shot would be impossible to achieve?

Discussion: Another... FAIL Star Wars Toys Review
Time

Maybe not, but speaking from personal experience, collectors will sell their stuff to pay the bills if need be. My only real regret is it was several years before Ebay!

I sometimes wish for some sort of reality show, in which grown up collectors confront their parents or siblings with the current value of the stuff they threw out, or destroyed when the collectors were kids. It would make Jerry Springer look like a church picnic! ;)

His final words in that review are, "How pathetic is this?" and I've got to agree, he is pretty freakin' pathetic.

My goodness, what a loser! I'd like the think the guy is making fun of himself, but sadly, I am pretty sure he is 100% genuine. Pretty humorous to watch though.

A long time ago, I was at a store and witnessed two 30 some year olds guys anxiously asking one of the employes if there were any more Hotwheels cars in the back because some new models had just been released that day or something along those lines. This older woman (in her 50s I'd guess) who had also overhead their request waited until they were out of earshot, then turned to me, shaking her head and said, "I once dated a guy who collected Hotwheels cars. It was pretty weird. Trust me, grown men who collect toys are not a turn on." I certainly didn't need her tell me that, but this poor youtube guy does.

She'd probably sing a different tune if she saw what some of the rare ones go for! ;)

CBS were to broadcast ANH with an extra 22 minutes of added footage in 1984?!
Time

Actually, CBS snipped one tiny little thing. Vader's gesturing at Tarkin as if he was speaking, right before Tarkin's line "Terminate her! Immediately!"

That could be considered the first fan edit. ;)

Sadly, no Biggs or Jabba scenes added back in. The footage of a family whose devotion to SW merchandise had taken over their entire house was unique to the broadcast, IIRC. The rest were the celebrity "testimonials" (mostly people with shows on CBS at the time) and bits from the documentaries. Commercials made up the rest of the three hour timeslot.

In spite of the hype, SW had been shown so many times on Cable and pay per view at this point, it was beaten in the ratings by the trashy miniseries "Lace". I still watched the whole thing though.

Star Wars on Blu in 2011?

Lucas specifically writes in the liner notes only that he has "restored" the movie, which might be a new level of 1984 newspeak even for him. (It's a much more thoughtful and subtle re-working than Star Wars got, but it sort of fumbles near the end zone with the cgi monkees replacing the midgets.)

In the documentary, he talks about filming in real 1970 locations as a CGI cityscape is shown. That can't just be accidental. He's gone 1984 all the way. ;)

IIRC, the theatrical director's cut, (released in the wake of Star Wars' success) simply reinstates the cuts Warner imposed on the film when it first came out.

Whether or not you like the new version with CGI, it's a disturbing trend from Lucas not to even talk about the changes, let alone have added credits for the people that worked on the new shots. People may not even realize anything has been altered years from now.
